1 Installing the 32-bit Intel compiler on PCs running 32-bit Windows

1.1 Prerequisites Before you can install this version of the compiler, you must have installed either Microsoft Visual C++ .NET 2002 or 2003, Standard edition or above, or Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2002 or 2003, any edition with the Visual C++ component installed. At present we only have experience with the second of these options. We purchased Microsoft Visual Studio .NET 2003 software. In that case, you need to carry out Steps 1 and 2 (Visual Studio .NET) of the four steps indicated when you insert the installation CD. During step 1, we were told that some components necessary for webbased installs were missing from our PC. We said to skip that step and continue. These are not needed for GEMPACK. During Step 2, accept the default list of selected items to install. Note that Step 2 takes many [25+] minutes. Installation of Product Documentation (Step 3) is not necessary for GEMPACK. You may wish to carry out Step 4 (Service Releases) if you are connected to the internet (but this is not essential for GEMPACK). Possible Problem When installing Visual Studio .NET you may get the erroneous message Setup has detected that another program requires the computer to reboot If so, we suggest that you proceed as follows. Cancel the current installation. Insert the Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites CD into your CD drive. Click *Start*, click *Run*, type drive:\setup.exe, and then click *OK*. In this step, drive is the letter of your CD drive. Click *No* when you receive the following message: Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites Warning - Setup on CD1 should be used to launch Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET Prerequisites setup so that only the necessary components are installed. Click Yes to exit and change CDs. Click No to install all available components. After the installation of the Prerequisites components is complete, insert Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET CD 1, and then install Visual Studio 2005 or Visual Studio .NET.

1.2 Installing the Compiler You will need to run the install EXE file you obtained from Intel. 1 You will need the Intel Fortran licence file you obtained from Intel. On one screen you will be asked to Enter the Serial Number. We suggest that you click on the "more Options" button and then browse to point to your Intel Fortran licence file (as supplied by Intel). You need to carry out two separate installs from the list of possible installs you see when you run the install EXE. 1. Install Visual Fortran compiler for 32-bit applications. 2 If a Dialog box says Microsoft Platform SDK not found, you can tell the installer to continue installing and point to the place where the Microsoft Platform SDK is installed (which is probably in c:\Program Files\Microsoft\Microsoft Platform SDK). We strongly suggest that you ask the installer to automatically update Environment variables. 2. You also need to install the Intel Visual Compiler Integrations in Microsoft Visual Studio. 1.3 Making Shortcut to Build Environment for IA-32 Applications Although you will not need this shortcut when installing or using GEMPACK in the standard way, you may need this shortcut if you are using the Intel compiler for non-GEMPACK work. To make a shortcut to "Build Environment for IA-32 applications", go to the Intel group of programs in Start menu. Use Start..Programs..Intel Software Development Tools..Intel Fortran Compiler 9.0 Build Environment for IA-32 applications Right click on the latter and select "Create shortcut". Then drag shortcut onto the desktop. This completes the installation. You can go on to testing the installation.

2 Installing the Intel compiler on PCs running 64-bit Windows

2.1 Prerequisites Before you can install this version of the Intel compiler, you must install or have installed Microsoft Platform SDK (Build 1289 or later). We downloaded what is called the "Windows(R) Server 2003 SP1 Platform SDK ISO Install" from the Microsoft web site. This came as a large .IMG (Image) file. In order to install from this .IMG file, you need to burn an install CD from the .IMG file. We used Roxio CD burner (Creator Classic) and selected File..Record disk from image. This produces like SETUP.EXE etc on the CD produced. You can run SETUP.EXE to install Microsoft Platform SDK. To install, run SETUP.EXE and select "typical installation". 2.2 Installing the Compiler You will need to run the install EXE file you obtained from Intel. 3 You will need the Intel Fortran licence file you obtained from Intel. On one screen you will be asked to Enter the Serial Number. We suggest that you click on the "more Options" button and then browse to point to your Intel Fortran licence file (as supplied by Intel). You only need to choose option Intel Visual Fortran compiler Extended Memory 64 Technology edition (ie, for EM64T Intel processor or the AMD Athlon 64-bit processor)

We used the file W_FC_P_9.0.018.EXE which installed version 9.0.018 of the compiler. Depending on which version of the install EXE you obtain, this option may also mention "Itanium-based applications". If so, that is fine. 3 We used the file W_FC_P_9.0.018.EXE which installed version 9.0.018 of the compiler.

to install. [The other options are not needed for GEMPACK.] You should select "complete install". If the Installer said it can not find Microsoft Platform SDK, point it to the directory where you installed the Microsoft Platform SDK (see section 2.1 above). Then click on Continue installing and use the Microsoft Platform SDK below. We strongly suggest that you ask the installer to automatically update Environment variables. 2.3 Making Shortcut to Build Environment for EM64T-based Applications Although you will not need this shortcut when installing or using GEMPACK in the standard way, you may need it if you are using the Intel compiler for non-GEMPACK work. To make a shortcut to "Build Environment for EM64T-based applications", go to the Intel group of programs in Start menu. Use Start..Programs..Intel Software Development Tools..Intel Fortran Compiler 9.0 Build Environment for EM64T-based applications Right click on the latter and select "Create shortcut". Then drag shortcut onto the desktop. This completes the installation. You can go on to testing the installation.
