Hardware configuration
Alcatel 9135 MFS: Equipment View (2)
The MFS is composed of :
Up to 12 GPU (GPRS Packet Unit) per subrack (11 + 1).
One GPU corresponds to one BSC. (Multi GPU per BSS in B7)
The subrack is also composed of Converters (DC/DC), synchronisation
(over Ater) and Ethernet connections.
Two Servers (*), which insure the configuration of
the MFS and a remote connection (O&M).
nternal Hubs, used for Ethernet connections.
t is not mandatory that the MFS
is fully equipped in GPUs.

Exercise
How many BSSs can you connect to one MFS ?
Does only packet switched traffic go through the MFS ?
Which equipment implements the PCU functions?
Do the A-ter and Gb interfaces carry the same type of traffic?
n the MFS, which board is associated with one BSC?

Exercise
For the MFS, which Operation and Maintenance Center do
you need ?
What are the most important functions for
OMC-R ?
Can the BSS perform on-line hardware extension? What
does this mean ?
For a Medium-Host, how many cells are possible ?

Purpose of General Packet Radio Service:
The GPRS allows the service subscriber to send and receive data in an
end to end packet transfer mode, without utilizing network resources in
circuit-switched mode
t allows a charging based on data volume (resources really used)
t also benefits the network operator who may then use scarce radio
resources more efficiently by sharing these resources
GPRS provides packet mode transfer of data for applications that exhibit
one or more of the following characteristics:
ntermittent, non periodic (i.e. bursty) data transmission
frequent transmission of small volumes of data
infrequent transmission of larger volumes of data

Alcatel's Solution principles
Smooth and cost effective introduction of GPRS in the BSS by minimizing
the hardware modification needed to the already installed network
elements
Only software upgrade is needed on the installed BTS, BSC and OMC-R
GPRS functions are introduced in one network element called Alcatel
9135 MFS (Multi-BSS Fast packet Server), one central entity which
controls several BSS and supports the GPRS specific functions:
Packet Control Unit (PCU) function
Standard Gb nterface protocol stack
Maximum usage of the existing transmission resources
