FOREIGN LANGUAGE TRAINING FOR ACTIVE DUTY MARINES The Rosetta Stone contract that was available to Active Duty on MarineNet expires on 19 July 2011 and is not being renewed. Now Marines will have access to the Defense Language Institute http://www.dliflc.edu/index.html DLI - Headstart2 and Rapport are currently linked via the portal on the right side of the MarineNet home page. Rapport offers cultural orientation and basic language training for Afghanistan - Pashto and Dari, and Iraqi-Arabic. Headstart2 currently offers an operationally focused introduction to 750 key words and phrases in Pashto, Dari, Urdu, Iraqi, Chinese (Mandarin), Portuguese, French, German, Korean, Farsi, Russian, Spanish and Uzbek. Other languages are being developed. Marines and their families, and those eligible for MCCS library privileges can also take Mango Foreign Language. TEACHING AS A SECOND CAREER On June 14, 2011 at 1130-1300, "Teaching as a Second Career" presentations will be conducted at The Hub, Bldg. 5305, Classroom 6 at MCAS Miramar. A light lunch will be provided. Active duty and Reserve, Retired military and military spouses who have an interest in becoming a public school teacher anytime in the future are encouraged to attend. These presentations will include information on the following: - Troops to Teachers - MCAS Miramar Services and Programs - How to qualify for a teaching credential? - Where are the job opportunities? - Understanding the education career field Elementary grades, Middle grades, Secondary (high school) grades, JROTC and Career Technical programs and Special Education. This is a great chance to find out if public school teaching is a second career choice for you after you complete your obligated service. The presentations are being coordinated by the MCAS Miramar-Career Resource Center, Mountain Pacific Troops to Teachers, and local Teacher Preparation programs in San Diego County. BLUE STAR MUSEUMS OFFER FREE ENTRY FOR ACTIVE DUTY AND FAMILY MEMBERS Blue Star Museums is a partnership among Blue Star Families, the National Endowment for the Arts, and more than 1,000 museums across America. See the following website for a map for Blue Star Museums that will be participating this summer in each state: http://www.arts.gov/national/bluestarmuseums/index2011.php ASYMCA PRESENTS LEADERS IN TRAINING FOR TEENS The Youth and Community Outreach Department will premier the first Leadership in Training (LIT) program specifically for military children this summer in July! It is tough being a kids these days especially a teenage-particular when dealing with the stress of belonging to a military family. One week in July military teens ages 15 to 17 with an Active Duty sponsor E-9 or below will have the opportunity to participate in the LIT program to learn about leadership skills and job readiness. The program consists of three components: Training Modules - Teens will participate in a interactive training block to prepare them for future employment opportunities within the workforce. Modules include, but are not limited to: Child Abuse Prevention, Professionalism, Interview Skills, Team Building, Risk Management and leadership. Teens will engage in group work, role play, and ice breakers to apply new skills and strategies. Professional Outings - Training modules are supplemented with field trips to local San Diego businesses for hands on work experience and knowledge on a variety of potential careers. Military teens will be able to engage in the day to day job responsibilities while also learning about the necessary skills, education, and requirements needed to fulfill the position. CPR/First Aid Training - All LIT participants will become CPR/ First Aid certified during the session. **Registration is open from June 23-June 30. Register online at www.militaryymca.org. They are seeking any Marines or Sailors that would like to volunteer their time to help the community of Poway, and PGSL to keep the tournament running smoothly throughout the weekend. There are many tasks, such as parking lot security, field preparation, park clean up, working in the snack shack, manning the BBQ grill etc. that we can use help with.
