2011 FALL SEMESTER ADMISSIONS GUIDE FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS (GRADUATE COURSE)

1. Eligibility
A. Master's Programs and Combined Graduate + Doctoral Programs
International applicants must meet all of the following requirements: 1) He or she holds (or is about to hold) a Bachelors degree; 2) He or she is not a citizen of Korea; 3) His or her parents are not citizens of Korea Applicants of Korean origin must meet all of the following requirements: 1) He or she received entire elementary, junior high, high school, and undergraduate education outside of Korea at the comparable and equivalent level of those provided in Korea; 2) He or she holds (or is about to hold) a Bachelors degree

B. Doctoral Programs

International applicants must meet all of the following requirements:

1) He or she holds (or is about to hold) a Masters degree; 2) He or she is not a citizen of Korea; 3) His or her parents are not citizens of Korea

Applicants of Korean origin must meet all of the following requirements:

1) He or she received entire elementary, middle school, high school, and undergraduate education outside of Korea at the comparable and equivalent level of those provided in Korea; 2) He or she holds (or is about to hold) a Masters degree.

C. Eligibility for language proficiency (Masters Programs, Doctoral Programs, Masters and Combined Graduate+Doctoral Programs)
- Applicants must provide one of the following: 1) Korean proficiency: A TOPIK certificate for level 3 or higher, or certificate of completion for level 3 or higher at a Korean Language Institute of universities. 2) English proficiency: A score report from a recognized English proficiency test (TOEFL - PBT 550, CBT 210, iBT 80, IELTS 5.5, TEPS 551 or higher)

Non-scholarship applicants who apply for following departments must submit required score report 1) Department of Economics and Trade, International Culture Studies (Graduate School of International
Studies): TOPIK certificate for level 3 or higher 2) Department of Public Administration and Department of History: TOPIK certificate for level 4 or higher 3) Department of Mass Communication (Masters course applicants): TOPIK certificate for level 4 or higher 4) Department of Philosophy: TOPIK certificate for laver 4 or higher. 5) Department of Sociology: TOPIK certificate for laver 4 or higher.

International student admissions are based on a departmental limit.

6. Procedure
1) Application - Non-scholarship applicants: Complete application documents pay application fee submit documents the Office of International Affairs - KNU Honors Scholarships (KHS) Applicants: Consult academic advisor for KHS scholarship submit application forms and documents to academic advisor pay application fee academic advisor sends application documents to Office of International Affairs along with recommendation letter and financial support letter

2) Admission Examination of documents by Office of International Affairs, KNU main Campus Scholastic Achievement Test by departments - Based on review of application documents and interview (*KHS applicants do not complete this step) Screening by University Admissions Committee and Graduate School Committee

7. Required Documents All required documents should be submitted along with one copy
Masters / Combined Masters & Doctoral Program Doctoral Program

Completed application form (download from Office of International Affairs website) Statement of Purpose and study plan (KNU format, in English or Korean) Letters of recommendation from professors of universities attended previously (KNU format) Letters of recommendation must be sealed with the recommender's signature on the envelope.

KHS applicants from countries included on the proficiency list (see next page) must submit their score report of an English proficiency test or Korean proficiency test. Non-scholarship applicants are asked to submit these scores or certificate of enrollment at Korean Language Institute if possible. Copy of applicant's alien registration card, front and back (if applicable) Copy of applicant's passport (face page) Full birth certificate or Family Census Register Non-scholarship applicants should submit their birth certificate after passing the departmental Scholastic Achievement Test. Original copy of bank statement (in English) or certificate stipulating that applicant will receive a scholarship from an institution other than KNU. - Non-scholarship applicants: submit bank statement showing more than USD10,000 after passing departmental Scholastic Achievement Test. - KHS applicants: submit bank statement showing more than USD4,000 with application documents. No bank statement is required if academic advisor for KHS applicant submits a Certificate of Financial Support. Employment certificate and certificate of income from financial guarantor. - Non-scholarship applicants: Submit documents after passing departmental Scholastic Achievement Test. No bank statement is required if academic advisor for KHS applicant submits a Certificate of Financial Support.

* Be sure to send fee using the applicants name in Korean or English. 9. Scholarships and Benefits KNU Honors Scholarships

- Qualifications: Applicants with recommendations from their academic advisors and Dean of their department. Applicants should meet one of the conditions listed below: Students with the following English or Korean Proficiency test scores or above
English TOEFL(IBT) 85 TOEIC 830 TEPS 600 IELTS 6.0 Korean TOPIK

level 5

To promote an wider international distribution of scholarships, all applicants except for applicants from countries on the proficiency list1 are not required to submit these scores.
Proficiency list: Bangladesh, Vietnam, India, China, Pakistan

- Benefits: 100% or 50% of tuition fees, health insurance, monthly stipend from academic advisor (consult your academic advisor to see if you can be paid or not) - Support Period: Masters & Doctoral programs: Two (2) years Combined Masters & Doctoral program: Four (4) years * Scholarships will be reviewed after every semester and continuation of a scholarship into another semester is not guaranteed. To continue receiving a scholarship, the recipient should be recommended by their academic advisor, complete at least 6 credits of Korean Language Classes over two semesters and maintain a minimum average grade of B.

10. Important notes for Applicants


1) All documents should be in Korean or English. Documents in another language should be

accompanied by a notarized Korean or English translation.


2) If any required documents are found to be false or counterfeit, your admission status will be

canceled.
3) Any applicant submitting a certificate of expected graduation must submit the original copy

of the graduation certificate before beginning their first semester at KNU. 4) Office of International Affairs is not responsibility for cancellation due to incorrect contact information(address and phone number) 5) If an applicants visa is not issued or rejected, admission will be canceled. 6) Applicants receiving a scholarship from another institution are not required to submit a certificate of financial guarantee; however, you must submit a certificate/letter of confirmation from the institution that will pay your tuition during your period of study at KNU. 7) No submitted documents or application fees will be returned to the applicant. (Original copies of certificates of graduation will be returned after the screening process is completed.)

8) To avoid a system overloaded on the last day of the application period, please complete
your application in advance. 9) Successful Chinese applicants should submit confirmation from the China Academic Degree & Graduate Education Development Center or Education Office of the Embassy of the Peoples Republic of China in Korea before the semester begins (Aug.31. 2011). Refer to website http://www.cdgdc.edu.cn or http://eoe.or.kr .(not applicable for Korean degree holders)
