Kindergarten Musical Goals for this Lesson: To be able to match pitch. To begin to develop an understanding of rhythms.

Understanding Facets to be addressed in this lesson: critical thinking, awareness of environment, selfknowledge Musical Concepts to be addressed in this lesson: repetition, memorization, motion, rhythm, dynamics Social Concepts to be addressed in this lesson: turn taking, following directions, critical thinking, leadership, awareness of space Literacy Skills: There was an Old Lady who Swallowed Some Leaves! by Lucille Colandro (1) Time Estimation: (1 min) Introduction: Jambo Sing song a total of three times with the class changing the pitch each time. Assessment: Were students able to match pitch every time the song was sung? Transition: Sing Bee, Bee Bumblebee (2) Time Estimation: (4 min) Bee, Bee Bumblebee Assessment: Were students able to sing individually? If so, did they sing correct intervals/pitches? Transition: Sing Will you please stand up? while I get the guitar. (3) Time Estimation: ( 3 min) Clap, Clap, Clap your Hands Assessment: Were students able to follow directions of the song and sing at the same time? Transition: Sing Will you please sit down? and go immediately in to interval singing. (4) Time Estimation: ( 1-2 min) Interval Singing Sing series of intervals, slowly, focusing on Sol, Mi, and maybe Do while using hand signals. Assessment: Were students able to accurately match pitch and hand motions? Transition: Clap and sing four quarter notes.

(5) Time Estimation: (1-2 min) Rhythm Exercise Clap out series of quarter and eight note rhythms. May include rests. Assessment: Were students able to correctly execute rhythms that were dictated? Were they able to keep a steady beat while doing so? Transition: Get the guitar and begin to sing I've Been Working on the Railroad (6) Time Estimation: ( 2 min) I've Been Working on the Railroad Assessment: Are students using their singing voices to sing the song? Transition: Begin singing Bow Wow Wow and do motions while seated (7) Time Estimation: (2 min) Bow Wow Wow Sing song a total of two times while doing motions. Ask students, Do you think you remember this song? Go over words before asking them to stand up and sing the song while standing. Add hop at the end of the song if class is ready. Assessment: Were students able to memorize and sing song correctly? Were they able to apply motions to the song and sing at the same time? Transition: Start singing Miss Sue (8) Time Estimation: (2 min) Miss Sue Assessment: Are students able to remember this song? Are they able to use their singing voices? Transition: Ask students to sit down and begin to sing Are you Sleeping? (9) Time Estimation: (5 min) Are You Sleeping? Sing song by myself a total of three times. Break song up into phrases and have students be the echo part of the song. Let students know that they are they echo and explain that an echo is simply a repetition. Who is this song about? What are we asking Brother John? What sound do the bells make in the song? Sing song again after small discussion. Assessment: Were students able to sing in tune? Were they able to correctly echo the song back? Transition: Ask students to stand up and hold the hand of the person next to them. Take a step in and let go of hands. (10) Time Estimation: (5 min) Shoo Turkey Shoo Assessment: Were students able to remember how the game went? Were they singing their part in tune?

Transition: I will ask students to sit down and spread out on the rug and begin to chant Jack be Nimble (11) Time Estimation: (7 min) Jack be Nimble Student will go through song with out any instruments the first time. Then I will hand out instruments to students. Who remembers what their whisper voice sounds like? How should we play our instruments if we are using our whisper voice? (Soft) How can we do that? (Hitting it or shaking it softly) As we go through the different volume levels, I will tell them that the musical term is piano or forte. We will go through this song various times trying it at different volume levels. Assessment: Were students able to follow dynamics as they were instructed? Were they able to keep a steady beat? Transition: I will call students to hand me instruments and ask them to sit back on the rug. Once I sit on the chair, I will ask them to face me. (12) Time Estimation: (5 min) There was an Old Lady who Swallowed Some Leaves I will sing story to them, asking questions along the way. What do you think will happen next? Why do you think she swallowed [insert item here]? When do you think this story takes place? What is a sneezing noise? Transition: I will ask individual students to move to form a circle. (13) Time Estimation: (5 min) Charlie Over the Ocean Play the game. I will be the first person to participate to refresh their memory. Assessment: Were students able to sing alone?
