Construction of Single Phase Transformer

A single phase transformer consist of primary and secondary windings put on a magnetic core. Magnetic core is used to confine flux to definite path. The core made up of thin sheets (i.e. also known as lamination )and high grade silicon steel. The lamination reduces eddy-current loss and silicon steel reduces hysteresis loss. The lamination are insulated from one another by heat resistant enamel insulated coating. L-type and E-type laminations are used. The lamination are built up into stack and the joints are staggerd to mininmize airgaps. There are two types of basic transformer construction. y Core type construction y Shell type 1. Core type In a core type transformer, the magnetic circuit consist of two vertical limbs with two horizontal section known as yokes. To keep the leakage flux to minimum, half of each winding is placed on each leg of the core. The low voltage winding is placed next to the core and the high voltage winding is placed around the low voltage winding to reduce the insulating material required.
