Like hundreds of others in the past, this writer walked the halls of Gate of Heaven School, sat at the desks listening to the teachers and played in the asphalt playground before graduating. But this year, for the 15 young men and women of the 2011 graduating class, the occasion was bittersweet. Although the students were about to embark on a new journey in their lives, the ceremony also signified the closing of the school. During the traditional Catholic ceremony held in the schools church, Reverend James Paisleys homily exemplified the well-rounded education these students have received. He recalled the eighth-grade class production of The Wizard of Oz and the advice the Wizard had given Dorothy and her friends. Dallas graduates remember old, look toward new

Marking the end of an era, 205 graduating seniors walked across the stage to accept their diplomas during the final graduation ceremony of the old Dallas High School on Friday evening. Earmarking the significance, alumni from the first graduating class, the Class of 1962, led the Class of 2011 onto the football field and played a role in the festivities. This commencement does

not mark the end but a new beginning, said Samantha Casto, president of the Class of 2011, during the June 3 graduation ceremony. As the wind rippled through the light and dark blue graduation robes, Casto looked out among her classmates and those in the bleachers, viewing both the old high school and the newly-built one. Her comments reflected the classs future but also the fact that, this July, the old high school will be torn down. She told classmates not to be afraid of failure.

Failure is a detour on the way to success, Casto said. Just like the leaking ceiling which rerouted us to class, and hall monitors who made us question our direction. Her parting advice to her classmates was simple: Listen to all sides of a situation and determine for yourself the outcome. Superintendent Frank Galicki told members of the graduating class, Transformation is always challenging, adding that Dallas School District has always been a top performing school and has never been con-

tent with maintaining the status quo but continues pushing for the next higher level. Learning comes in many ways, he told students. It comes through work, relationships, sports and hobbies. You have tasted your first big success, he said. There are more to come. Salutatorian Pierce Donavan said the Class of 2011 was a record breaker. We scored 25 percent higher in math, he said. We are ending a 50-year era with a bang. Donavan noted that the

Class of 2011 will have students studying on both coasts to achieve goals such as becoming teachers, astronauts and writers. Stating she was all choked up to leave the Dallas Bubble behind, valedictorian Meghan Anne Gallis said classmates have laughed and cried together but are ready to close this chapter and begin a new one. Together, Christopher Clemson, class vice president, and Beverly Brown Atherholt, an alumni from 1962, shared the podium to bid farewell to the Class of 2011.

This is not a farewell to Dallas, Clemson said. Dallas will always be here. He stated home is where you grow up wanting to leave, but grow old wanting to return. Atherholt stated that, after

Cool Ride band to cruise Atlantic Ocean aboard ship

Lloyd Smith, of Nanticoke, strikes the first few soulfully funky notes of The Commodores Brick House and throughout the rest of the beat-busting tune, it never dawns on the listener that Smith could ever be a 43year-old truck driver by trade. The Cool Ride Band member was born to sing and play the ax (and the sax) like local Olympian Jim Thorpe was, as Bruce Springsteen would say, Born to Run. The local cover band frequents car shows and bike weeks throughout the Back Mountain and Wilkes-Barre areas, and now the rockin quartet will cruise the Atlantic Ocean. Guitarist and saxophonist Smith, lead guitarist and vocalist Billy Fitt, drummer Darren Hall and his twin brother and bass player Doug Hall, will perform on a five-night Royal Caribbean cruise to Bermuda from June 18

through June 23. Darren Hall, of Orange, said the trip is a milestone for the band that recently celebrated its 5-year anniversary. Its definitely an accomplishment, he said. Its a feather in our cap. The band, which members call NEPAs Ultimate Party Band, is comprised of musicians who have all played instruments for 30 years or longer. Its no surprise the band could perform for a 3,300-guest cruise ship and not be nervous. The Cool Ride Band takes listeners on a musical journey through several different genres when it performs anything from classic disco chart-toppers like the 1975

K.C. & the Sunshine Band hit Get Down Tonight to current tracks of today such as Finger Elevens Paralyzer. And thats just one beat of the almost symphonic performance the band provides for its fans. Visual ploys play a big part of the bands ability to get the crowd roaring with enthusiasm, and band memners take that job seriously. But ZZ Top-style beards, afro wigs and flashy sunglasses are just the beginning band members even hold up signs with phrases like make some noise during shows, which Darren says throws partiers for a loop. rine and everyones cheering and (the person) onstage gets a kick out of it, said Darren. The interactive band even invites its fans on stage to help in performances, providing instruments like tambourines to willing participants. Band members also use wireless technology so they can play with the crowd while playing their instruments. We like to get people involved, said Darren. The band plays mostly private events and club gigs, and also

hosts an annual event in the Back Mountain at Konefals Grove in Jackson Township at the end of the summer. The Cool Ride Summer Party combines two aspects of what has made the band click for five years classic cars and classic rock. The first time we did it, we set up a price, just to see if it would work, said Darren. No (newspaper) articles announced it. We had more than 500 people show up.

And that loyal fanbase keeps coming back. For the cruise, Darren said band members had the option of staying on the ship for free in exchange for their performance or working out a discounted rate for a group of fans to come onboard. They chose the latter, opting to open the transatlantic trip to all Cool Ride lovers. It will be a family affair, too, as Darrens recently-married son will celebrate his honeymoon on the five-day cruise.

ack Mountain Memorial ibrary Auction 2011 officially kicked off June 6 with the annual Auction Kick-Off Dinner at Newberry Estates. Cocktails and hors doeuvres were followed by a buffet-style dinner including a grilling station, a pasta station and a dessert station. A mini auction offered those in attendance a chance to bid on a sampling of Nearly Olde and New Goods items, antique collectibles and plants.

Officials are putting the final touches on the townships firstever comprehensive plan, which will help officials determine what the future will hold for the smallest township in Luzerne County. The drafted comprehensive plan, which includes input from residents, reflects how officials can identify opportunities for growth and how to control community development within the township. This is just the start of some major changes within the township after the approval of the comprehensive plan, officials will begin to make significant updates to the townships zoning ordinance and subdivision and land development ordinance (SALDO), which have been in place since around 1995. Franklin Township Secretary/Treasurer Rick Melvin said the township received a $100,000 grant in 2009 from the Luzerne County Office of Community Development, which will fund the comprehensive plan and the ordinance updates. Initially, officials didnt have the intention to develop a comprehensive plan Melvin said the supervisors were unable to utilize the funds to fix and maintain roads within the township because the areas that needed work did not meet the grants guidelines. At first it was really unfamiliar to me, a comprehensive plan, said Chairman Ted Dymond. Its to see which direc-

tion is good for the township in the future. A farmer by trade, Dymond said he would like to see the township remain a rural community. Two major farming operations, Dymonds Farm and Braces Orchard, are currently located within the township, as is a honey bee farm owned by William and Priscilla Perry. The plan states agriculture is still an important aspect of the townships local economy, and keeping open spaces is key to maintaining the activity. While neighboring Back Mountain municipalities have experienced growth due to migration from more urban communities such as Wilkes-Barre and Kingston, Dymond said Franklin Township has yet to see significant population increases. But officials estimate that time will come. Kingston Township is pushing toward us, Dallas Township is pushing toward us, said Supervisor Michael Prokopchak, also a farmer. Melvin added the idea is to control that expected growth coming from neighboring municipalities, including controlling how much land residents would need to build on a property. Prokopchak said while Dallas and Kingston townships have public water and sewage systems, Franklin Township re-

quires all residents to have their own septic and well water systems. To address the spacing issue for new homes, a precedent needs to be set as to how much land a builder would need to maintain these independent systems. Instead of two acres, a resident would need 2 acres to accommodate a failed (septic or water) system, said Prokopchak. According to the plan, residential properties make up about 12 percent of the townships land use, most of which is scattered along the townships main roads. Open space and woodlands account for about 46 percent, and agriculture utilizes about 36 percent of the townships land space. Dymond said the plan reflects what residents feel are the most important aspects of the community road maintenance and police and emergency services. Melvin said road work makes up about two-thirds of the townships priorities, which is why the supervisors initially wanted to utilize the grant money for road maintenance. The township is patrolled by state police from its barracks in Wyoming and satellite operations in Laporte, Shickshinny, Towanda and Tunkhannock. Franklin Township has two volSee PLAN, Page 9

Supervisors approved a motion to research the pros and cons of participating in a regional Back Mountain police force while a dirt bike course rattled the nerves of many residents. Already a member of the Back Mountain Regional Emergency Management Agency, the township agreed Monday to a feasibility study by the Governors Center for Local Government Services for a

Another resident said there was a cloud of dust rising from the property and resident Rich Mulhern said there were eight bikes going at one time. Wilkes said supervisors are aware of the situation and have had attorney Jeffery Malak and code enforcement officer Andy Shol-

In order to be eligible for the program, an individual must be at least 60 years of age or turn 60 before the end of 2011. Proof of age, income and county residence are required. Income guidelines per household include $20,147 for a household of one, $27,214 for a household of two and $34,281 for a household of three. Eligible participants will receive four $5 vouchers which can be redeemed at participating farm markets and stands.

The vouchers can be used to purchase fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs. Processed foods, baked goods, nuts, cider, honey, jam and certain citrus and tropical fruits are not included in the program. Natural gas companies must now get zoning approval

Natural gas companies looking to construct pipelines within the township are now required to receive zoning approval for projects, officials said at a meeting Tuesday night. Two natural gas companies, Chief Gathering LLC and Williams Field Services LLC, have submitted plans to build gathering lines within the township to tap into the Williams-owned Transco interstate pipeline, which runs perpendicular to Hil-

debrant Road near the Dallas School District campus. Solicitor Thomas Brennan said an Act 14 notification was received by the township on May19 on behalf of Chief for its application for a state Department of Environmental Protection permit related to its approximately 30mile Wyoming Natural Gas Pipeline. Act 14 notifications are required by the state for companies looking to apply for certain permits related to projects within municipalities and counties. The notification allows local governments 30 days to provide com-

Partnership members from Dallas Borough and Dallas, Franklin, Jackson, Kingston and Lehman townships agreed to discuss the idea with their individual boards before agreeing to participate in the study. As of Wednesday, Jackson Township approved its participation in the study, but Kingston Township will not. After a brief discussion and hearing Police Chief James Balavages opinion on the matter, board members failed to make a second motion on the issue. Balavage said a similar study from about 17 years ago didnt provide results in favor of a regionalization, and said only if a current study was serious would he consider taking part. Unless there is a concerted effort to understand policing in the future, I would say no, he said. The board also discussed an issue pertaining to the Sleepy Hollow development owned by Dr. Joseph Lombardo. Board member Frank Natitus said attendees often park on both sides of narrow streets, including Manor Drive, Terrace Avenue and Dug Road, which prohibits normal traffic flow as well as emergency vehicle passage. Supervisor James Reino Jr. said fiscal difficulties in providing adequate police force for the event is another issue the township is trying to resolve. Even though we have the largest police force in the Back Mountain with the costs involved, we just dont have the

Approved an additional $3,500 to the already expended $13,600 for the Terrace Avenue pipe project at the request of Borton-Lawson engineers.

An issue of designating emergency response coverage for Sorber Mountain Road was determined while township supervisors also awarded a road construction bid and appointed a new code enforcement officer on Wednesday night. Reading groups offered at library

In addition to the regular summer reading program at the Back Mountain Memorial Library, several reading and book discussion groups will be offered. The groups will span children completing kindergarten through teens completing high school and will include books on the summer reading theme, One World, Many Stories. Early Readers Story Hour with Donna Schuler, a pre-school teacher, will be held from 11:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, June 23 to August 11. There will be seven sessions. Children who have just completed kindergarten and first grade are invited to join these advanced story hour sessions. Everybody Loves a Good Story! will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. on Monday, June 20 and 27, with Maria Sorokin, 7-year story hour volunteer. There will be two sessions. Children who have just completed second grade through fifth grade are invited to enjoy unusual folktales from Japan and Poland! Donuts & Discussion will be conducted by Janet Bauman, Childrens Librarian. Tweens who are nine, 10 and 11 years of ` age are invited to come to one or all of these book discussion sessions. Gorski also helped his own cause at the plate, going 2-2 with a double and two RBIs. Nick Kocher and Jorden Finch chipped in with two hits and Matt Dillon smashed a double for the Astros. Eighth-grade English teacher Diane Ruch also shared her sentiments about the last graduating class. They hold a special place in my heart, she said of the students. I expect them to do very well in whatever they pursue. After speeches were delivered, tears were shed and memories were revisited, it was evident that the final graduating class of Gate of Heaven was prepared for the future that lies ahead of it. The faculty and staff had become family and nurtured the graduates as such. It was time for these young men and women to take the education and love they received and share their knowledge with the world.
