The UTL group came into existence to cater to the growing demand for telecom related equipment about Four decades ago. In 1961, we have set up an ancillary unit for supplying spares for Strowger Telephone Exchanges to ITI Ltd when India had less than 1 million Telephone lines and ITI Ltd was struggling with limited resources for maintaining the Cross Bar Exchanges that serviced Telephone Exchanges all over the country, thereby setting the trend for Indian Telecom Revolution.

We had been closely associated with Mr. Sam Pitroda in the telecom revolution. During 1989-91, UTL acquired the indigenous technology for manufacture of C-DOT Telecom Exchanges and eventually became the lead manufacturer in India and went on to supply more than 4000 exchanges that connected more than 76,000 villages or 22% of Indias landline Telephone connections. These exchanges brought down the per line price of telephone connections to one tenth of what multinationals were charging. In 1991, UTL acquired the Telecom Division of ABB, a leading multinational company and has successfully grown its business multifold. UTL Contributed: Every Every Every Every 4th telephone exchange in the country, 3rd village network, 3rd microwave radio and 4th telephone instrument.

The Dense Wave Division Multiplexer (DWDM) can connect cities through a fiber Optic Cable and carry up to 1 Million active Voice & IP Data (including Video) connections (wireless / wire line) at a speed of 79 Gigabits / second. DWDM has the ability to transport on one fiber 32 Channels of 2.5 Gigabits / second of data. UTL will launch the next generation of DWDM System which supports 40 Channels of 10 Gigabits/second of data speed. The system has multiple equipment series including Optical Terminals (OTM), Wavelength Line Amplifiers (WLA) and Optical Add Drop Multiplexers (OADM) to support various types of transport applications. UTL DWDM-3240 Element Management System (EMS) is a powerful, state of art, user friendly and provides management function for UTL DWDM-3240 product family. The UTL DWDM-3240 Management solution allows remote system operation and service provisioning from any node on the network.

Goa Broadband Network: We would like to make a special mention of our one-of-a-kind and state-of-art network (fiber optic) infrastructure that we built for the state of Goa. It is the first and most innovative Fiber to the home (FTTH) network in the country. Goa Broad Band Network is an IP Based High-bandwidth broadband network which provides network connectivity and services to the all Government offices, institutions, Citizens and businesses throughout the State of Goa. GBBN connects Panaji, the Capital of Goa (State Head Quarters - SHQ) to Madgaon, a District Head Quarters (DHQ) of South Goa with 10Gbps of OFC Link. Six Taluka Head Quarters (THQs) of North Goa and five Taluka Head Quarters of South Goa are further connected with their Respective SHQ and DHQ with the same bandwidth of 10GB. All 189 Village Panchayats and 225 Office POP locations are connected with their respective Taluka Head Quarters with 1Gbps of Fiber Connectivity. GBBN Network is to provide AVVID Structure (Architecture of Voice, Video and Integrated Data) not only to Government premises but also to all the businesses and citizens to grow Information and Technology. Some of the applications are IPTV- all TV channels with Time-Shift feature, Viedo_on_Demand, Tele Medicine, Distance Learning, online gaming and Internet services to residential customers.

This project stands testimony to our technical vision, expertise and project execution capabilities. This infrastructure asset provides endless opportunities for the company to provide one-stop solution for all digital needs in the future. Goa Broadband Project Inaugurated By Honorable PM in Dec 2007

So far no one built such type of Government networks giving 1-10 Gbps except only in NY State and Washington DC and small pockets in USA and London city does not have such networks. . Article about GBBN in Times London

Goa goes broadband in hi-tech drive for foreign investment

Ashling OConnor, Goa
Goa is going broadband. And, in a project that would be ambitious even in a developed economy, it aims to have it all done by March. United Telecoms Limited (UTL), the Bangalore-based company awarded the contract nearly a year ago, has laid nearly 250km (155 miles) of cable and says that it has completed the first phase of the project linking the governments headquarters to district offices via a ten gigabits-per-second network. By December, district and village administrations will have one gigabits-per-second connectivity and within five months 320,000 households will have access to speeds of up to ten megabits per second. Initially, the aim is to sign up 80,000 homes to bundled access to voice, data, highspeed internet and television services for about 500 rupees a month a significant discount to buying cable TV, telephone and internet separately. Users will be able to pause and fast-forward live television, hold video-conferences with friends and colleagues and file tax returns straight to the government server. It all seems a little fantastic in a country where nearly half the 1.1 billion population does not even have an electric light in the home. Goa, though, is probably the only place in India where this futuristic scenario stands a chance of becoming reality.
