What is a Commercial Drivers License and how can I get one?

A Commercial Drivers License, or CDL, is required to drive a vehicle over 26,000 lbs. Anyone wanting a CDL must fill out form DL-31CD, Commercial Learners Permit Application. The fee varies, depending on the number of months until expiration of your current drivers license and the number of endorsements desired. An endorsement indicates special training necessary for the safe operation of a particular class or type of vehicle. My family believes one of our elderly relatives should no longer drive because his driving skills have diminished. Is there anything we can do about this situation? Yes. You must send a letter to PennDOTs Bureau of Driver Licensing stating your concerns. Your request will be kept confidential. However, you must include your name, address and daytime telephone number. The driver in question will receive notification from PennDOT to complete specific requirements, such as passing a vision test, physical exam, or the written and driving portions of the drivers exam. If the driver successfully completes the requirements, driving privileges will continue.

Although PennDOT will deliver mail to your post office box, you also must list your actual address. Failure to do so will usually result in a rejection of your application. For example: John Doe, 22 Main St., P.O. Box 123, Anytown, PA 10000.

My drivers license was suspended, but I never returned it to PennDOT. Has my suspension been served? No. You do not receive credit toward serving your suspension until the department receives your drivers license. If you do not have your drivers license, you must fill out form DL-16LC, Acknowledgment of Suspension/Revocation/ Disqualification as Required under Section 1541 of the Vehicle Code. After you have acknowledged your suspension, the department will send you a receipt. If you do not receive a receipt or if you have any other questions, please contact my office. I will soon finish serving my drivers license suspension. How do I get my drivers license back? You should receive a restoration requirements letter from PennDOT before your suspension ends. This letter will list the requirements you must fulfill in order to have your drivers license returned. If you do not receive a restoration requirements letter or have questions, please contact my office.

My drivers license has been suspended. Can I obtain a drivers license to drive back and forth to work?

PennDOT

I allowed my vehicles insurance coverage to lapse and now my vehicle registration privilege has been suspended. Why? PennDOT must suspend the vehicle registration privilege of drivers who allow their insurance coverage to lapse. The suspension is for a period of 90 days. Pennsylvania law requires that all valid license plates without current insurance be surrendered to the department. After the department receives your plates, you will be sent a receipt. At the end of the suspension, PennDOT requires a $50 restoration fee and proof of current insurance. Drivers who allow their insurance to lapse for less than 31 days may avoid suspension by completing form MV-221, if the vehicle was not operated while uninsured. Current proof of insurance also must be provided in order to avoid suspension.

It depends. You must fill out form DL-15, the Occupational Limited License (OLL) Instructions and Petition. This type of drivers license is commonly referred to as a bread-and-butter license. There is a non- refundable $50 petition fee. Based on your driving record and violations, PennDOT will then determine if you are eligible. An OLL will not be issued for specific violations of the Vehicle Code, which include, but are not limited to: Being convicted of a second or subsequent offense of driving under the influence (DUI) of alcohol or a controlled substance, or if your BAC is .10 or greater. Having your license suspended for refusal to submit to chemical testing to determine the amount of alcohol or controlled substance consumed. Being granted Accelerated Rehabilitative Disposition (ARD) for driving under the influence of alcohol or controlled substance and having your license suspended by PennDOT, unless the suspension imposed has been fully served. For additional information and a complete list of the violations that will prohibit you from receiving an OLL, please contact my office. How do I get a vanity registration plate? To get a vanity registration plate, you need to fill out form MV-904, Application for Special Registration Plate. You may make up to three choices for a vanity registration plate on this form. The cost is $20, and you should allow eight to 10 weeks for delivery.
