For many years Westermo products have been used alongside Rockwell automation PLCs. Westermo are a member of the Rockwell encompass group.

Remote access to PLCs is becoming an ever increasing requirement. Linking a modem to the PLC means that remote diagnostics and re configuration can be achieved and at the same time the PLC can also be configured to raise an alert if a problem occurs. There are many different telecom techniques available for providing remote access. PSTN, ISDN and GSM are the most popular. If a conventional dial up line is all that is available then the TD-33 is the best solution. If ISDN is available then the ID-90 will do the job and if there are no lines at all then the GD-01 can be used on the GSM networks. The best solution for remote access is sometimes a combination of techniques.

Making a GSM data connection is really quite simple. The GD-01 uses a standard SIM card that has been enabled for data. A new number is issued by the network provider. Calls can now be made GSM modem to GSM modem, GSM modem to ISDN modem (via the V.110 protocol) or analogue modem to GSM (via V.32 protocol). When not connected to send data the GD-01 can be configured to send an emergency SMS message and the PLCs can be programmed to send other alert messages via SMS.

Remote Connection and Legacy connection to Ethernet

The ED-10 Legacy Connection The ED-10 is designed to allow older legacy equipment to be connected via Ethernet (TCP/IP) The ED-10 is available in two different formats; UDP and TCP. UDP is a connectionless protocol where the serial packet is just encapulated in a UDP packet and sent to the preconfigured IP address. The TCP version is very similar but uses the connection based protocol TCP. With Com Port redirection software loaded onto the PC, each ED-10 TCP can act like a remote Com port (1 to 255). The TCP/IP protocol being used to provide the connections across the network. This technology allows older systems running RS232 or RS485 based protocols to be connected to a top end SCADA or configuration computer using an industrial Ethernet, rather than existing dedicated cabling.

The ED-20 Remote connection The ED-20 is an Industrial PPP router. When used in conjunction with a Westermo TD-33 or ID-90 modem allows remote connections to Ethernet via ISDN or PSTN using the PPP (Point to Point) protocol. No Extra software is required on the remote PC. The connection once established allows the remote user to become part of the industrial network and diagnose faults and update programs.

Configuration of the ED-10 and ED-20 is very flexible by using either the Windows based EDTOOLS configuration software or by using the TELNET protocol. Once the unit is running it is possible to alter the configuration of the device over the network. How quick could it be to install and commission a site wide SCADA System? With Westermos range of Radio Telemetry devices it could be very fast and inexpensive! Now that radios have come of age in terms of their performance and reliability, their use in industry has become increasingly popular. This is due largely to the high reliability that the intelligent digital protocols employed in the radios yield, along with very sound radio design. The RM 105-C is a powerful compliment to the range. This unit allows up to 4,800 channels of information from Radio telemetry units in the field to be fed directly, as digitized values, into a SCADA system in DF1 format. Hence, control and data acquisition are easily obtained, on a site wide basis, without the need for expensive cabling- and no need for shutdowns!
