Rice Varieties (HYV and Aman)* Dr. M. A.

Mazid Hub Manager CSISA(IRRI) Dinajpur Hub (NW Bangladesh) BRRI released 55 Modern varieties ( MV) Rice and four Hybrid rice till 2011 and has been using for cultivation either in Boro, Aus alone or in both Boro & Aus and Aman seasons. Broadly it could be classified into two major groups such as photo sensitive and photo insensitive variety. Photosensitive rice is timely fixed and suitable for cultivation in Aman season only. Its flowering is very much related with day length eg. Latishail, Nigersal, BRRI dhan23, BRRI dhan34 etc flowered within first week of November and mature in early December where 2nd crop planting is delayed due to late harvesting of aman rice. On the other hand photoperiod insensitive varieties are periodically fixed i.e it can be flowered after certain period depending on growth duration in all three seasons (Boro, Aus & Aman). The most important photo insensitive varieties are BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan49, BINA7 in Aman and BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29, BRRI dhan50 in Boro season and also BR24, BRRI dhan48 in Aus season. . Variety suitable for season(s): Aman Rice (BRRI) varieties (24): BR4, BR5, BR10, BR11, BR22, BR23, BR25, BRRI dhan30, BRRI dhan31, BRRI dhan32, BRRI dhan33, BRRI dhan34, BRRI dhan37, BRRI dhan38, BRRI dhan39, BRRI dhan40, BRRI dhan41, BRRI dhan44, BRRI dhan46, BRRI dhan49, BRRI dhan51, BRRI dhan52, BRRI dhan53, BRRI dhan54 i. Further classified Aman variety/varieties in ff: A. Short duration varieties: BRRI dhan33 (115-118 days if TPR & 103-105 days if DSR method of establishment), BRRI dhan49 (135 days) B. Late Aman variety(after flash flood)/Photo sensitive variety: BR22, BR23,BRRI dhan46 C. Flash flood tolerant varieties: BRRI dhan51(Swarna Sub1), BRRI dhan52 (BR11 Sub1) and other potential varieties are IR64 Sub1 and Samba Masuri Sub1 D. Salt tolerant (EC 8-10 dS/m) Aman variety: BRRI dhan53(128 days), BRRI dhan54 (130 days) replacing BRRI dhan40 (145 days) & BRRI dhan41 (148 days) Aman Rice (BINA) variety: BINA dhan7 (118 days)
