Welcome to the second edition of our newsletter. It has

been a really busy time for us since our last newsletter back in January, and we are looking forward to sharing with you all our news. As well as launching our website www.joebingleymemorialfoundation.org.uk we have been involved in lots of fundraising and have made many new friends along the way.

Breaking News
Were pleased to announce that we can now call ourselves a charity! This makes a real difference to us and the way we are able to raise funds and gain sponsorship. We will soon be adding information to our webpage about how you can support us, donate to us through justgiving.com and how to register for Gift Aid.

Our Vision & Values

The Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation was set up to raise awareness of Postnatal Depression and the impact it can have on a family. The trustees would like to share with you the set of values which encompass their vision for the Foundation. o o o o o To inform, educate and offer support to those whose lives are affected by postnatal mental health issues. To de-stigmatise postnatal mental illness, raise awareness and promote discussion and action. To campaign for better service provision and an end to the postcode lottery prevalent in the UK health service. To help to reduce and minimise the number of maternal deaths each year as a result of postnatal mental illness. To support research, to identify the causes of the increasing number of deaths due to PND, examine the key risks and issues that affect sufferers and what can be done to help them. To ensure that NHS Commissioning Bodies and medical services follow appropriate guidelines. Working with them to define standards and understanding of guidelines. Ensure that patients have access to these documents, know and understand what should be available to them To inspire change, motivate and influence standards, guidelines and policies relating to the treatment and care of those with postnatal depression.

The summer edition of the newsletter is dedicated to the memory of Clive Gott, who sadly died suddenly in February this year. He was our dear friend and partner of trustee Elaine Hanzak. Clive, who helped us to raise thousands of pounds at our charity event, in January will remain in our memory and hearts for ever.

AND To always remember Joe, a dedicated health professional, warm and loving wife, mother, daughter, sister and friend to many people.

Weve been busy FUNdraising

Raising money for the Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation is a vital part of our work to ensure we can continue raising awareness about PND e.g. produce information cards, posters, and keep our website up to date. We also plan to run informative workshops in the future by raising vital funds. In January we launched the foundation with a Gangster and Molls Charity night at the Galpharm Stadium in Huddersfield. Ticket sales and an auction raised a whopping 2000 for the charity. Thank you to everyone who supported us!

In April, Dinah held another enjoyable coffee morning at Scholes Cricket Club and raised 150. Those who attended, treated themselves to delicious cupcakes kindly donated by Rachel Swan of Shepley. Rachel bakes extremely tasty and fantastic looking cupcakes and you can place individual orders by giving her a call on or by joining her Facebook page, All Things Nice. You will be amazed!

Communicating with you!

We now have our website up and running www.joebingleymemorialfo undation.org.uk We hope that you will find it a useful source of information and support.

A big Thank You, to The Huddersfield Pendragon Ladies

who have kindly chosen The Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation and the Alzhiemers Society as their two charities for 2011. They organise fundraising events throughout the year; and in April held a Clothes and Bag sale which raised almost 300 to share out between their two charities. Fundraising events also planned for this year are the Holmfirth Duck Race and Gala, www.virtualhuddersfield.com/duck.htm, in Holmfirth on July 3rd, a Psychic night, race night, bonfire and a fundraising ball. More information about their calendar for the coming year will be published on our website as soon as it is available, anyone wishing to join the ladies should contact Rachael Smith on 07734490011.

Supporting us around the UK

Running for The Joanne (Joe) Bingley Memorial Foundation We would like to put the spotlight on a fabulous and swift footed supporter, Michelle Benson from Widnes. Michelle ran the Liverpool Half Marathon 27th 2011 in 2hrs 3mins and raised a total of 600 for the Foundation. What a fabulous lady and fantastic achievement! Michelle, who has a 20 month old daughter and works as a management accountant, is supporting us because of her own experience with postnatal depression. She has also recently contributed to a NHS report on postnatal depression and spoken about it at a conference.

Joes friends do her proud!

One of our visions is to always remember Joe and we know she would have been proud of what her friends achieved at a charity pie and pea quiz night in May. Organiser and quiz master extraordinaire, Janet Morrison, did a fabulous job of planning the event at the appropriately named pub The Nightingale in Lindley. Hundreds of people came along to the fun night and their general knowledge was put to the test! They also enjoyed a tasty pie and pea supper, kindly donated by the landlord. The night raised an amazing wait for it 750 yes you heard right 750. Thank you to everyone who came along to support the charity and make it such a fantastic night.

On the Threshold - Ann Girling tells her Story

Ann Girling, one of the trustees of the foundation, runs a business called On the Threshold. She comes from a background in health visiting and since leaving her last post in 2002 has become an accredited life coach. Her passion has always been and remains to make a difference to the lives of women who have been touched in some way by postnatal depression. The fundamental belief of the business is that every woman has a unique contribution to make to the world. But all sorts of things happen in our lives that get in the way and cause us to lose sight of whats important to us; postnatal depression is just one example. Even a mild depression can have an impact on how a woman views herself, and on her confidence and self esteem. Other illnesses or events include breast cancer, miscarriage, fertility difficulties, divorce, and redundancy. Raising a family can also have this effect. On The Threshold works with women who want to enrich their lives and overcome these barriers to have what they truly want and be who they truly want to be. We provide individual coaching by phone, face to face and Skype, also group coaching and in 2011 will be launching an online coaching package. Also In 2011 Ann will be publishing her book Journey to Chocolate: reflections of a 21st Century womans life and her intention is to hold a launch event in aid of the Joanne Bingley Memorial Foundation.

On Saturday June 18, 2011 starting at 8am trustee, Dinah Wylde will be taking part in the Great Yorkshire Bike Ride. www.gybr.co.uk The 70 mile bike ride, Wetherby to Filey will be a big challenge to Dinah as her usual daily cycle to work is only a 12 mile round trip. Light at the end of the tunnel for women in Hull

In a quest to find out about where advice and support is available for women and families affected by Postnatal Illness, Dinah Wylde spent a day learning more about the support group, House of Light based in Hull. House of Light was originally set up by Karan Cunningham & Joanne Morton who both suffered PND severely. What they found was that talking to someone who had suffered and recovered from the illness helped them both enormously. In the 3 years since they began they have offered support and advice to over 600 mums, dads and families affected by postnatal illness. They have also had sufferers contacting them by email, from all over the world for advice and support. To ensure that they are accessible to all those affected House of Light offer a range of support - email, telephone, 1:1, groups and drop ins. To ensure effective support House of Light works in close partnership with other health professionals and organisations e.g. Sure Start & local NHS Meeting Karan and Joanne, and other members of the team, was a really up lifting experience as I witnessed such passion, love and enthusiasm in their mission to listen to, support and be there for women who are really suffering from this dreadful illness.

Then there were 5!

Following increased funding due to the initial success of the House of Light project the team have now gone from 2 to 5 members. Jeannie, Sarah, and Jayne also suffered from severe PND and once fully recovered from Karan and Jos support they became volunteers for House of Light. When more funds became available they were the ideal people to work at House of Light and extend the available support. Its good to be able to announce that we now have some dads stories on the website and thank those dads who have come forward and shared their experience of living with postnatal depression. If you have any information about support for fathers who are helping their partner or suffering from the condition themselves, please contact us so that we can share this much needed information.
