VET INFORMATION CORNER

ITS TIME FOR YOUR MEDICINE!

Apart from the sharp teeth which you are supposed to manoeuvre around, there are spiky claws poised to do damage at the end of what seems to be like more than four legs coming at your from all directions. Not only that, every one of the feline wiles come into play: the body wriggles all over the place or even going into reverse. Some cats have an uncanny way of avoiding the pills the best are those that pretend to swallow it and then spit it out in a quiet corner or took it under a rug when you are not looking. Sound familiar?? The first you know of the missed medication is when you next hoover or dust!! You may think they are intelligent for their crafty ways if were not for the fact that you are giving it to them for their own good!! Liquid Dose Medicines are best given with a plastic dropper or syringe (ask your vet for this). Tilt the cats head up, insert the dropper in the space between the canine and the back teeth and slowly squirt the liquid into the mouth. Give only small amounts at a time and allow the cat to swallow after each dose to avoid choking. Dont crush You may think it is better to crush a tablet and sprinkle powder onto your cats food, it rarely works. Cats can detect powder and will simply not eat or eat around it. Some tablets should not be crushed or broken anyway. They can contain bitter tasting drugs encased in an outer casing. These can cause your cat to salivate profusely and cause distress. Some cats will do this with any tablet anyway. The best way to administer pills is with a pill gun, used with a little water or butter around the pill will usually work. Taste too good Some yeast-flavoured tablets can be so palatable that a cat may be tempted to gobble them all at once with potentially dire results. Its best to keep all animal medicines stored safely. The same goes for your own medication, including vitamin pills. In brief Be kind but firm. Try not to frighten the cat or the process will be even more difficult next time. Two pairs of hands are better than one. Aim to get the pill in first time around the cat will become more restless with further bungles attempts. If you know that your cat is likely to object to pills, ask your vet if there is a liquid or paste alternative.
