My dear, The news that a new paper-based device called a Flipback (its a so-called analog book) might topple the Kindle from its stranglehold at the pinnacle of digital nonsense is less comforting than you might expect. For a start, it has to be printed on rice paper and its designed to be read with one hand. We have e-books and pdfs and Kindle editions and proper books printed on proper paper and some wise authors and some very engaged readers and whatever you do with this catalog(ue) whether you have the analog(ue) or the digilog(ue) please use two hands and do be careful out there. Yours faithfully,

This book is about dealing with messes. Sometimes known as wicked problems, messes (or messy situations) are easy to spot: we dont know where to start; we cant define them; everything connects to everything else; we get in a muddle thinking about them; we often try to ignore some aspect/s of them; when we do something, they usually get worse; trying to fix them like a simple problem never works. Examples of messes include: the healthcare system in your country...dealing with a family break-up... exploring change and making it happen in your organisation...worrying about how to look after your elderly parents.
Whether youre new to Systems Thinking or have long experience, the book invites you to develop your skills through working with your own messy situations. Its written for managers, project managers, team leaders, change leaders, strategists, policy makers and concerned citizens as well as university students from a broad set of disciplines.

Thinking to Resolve the Complexity of Business and Public Issues
VinCEnT BaRaBBa
This is the book that made a laughing stock of the UK Audit Commission, famously ridiculed the culture of targets and deliverology that for years has characterised public services in England and set in train the conversion of the public sector to systems thinking. The reviews say it all: The argument compellingly made in this book by John Seddon is that the Government has designed failure into almost everything it does on our behalf. It has not done so deliberately; but it is culpable because it has failed to listen to people who know better how to run services on behalf of the customer rather than the producer. Philip Johnston, Daily Telegraph One of the strengths of Seddons diagnosis is that, as a consultant, he has seen almost every public service from the inside. From trading standards to planning and housing repairs, all exhibit the same dysfunction, being forced to conform to a work design that starts from the wrong end the requirements of government rather than those of the citizen. Simon Caulkin, The Observer
No policy maker or public sector manager can afford NOT to read this book. And, if you dont believe the author, read the Case Studies (below).
Six detailed Case Studies (from Housing, Transport, HR, etc.) which convincingly demonstrate that John Seddons recipe (above) actually works and delivers the results he promised.
MANAGEMENT f -LAWS
Weve all heard of Sods (or Murphys) Law if anything can go wrong, it will. Most of us know Parkinsons Law work expands to fill the time available for its completion. Now Management f-Laws brings together a collection of 81 of Professor Russell Ackoffs wittiest and most subversive insights into the world of business.
For managers, leaders and their victims as well as MBA students, these two books offer the essence of Ackoff at his sparkling and most digestible best.
At first glance, the 81 aphorisms, paradoxes and put-downs seem nothing special. The shock comes as the implication sinks in, followed by a chain-reaction of secondary onesuntil shocks are going off all over and you are in no doubt that you are in the presence of one of the profoundest and wittiest brains ever to engage with the bizarre human activity called management. Simon Caulkin,The Observer
40 new f-LAWS plus an insightful, extended introduction to Systems Thinking as developed by Russ Ackoff. If you dont know what Systems Thinking is, start here. This and the previous title give you all 121 of Ackoffs f-Laws. 7
MEMORIES
You might think Memories would be the fond autobiography of a grumpy old guru. Not a bit of it! There are stories of his chats with the Queen of Iran, his introduction of theme parks to the US, appearing naked in front of his commanding officer in World War II but theyre all there to do a serious job.
Published posthumously, Memories is a very gentle and human introduction to this most rigorous and demanding of thinkers. It will be appreciated by fellow academics and consultants, managers and business studies students.
Ackoff knew his students remembered stories better than teachings, so he uses them to deliver a succession of principles and aphorisms developed during his life.
ruSSell ackoff ~ SyStemS thinking ~ DeSign thinking ~ organiSational theory ~ peter Senge ~ charleS hanDy
Russ was an incisive, lifelong critic of the modern organizational form. He saw its limitations and argued for radical redesign. He was an advocate for major re-visioning and processes of change that started with helping people see what they truly valued and where they truly wanted to get and then working backwards to see what it would take to get there. Peter Senge, from his Foreword to Memories
Towards the end of his life, Russ Ackoff determined to explain how some of the apparently insignificant misinterpretations of language and meaning he observed during his long years of research can, in practice, have farreaching consequences. His aim was to dissolve (not solve or resolve) some of the many disputes in professional and private life that revolve around such misunderstandings. In this last manuscript that he was to complete before his death he does exactly that.
For managers, leaders, executives, MBA students, hierarchs and heterarchs of all ages, this is a perfect introduction to Ackoffs writing and thinking. It is, as Charles Handy says, a manual for clear thinking and a fitting tribute to the man.
This Systems Thinking approach to leadership asks us to look beyond individuals, managers, leaders and management training programmes. Using the analogy of an aquarium (where water quality determines the health of the fish), Bill Tate reviews a range of issues like: Distributing authority ~ management vs. organisation development ~ the structural gaps that account for waste, rework, poor communication and failure ~ transferring learning ~ organisational competence ~ accountability ~ the organisations culture and shadow-side.
Used with the Toolkit (below), this is a practical book for HR and other senior executives who want to run an open, effective, responsible and empowering organisation but arent sure where to start. Also a powerful stimulus to fresh thinking for business students.
Full of practical tips and insights a must read book for any leadership or organisational development practitioner who wants to make a difference to business success. Linda Holbeche, CIPD
Designed for use in conjunction with The Search for Leadership (above) this toolkit presents nine self-assessment questionnaires in nine separate modules with detailed implementation advice and guidance designed to give any organisation a complete picture of itself: Management Development ~ Organisation Development ~ Learning ~ Competence ~ Culture ~ Decline ~ Systems ~ The Shadow ~ Accountability. 9

We need to do something differently but are not sure what to do or how to do it Scientists explain complexity but dont tell you what to do in practical terms. This book provides the solution for people who are looking for a commonsense and pragmatic way to understand the complexity that they experience and work with daily. Drawing on a wide range of experiences both their own and others and using the insights gained from Complexity Science, the authors have developed a framework and approach which practitioners can use to understand, influence and benefit from the dynamic phenomena in their working contexts.
A bible for complexity practitioners showing how the underlying principles of Complexity Science can be put to work in practice with an in-depth, systematic framework showing when and how to shape and influence dynamic phenomena in their working context for successful and sustainable solutions.
Practitioners who are engaged in dealing with complex issues across diverse domains and contexts will find this book illuminating, thought provoking and most of all useful in guiding them to ways of moving forwards in their endeavours to understand and then exploit that understanding for greater purpose It should be on the bookshelf of anyone seriously engaged with any complex issue. Prof. Brian Collins, Chief Scientific Adviser, UK Dept. for Transport and Dept. for Business, Innovation and Skills.

ADVENTURES IN COMPLEXITY
lEsliE KUHn
The focus here is on organisations and the life of organisations. It shows how complexity theory can be applied in/to organisations. Seven case studies, from a not-for-profit to a pharmaceutical firm, examine this sophisticated way of thinking and its application.
For leaders, managers, and anyone who works in an organisation, here is a straight-forward and practical way to apply an important theory. For academics, researchers and students, this book shows how complexity theory can be translated into the workplace.
A short and effective introduction to the art and science of complexity. A very useful resource introducing the terminology and thinking patterns required to adopt the complexity paradigm as a way of thinking and reasoning about organisations... Prof. Darren Dalcher, Middlesex University a thoughtful, innovative and above all practical book about the implications and applications of complexity science for management. Written in a refreshingly engaging style, it packs a lot of useful information in a relatively small book. not only a major new contribution to the literature on management and complexity, but to management literature as a whole. Prof. Alfonso Montuori, Department Chair, Transformative Inquiry, California Institute of Integral Studies Because of [her] deep understanding of complexity and organizations, she can take material others find daunting, and without sacrificing any depth, make it accessible to those who want to understand and apply the potential at the edge of chaos. Prof. Deborah P. Bloch, University of San Francisco

Business leaders with a job to do often conclude that any interaction with opposing views is a messy and unwelcome distraction. Scaled up to a global level, this belief causes big problems. The international financial crisis of recent years perfectly illustrates the danger of allowing one voice (individualist/markets) to drown out all the others.
Brings Cultural Theory into focus with case studies of UNEP, the UK Department for International Development, Shell Oil, The World Bank, Nepal, Arsenal Football Club. Its lively and witty presentation and its rigorous attention to detail makes it accessible to academics, managers, policy makers and the interested general public.
a timely reminder of what a broad, reflective and theoretically coherent social science of organizations can offer. the marriage of cultural and organization theory could provide a very fruitful springboard for future research. Prof. Stuart Clegg, University of Technology, Sydney; Distinguished Visiting Professor, Judge Institute, University of Cambridge This theory has so many strengths, it is difficult to know where to start. In particular, I like the view that change always results through the clumsy interaction of ways of thinking and behaving. Matthew Taylor, Chief Executive, RSA, London Wow! What a revelation - the thoughts and ideas, the clarity in the writing, even down to the idiomatic expressions and down-to-earth style - this is what great academic writing is all about. Ben Corringham, researcher, Wageningen University, Netherlands Buy the book. If you find this half as interesting as I did, you must get hold of [it]. Tudor Rickards, Professor of Creativity and Organizational Change, Manchester Business School

In his youth Gerard Fairtlough, thought, like everyone else, that hierarchy was a natural and necessary part of organisations. It took years of working for a large multinational (Shell) for him to begin to doubt that this was so, and more years before he started to explore the alternatives to hierarchy. In the end he has become convinced that it is vital to question hierarchys inevitability and to develop alternatives to it. Tinkering isnt enough; huge shifts are needed if our businesses are to become more profitable and creative, if our government agencies are to become more effective, and if our non-governmental organisations are to make real changes in the world and act in a really responsible way. His method in this book is to expound some general principles and to develop some general models useful in all organisations. His theory (Triarchy Theory) gave our publishing company its name and his beliefs underpin our philosophy that organisations are inevitably messy but could do better.
For Alan Sugar, senior managers, and anyone who works in an organisation, here is a clear and practical explanation of a quite essential piece of knowledge: namely that hierarchy is just one way (and a not very good one) of getting things done. For academics, researchers and MBA students, this gets to the heart of many organisational issues.

Shell famously survived the oil crisis of 1973 because of its use of Scenario Planning. The Bush Administration had a range of scenarios drawn up for the aftermath of the Iraq invasion but ignored the ones that suggested the violence and disorder that actually ensued.
This is a book for thoughtful business leaders, for government policy makers and advisors
Facing the Fold is a luminous distillation of philosophical wisdom and modern management theory. A richer, more readable introduction to the theory and practice of scenario planning does not exist. Robert W. Fuller, Author of All Rise: Somebodies, Nobodies, and the Politics of Dignity Jay Ogilvy has for decades been an intrepid pioneer in the development of both the practice and theory of scenario planning. This wonderful collection of his writings is therefore a most welcome and valuable contribution to the field. Adam Kahane, Reos Partners and University of Oxford Ogilvy delivers a dramatic advance in scenario thinking, transforming scenarios from mere tools to vehicles for deep discovery in the face of uncertainty. Facing the Fold will change forever the way one thinks about the future and the possibilities it holds. Paul Saffo, Foresight Discern Analytics More than ever, we need to be able to think clearly about the future. I can think of no better practitioner and theorist than Jay Ogilvy. I have had the great pleasure and learning experience of participating in several scenario workshops led by Ogilvy over the years: mind-stretching experiences that proved to be prophetic in hindsight. On Q cards can be used as a creativity tool, a meeting interlude, an intergenerational game, a discussion forum... On Q has 70 carefully selected prompt cards (Qcards), each of which asks a question - which will be answered by one person, a team or everyone in turn, depending on the rules you choose to play. Some Qcards ask for snapshots of our past, others ask for our thoughts about our lives today and some for our hopes and fears for the future. For example: What have you tried unsuccessfully to change? What prejudices do you have that you find hard to throw off? What is the first advertisement you can remember? What one thing would you like to guarantee?
Designed for consultants, facilitators, team leaders and trainers, as well as anyone running a meeting or looking for new ways to get different generations to talk to one another.

We are confronted by major disasters and disruptions. The most familiar and headline grabbing are natural disasters such as earthquakes and superstorms. Whole swathes of infrastructure can be destroyed in such incidents affecting millions of people. Combine these with man-made disasters and we have a new level of hazard [when multiple problems occur at the same time] called synchronous failure. The implications for our world have yet to be properly addressed.
This gem of a book will appeal to managers and organisational and political leaders but also to environmental campaigners, social psychologists and educationalists.
The book would also make a fine textbook for any one of a number of disciplines - economics, business, organization development, systems thinking, and even philosophy. Steve Byers, The In2In Network

Education
A manifesto from Scotland, a pamphlet for UK school governors and a cautionary tale from California.
While conflict over school education is the norm in many countries, a visionary movement towards educational transformation is under way in Scotland under the banner of A Curriculum for Excellence (CfE). This short book offers insights, practical tools, worked examples and recommendations based on the International Futures Forums work with educational leaders in Scotland on how to turn the CfE into a practical instrument for educational transformation. Describes six features needed to make CfE a workable policy framework for transformational change in education around the world, not just in Scotland.
Written for practical innovators teachers, school leaders and policy makers. Explains the key ideas clearly and simply and makes pragmatic proposals for implementing them. Addresses difficult issues deftly. Attractively illustrated in full colour.
Recommendation: Take a little time to read it. Its really very important. This small perfectly formed book with its heavy duty, and intriguing, title, is a must for anyone who would appreciate a model in which to develop understandings for the future of education. The writers take you through a six point plan for pragmatic visionaries and 5 sections of argument for transformational change Head to Head

Innovation 1/3
The Dilemmas of Innovation An inside guide to creativity in a modern business.
This ground-breaking meta-book is a thoughtful guide to the process of innovation. It chronicles the work of six staff members at The Economist magazine, who were given 100,000 and six months to come up with the next big, Internet-related thing that the publishing giant should do.
For anyone involved with innovation or creativity in business or the public sector, or working in a media company or simply working in a team, this book suggests new ways of approaching a research or innovation project. Also offers a fascinating look inside a contemporary London media business.
Each chapter is a meditation on a specific need or requirement for team building, creativity, innovation, communication and a host of other topics... Id highly recommend this book to any team embarking on an innovation initiative it examines a lot of the issues and challenges of building an innovation team and doing the difficult, messy work of innovation. Jeffrey Phillips, Consultant, OVO Innovation a series of reflections on the innovation process that highlights the limitations of the conventional how-to approach of most management books There are few answers here but lots of good questions. They are expressed in the form of dilemmas at the end of each section, underlining the fact that management decisions are highly contextual, and that what you choose to do will depend upon the situation you are in. David K. Hurst, Strategy + Business If you are currently planning an innovation project or culture change at your organization, this book is an essential read to help remind you of the potential pitfalls that await you in such an undertaking. How Social Media are reshaping the world of work and what managers and businesses should do about it.
For Monkeys With Typewriters, Jemima Gibbons interviewed more than 50 thought leaders in the social web: executives at Google,Yahoo and Salesforce; developers at MySpace and Microsoft; and web pioneers like Tim OReilly and Craig Newmark. It is packed with insights from CEOs of small, savvy start-ups, as well as lessons from senior staff from multinationals like British Telecom, Ford, IBM and Shell.
This is a book for leaders and managers looking to understand the impact of social media at work and hoping to get an idea of how their colleagues are addressing the many issues raised in the process. Its also a key source for researchers in this area.
a very people-centred approach to the topic of leadership and management. You could even say that in the style of a social network the story of the book is based around profiles. Certainly Monkeys with Typewriters is very much concerned with the character of leaders in the Web 2.0 world, as its chapter headings Passion, Openness, Listening, Generosity suggest. succeeds in giving a humane sense of whats involved in dealing with this new world. David Jennings, Digital business consultant a new and refreshing read, a sparkling gem in a field of proliferating drudgery of read this now and it will change your life books presents a rich tapestry of current thinking and practices that harness the power of open information flow in the realtime web. What defines the worlds most innovative firms? Design Thinking and Trust in the spotlight
Sets out the defining practices and procedures of some of the worlds most innovative (and successful) companies Southwest Airlines, Whole Foods, Starbucks, Google, Innocent Drinks, Shanghai Tang and others. Reveals a pattern of distinctive ways (Design Thinking) in which they differentiate themselves from traditional firms: from managing the business and running the workplace to talking to customers and recruiting, motivating and rewarding staff. From this pattern, Andrew constructs a Design Thinking model built on the principles of architecture, design and anthropology. He sets out the rules for implementing that model and creating organisations equipped to manage the known and to build the unknown.
Business leaders can, quite literally, measure themselves against the best and most innovative firms in the world while researchers and academics will find a statement of what defines current management and organisational best practice.

Every other book or article on management, leadership and organisations tells us to value failure and the opportunities for learning that it offers. But we (governments, public figures, company directors, public services, schools, individuals) remain fearful of it the stain that can end careers and destroy credibility. In The Failure Files, leading thinkers and practitioners discuss different aspects of the concept of failure and how it relates to a variety of settings in todays society from education to social history to psychology to public services.

This book is not entirely conventional. Its an assemblage of sometimes unreliable and fractious documents hung around a flawed, yet epic tale of the authors recent journey in the footsteps of an eminent Edwardian who, in 1912, walked across northern England planting acorns but stopped when his adopted cur, Pontiflunk, was run over by an early automobile. It floats numerous narratives around this travelogue, weaving a matrix of possible trajectories for the reader from passive contemplation to wild pilgrimage and activist pedestrianism.
An extraordinary and unexpected book for academics and slightly unusual ordinary people.
The second half has advice, tasks, guidance, kits and mental maps: a toolbag of information and suggestions for the reader who wants to take the next step. Mixing rambling discourses and postdramatic performance with soft architecture and post-politics-politics, this is a guide to strolling in the cracks in the pavement and a means to walking out on the Spectacle.

Edward Lloyd-Jones has pulled together the strands of what now seems to be a systematic dismantling of all that has been achieved in the last 17 years. He raises questions which need to be urgently addressed. District Judge Nicholas Crichton
Looks at modern-day myths, including ones involving the UK National Health Service, the BBC and climate change. Suggests they are driven by an underlying and often unconscious need to explain and maintain the social order. Shows the importance of myth for social stability.
