The Alchemist Book and Scrapbook Assignments The following assignments are to be completed and put into an anthology

(collection of various works). The work must be completed during class and at home. You will have the opportunity to use computers, which all work must be typed. Writing assignments are required to have a minimum of 3-5 paragraphs. The Anthology and the Scrapbook are going to be worth 40% of your Final Exam Grade. You will also be graded on a daily basis for class work and homework; therefore, you must show proof of work daily to earn grades. If you do not produce or show your progress your class work and homework grades will result in zeros. Keep a dream journal for one week. Try to interpret what you think they mean on your own, then research what they might mean according to Freud or Jung, or according to an ancient culture (medieval, Egyptian, Greek, African, etc.) At least 5 entries with a minimum of two paragraphs along with citations of where you found the information Coelho states that simple things are the most valuable and only wise people appreciate them. Produce a written or artistic response (or bring something to class) which depicts something that is simple yet valuable to you. Be prepared to explain specifically why/ how the item is valuable Santiago is guided by his dreams and by omens which appear to him throughout his journey. Write about a noteworthy dream you have had, or about an omen which guided you somehow during the course of your life. How did you interpret the dream or omen, and how did it influence your life? What processes were involved? Who performed it and why? Who were the famous alchemists of the medieval period? 2. Who is Melchizedek? What role does he play in the Old Testament? 3. What are the Five Pillars of Islam (p. 54). What is the Koran? 4. Explore the concept of Soul of the World as different religions and philosophies define it. 5. Research the tribal ways of the Bedouins of the Sahara (77). 6. Research one of the geographical settings from the novel. 7. Research the biblical story of Joseph from Egypt and make comparisons between him and Santiago. Create a poem (minimum of 10 lines) titled My Personal Legend detailing your hopes, dreams, or your destiny. Create a catalogue of memorable and meaningful quotes as you read The Alchemist . Then briefly discuss their importance to you. Create an exchange of love letters between Santiago and Fatima during their separation. (Should be a minimum of 4 letters, 2 from each character)
