Welcome
Founded in the beautiful city of Sydney in 1999, AIT has been home to thousands of students from Australia, North and South America, Asia and Europe. We offer Bachelor and Vocational courses which are recognised by most of Australias leading Universities. We provide an exciting and inspiring education that prepares students for successful careers in 2D and 3D animation, games development, digital media, graphic design, interactive website design, software development and online business. This is achieved through a dynamic curriculum that is regularly updated to meet industry and market trends, as well as through experienced staff and a creative learning environment. Our students and instructors share a passion for the unique blend of art and technology, where technology and creativity converge. But most of all, students come to AIT seeking the practical skills, in-depth knowledge and experience they need to enjoy a fulfilling career, doing what they love. AIT was the first school in the country to offer a motion capture facility in 2003 and is the first organisation in Australia to offer markless motion capture in 2010. We also have the latest multimedia workstations, powerful software for 3D environments and real-time interactivity. In late 2010, we moved to our new state-of-the-art premises in Sydneys Education District of Ultimo. This purpose designed, vibrant new campus located midway between Sydney University and University Technology Sydney has already inspired many! We stay connected to Industry by supporting multimedia events, involving professionals in our curriculum development and participating in Industry conventions and exhibitions. Our graduates work all over the world, pursuing careers in graphic design, multimedia productions, games, film, and much more. While building their imaginative portfolios of professional, quality work to carry into their careers, they also build a network of life-long friends and colleagues to share knowledge and experiences, around the globe.

CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGIES

Campus & Facilities

The AIT campus is a creative space with the latest interactive technologies.

ORGANIC MOTION
AIT was the first educational institution in Australia to offer courses in motion capture technology. The recently commissioned motion capture system is designed and manufactured by Organic Motion of New York, and is the first of its kind implemented in Australia. Motion capture is an innovative real-time solution combining hardware and software for motion tracking and real-time animation. This equipment enables animators to easily transform the motion of a person into a digital signal where the animator could effortlessly control the virtual character. The hardware comprises of sixteen camera sensors installed around the system which detects the full range of movements by the actor and replicates the realistic human movement onto a character. The resulting animated sequences are designed to meet the insatiable public who are fascinated by films such as Avatar, Toy Story 3, or Lord of the Rings. A similar motion capture technology is also used to produce some of the best selling international video games like the Uncharted 2 and Assassins Creed II. These digitised movements may be applied to a wide range of unique functions and research such as high level game interface and virtual stage performance. Here at AIT, we lead students through the entire Motion Capture process - from initial setup through to optimisation and post-production. This empowers students to add realistic human-like behaviour to their original games and animation work which they could proudly add to their professional portfolio. Our collaboration with other motion capture pioneers around the World allows us an endless realm of research opportunities. www.organicmotion.com

3DVIA VIRTOOLS
Virtools, a behaviour engine and real-time render was introduced into AITs curriculum back in 2003 to accelerate the understanding of the elements of complex programming. Virtools is one of the very few commercial tools that offer a complete range of features that enable users to create virtual environments with a simple click-of-a-mouse, without the need for complex coding. A user does not have to be proficient in any specific programming language to be able to give their objects behaviour and reaction to human input within its environment. Adding physics to an object such as gravity or elasticity can easily be done on Virtools. Unusual behavior can be given to objects within a virtual environment thereby, creating an interactive world of ones own imagination. Some examples of commercial Virtools games are: Mercury Meltdown (available on Sony PSP and Nintendo Wii); Sarkaban Game Studios Lazy Raiders (available on Xbox Live Arcade); and Facebooks first ever 3D game called Billions, Save Them All. This powerful technology is not simply restricted to creating games. Virtools is widely used in industry as it allows individuals to create rapid prototype through the modern visual scripting. This allows businesses to harvest their capabilities for the efficient development of complex 3D visual models or simulations. Virtools was also used to support the first ever World Expo Online experience that brought unprecedented real-time 3D interactivity and 360-degree immersive walkthrough experience to hundreds of millions of online visitors of the recent World Expo 2010 Shanghai event. AIT remains the sole training provider of 3DVIA Virtools in Australia. www.3dvia.com

Pandora Room The Pandora features Australias first markerless Motion Capture System where students can grasp the latest technology for real-time animation.

ACADEMIC BOARD
AITs Academic Board is composed of widely experienced members who represent industry, academia, students and faculty. Both the Charter for the Academic Board and the current board members are shown on AITs website. The Academic Board has responsibility for academic policy making, academic administration, the curriculum oversight, and makes recommendations on academic policy and regulations to allow AITs educational objectives to be achieved. The Academic Board is and shall remain an independent group that is composed specifically of members representing a wide range of experience directly relevant to the Higher Education programme offered by AIT. Its authority, while devolved from the Board of Directors allows freedom to report as necessary to the Board of Directors regarding the Higher Education and Vocational courses taught at AIT, and regarding any new or emerging issues that may arise. AITs Academic Board also forms sub-committees with specific functions. The most prominent of these is the Curriculum Committee, who meet at the end of each trimester in order to review matters relating directly to: the provision of subjects; major reviews and changes to subjects or their assessment; the benchmarking of AIT subjects and programmes against other appropriate tertiary providers.

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Quality Assurance is AITs way to maintain and increase quality of education over time. AIT works constantly to ensure that all of our programs are run at a high standard and that our programs are reviewed to facilitate improvement. As part of this process we have a range of Quality Assurance guidelines and it is practised throughout the many phases of running the academic aspects of AIT. In accord with good practice guidelines suggested by the Australian Universities Quality Agency (AUQA), our Quality Assurance is focused along a series of levels, from the formation of all original academic policies, through to the processes involved in implementing them. The broad outlines of Quality Assurance are: Institutional goals Academic Board Strategic planning Use of data Academic policies Stakeholder feedback Benchmarking of academic performance Consistent academic standards

REAL EXPERIENCE
We know the importance of providing the most immersive and relevant educational experience to our students. That is why our courses are focused around getting students exposed to the Real World Experience.

Curriculum

Client Projects Client Projects provide an opportunity for AIT students to apply the knowledge and skills obtained in their studies to real industry projects for an existing business. Representatives of companies from various industries work closely with students in developing a tangible project for their organisational needs. This can include projects ranging from company websites & brand identity, promotional animation, architectural visualisation, to online educational resources and many more. The Client Project provides students with valuable lessons in the areas of team work, meeting project deadlines, reporting, presenting and adhering to project brief. The project also provides important learning experiences such as working with a client and the various issues associated with working in real business context. Small Project Management Students learn the essential theory of managing projects and will work in small teams to produce documentation for a small business venture of their choice. The emphasis is on project management of typical tasks and on providing a thorough understanding of how project management can be vital for the successful completion of major tasks or tasks requiring many resources.

Development Project AIT recognises the importance of solid, practical skills especially in the creative industry. Students are required not only to constantly add to their own professional portfolio, but also to develop a special project which draws upon their area of expertise and interest. This project may encompass any aspects of multimedia which the student chooses to focus upon and provides a good insight into the entire development project process, from initial conception of ideas, to development, design, creation and evaluation. Professional Development (Portfolio) Professional Development provides the opportunity for students to professionally brand and package themselves in preparation for entrance to the multimedia industry. Students are guided on design and portfolio considerations that include effective layout, audience interaction, targeted design, brand establishment and recognition, as well as effective resume and personal presentation. While students prepare to enter the industry, they also learn how to communicate with employers as well as clients through establishing and maintaining business relationships.
