Logical Domain
Troubleshooting
Raj Lalit 1/14/2010

Logical Domain New Technology introduced in Solaris-10. It Allows you to create multiple OS running on the same Hardware. Sometime While configuring, we get stuck & waste time in troubleshooting. This Doc Provide overview of First Level troubleshooting & act as First AID in Field.

Description This document refers to different services associated with LDOM and to check whether it is started or not.

Symptoms Unable to start Ldom Unable to create Ldom Unable to get the console of the Ldom

Purpose/Scope:

This document provides steps to verify which are all the services needs to be running for a LDOM to start.

Steps to Follow Below are two basic services needs to be running for the ldom to start/work properly 1. svc:/ldoms/ldmd:default ------------------------------------ ldom service 2. svc:/ldoms/vntsd:default -------------------------------------virtual console service

Dated: 14-Jan-2010

File To be checked: The state of the service should be online, rather than disbaled / Maintenence If the state of the service is in maintenance then we need to check

/var/svc/log/ldoms-ldmd:default.log for the ldm logs /var/svc/log/ldoms-vntsd:default.log for the vntsd logs check in the /var/adm/messages file.

Terms to Know :
####################################################################################

Ldom handles virtual services like (V)CPU, (V)MAU, (V)Memory, IO, VSW, VDS, VCC. Any issues in these services can cause the ldmd service to go into maintenance mode.

Below are the details of the virtual devices and its functionalities ___________________________________________________________________ CPU : Virtual CPU. Each UltraSPARC(R)-T1 CPU consists of 4, 6, or 8 cores with 4 threads. Each thread can be allocated as a virtual CPU.

Dated: 14-Jan-2010

MAU :

Mathematical Arithmetic Unit (Cryptographic MAU), which provides Accelerated RSA/DSA encryption.

Memory: Physical memory can be virtually mapped into a logical Domain.

I/O :

PCI-E controller that is allocated to a service domain.

VSW :

Virtual Switch Service. VSWprovides virtual network access for guest Domains to the physical network ports.

VNET :

Virtual Network. This port in a guest domain is connected to a VSWservice in a service domain.

VDS :

Virtual Disk Service. VDS provides virtual storage services for guest domains.

VDSDEV :

Virtual Disk Service Device. The VDSDEV is a physical storage medium that is virtualized by a VDS in a service domain.

Dated: 14-Jan-2010

VDISK

VDISK in a guest domain is connected to a VDS in a service domain.

VCC

Virtual Console Concentrator. The VCC provides a virtual console for each logical domain in the control domain.

VCONS :

This port in a guest domain is connected to a VCC service in the Control domain.

OBP

Each logical domain has its own OpenBoot[TM] PROM instance. The NVRAM variables are stored within the domain.
