ADJETIVOS

Part-time jobs – empregos de meio período

Full-time service – serviço de tempo integral

modificam.

International scenario – cenário internacional

Natural resources – recursos naturais

seem (parecer), smell (cheirar), sound (parecer), appear (aparecer), make (fazer), taste ( saborear).

All of this sounds good.

Tudo isso parece bom.

Some dogs can become aggressive.

Alguns cães podem se tornar agressivos.

Aula 02

Soccer team – time de futebol

the dead – os mortos

the elderly – os idosos
the deaf – os surdos
the rich – os ricos
the poor – os pobres
the jobless – os desempregados
the old – os velhos
the young – os jovens

The old are very experienced. - Os idosos são muito experientes.

She believes in the resurrection of the dead.

nossos sentimentos.

They were all amazed.

Eles ficaram muito impressionados.

The crowds are satisfied.

As multidões estão satisfeitas.

DICA:
Observe a

outro. Usa-se a seguinte estrutura:

Less (menos) + Adjetivo + than (do que)

Joan is less tall than Mary.

Joana é menos alta que Maria.

The fact that one man’s violence is less frequent or less intense than another’s does not make it
excusable.

negativas

Recent headlines report that eating eggs may be as harmful to your arteries as smoking
cigarettes. (Medical Advices EN)

The weather today is very cold. It is colder than yesterday.

O clima hoje está muito frio. Está mais frio que ontem.

The question number 23 was easy. It was easier than the question 22.
A questão 23 foi fácil. Foi mais fácil que a questão 22.

9

Ena Smith
Aula 02

IER, ou o MORE, a palavra muda completamente, veja abaixo.

The weather here is good. It is better than in Japan.

O clima aqui é bom. É melhor que no Japão.

What is the significance of human society’s going from bad to worse?

California is far from here. It is farther/further than New York.

A Califórnia fica longe daqui.

Further information is supplied during this meeting.

more antes do adjetivo, veja os exemplos abaixo:

That ring is more expensive than this book.

The sofa is more comfortable than the chair.

The question 22 is more difficult than the question 23.

1.3. 4. Grau Superlativo: Superioridade e Inferioridade

Some people believe that white teeth are the “prettiest and healthiest ones”.

He is a slow and quiet person. He walks slowly and speaks quietly.

Ele é uma pessoa lenta e calma. Ele anda lentamente e fala calmamente.

They had previously studied abroad.

Eles tinham anteriormente/previamente estudado no exterior.

When? (Quando?) e Where? (Onde?):

My mom cleans the room carefully. (How does my mom clean the room? ~ carefully)
Minha mãe limpa o quarto cuidadosamente. (Como minha mãe limpa o quarto? ~
cuidadosamente)

resposta à pergunta How? (Quão?):

My mom is extremely careful in cleaning the room. (How careful is my mom in cleaning the
room? ~ extremely). – modificou o adjetivo careful.
Minha mãe é extremamente cuidadosa na limpeza do quarto. (Quão cuidadosa é minha mãe na

SUFIXOS

No exemplo abaixo temos o Past
Continuous (Passado Contínuo).

She is tired because she was walking very fast.

4.1.2. No Gerúndio:

She is tired of walking.

25

www.estrategiaconcursos.com.br
Ena Smith
Aula 02

She avoids walking too fast.

Ela evita andar muito rápido.

She stopped walking when she got tired.

Walking in the morning is a nice exercise.

Caminhar de manhã é um bom exercício.

She was a hard-working woman.

Ela era uma mulher trabalhadora.

This is a very time-consuming task.

Confira
alguns usos desse sufixo no quadro abaixo:

careless - descuidado painless - indolor

faultless – sem falta, impecável seamless – sem interrupção, continuamente

harmless – inofensivo doubtless – indubitável

homeless – sem casa, sem-teto meaningless – sem sentido, sem significado,

insignificante

hopeless – sem esperança useless – inútil

measureless – incomensurável, imensurável, sem boundless – sem limites, ilimitado, infinito

limites

4.3. O Sufixo NESS

Observe alguns exemplos no quadro
abaixo:

Questions To Ask Before Using YouTube As A Communications Tool

As communications professionals, it’s very easy to get caught up in the hype and
excitement about all the new online communications tactics we have available to us today. 4
YouTube is a great example. It’s tempting to view tools like this as a silver bullet for our
communications woes. YouTube used to be primarily a great source for videos of music and kids
hurting themselves on skateboards. No longer. It’s becoming a more common tool for corporate
communications.

Your management may want to rush out, jump into the deep end and start using YouTube
to communicate directly with people. If you can, you should get them to pause and consider
several questions first:

• What are your objectives?

• Who’s your target audience?

• Are you looking for sustained interest?

• How will you measure success?

• Do you have a good visual for video?

• How will you handle comments?

• Will you allow ratings?

• Will you let people embed the video?

This is a basic list of fundamental questions you should answer before you launch into using
videos on YouTube (or another video site) as a communications tactic. This is just a start, and
some of these questions should already be part of your communications planning process.

(A) wanton.

perversa

Observe algumas das perguntas que são feitas:

What are your objectives?

Quais são seus objetivos?

Who’s your target audience?

O autor incentiva o leitor a pensar. O autor

(D) weary. - cansado.

weary = cansado, esgotado, exaustivo, fatigado, enfadonho, maçante, penoso

It’s tempting to view tools like this as a silver bullet for our communications woes.

Portanto a nossa opção correta é a letra C) offer solutions= oferecer soluções.

significados diferentes. Vamos então analisar as opções uma a uma:

Observe que a frase citada no enunciado, “It’s temptating see tools like this” = “É tentador ver
Portanto
esta é a opção correta.

(B) The new computer tool did not come out like he had planned.

(C) I hope you soon find out about media professionals likes.

(D) Media professionals can get something like US$ 2,000.00.

por isso, a opção está incorreta.

(E) There is nothing I like about media and correlated studies. - Não tem nada que eu goste
sobre mídia e estudos correlacionados.

Nessa opção o like é verbo. Primeira pessoa do singular, no tempo verbal Presente simples.
incorreta.

TEXTO 2
Analista de Apoio - Turismólogo – CODEMIG – FGV

Sustainable mining – oxymoron or a way of the future?

Mining is an activity that has persisted since the start of humans using tools. However, one might
argue that digging a big hole in the ground and selling the finite resources that come out of that
hole is not sustainable, especially when the digging involves the use of other finite resources (i.e.
fuels) and produces a lot of greenhouse gases.

The counter argument could go along the lines that minerals are not being lost or destroyed
through mining and mineral processing – the elements are being shifted around, and converted
into new forms. Metals can even be extracted from waste, seawater or even sewage, and
recycled. But a more simple argument is possible: a mine can be sustainable if it is economically,

38

Ena Smith
Aula 02

socially and environmentally beneficial in the short and long term. To be sustainable, the positive
benefits of mining should outweigh any negative impacts. [...]

Social positives are often associated with mines in regional areas, such as providing better
amenities in a nearby town, or providing employment (an economic and social positive). Social
negatives can also occur, such as dust, noise, traffic and visual amenity. These are commonly
debated and, whilst sometimes controversial, can be managed with sufficient corporate
commitment, stakeholder engagement, and enough time to work through the issues. Time is the
key parameter - it may take several years for a respectful process of community input, but as
long as it is possible for social negatives to be outweighed by social positives, then the project
will be socially sustainable.

It is most likely that a mine development will have some environmental negatives, such as direct
impacts on flora and fauna through clearing of vegetation and habitat within the mine footprint.
Some mines will have impacts which extend beyond the mine site, such as disruption to
groundwater, production of silt and disposal of waste. Certainly these impacts will need to be
managed throughout the mine life, along with robust rehabilitation and closure planning. [...]

The real turning point will come when mining companies go beyond environmental compliance
to create ‘heritage projects’ that can enhance the environmental or social benefits in a
substantial way – by more than the environmental offsets needed just to make up for the
negatives created by the mine. In order to foster these innovative mining heritage projects we
need to promote ‘sustainability assessments’ - not just ‘environmental assessments’. This will lead
to a more mature appreciation of the whole system whereby the economic and social factors, as
well as environmental factors, are considered in a holistic manner.

I - It is well - known that the resources extracted from mines are endless.

However, one might argue that digging a big hole in the ground and selling the finite resources
that come out of that hole is not sustainable, especially when the digging involves the use of
other finite resources (i.e. fuels) and produces a lot of greenhouse gases.

Errada.

Time is the key parameter - it may take several years for a respectful process of community input,
but as long as it is possible for social negatives to be outweighed by social positives, then the
project will be socially sustainable.

Correta.

III - Sustainable assessment has a wider field of action than environmental assessment.

In order to foster these innovative mining heritage projects we need to promote ‘sustainability
assessments’ - not just ‘environmental assessments’. This will lead to a more mature appreciation
of the whole system whereby the economic and social factors, as well as environmental factors,
are considered in a holistic manner.
Isto levará a

Correta.

IV - There is agreement that negative impacts of mining are restricted to the site.

Some mines will have impacts, which extend beyond the mine site, such as disruption to
groundwater, production of silt and disposal of waste.

Aula 02

socially and environmentally beneficial in the short and long term. To be sustainable, the positive
benefits of mining should outweigh any negative impacts. [...]

no curto e longo prazo.
impactos negativos.

(adapted from https://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/western - australia division/sustainable –
mining – oxymoron – or – way - future. Retrieved on August 10, 2015)

shovel it. Every time the tug needed to reverse direction, the engine had to be stopped and re-
started, by which point the boat might well have run aground.
Modern tugs are very different beasts. They can have ten thousand horsepower and carry a
hundred thousand gallons of fuel. Their propulsion systems have evolved from coal to diesel,
from paddle wheel to propeller. Now they may go five thousand miles without changing course.
Then, when things finally get interesting - when land heaves into view and headlands rise, when
currents intersect and wind barrel down from surrounding slopes, when a narrow channel must
be negotiated
25 under bridges, between breakwaters, and into a crowded port - the tug captain assumes
control.
The shipping industry has gone on a construction spree lately, building ships more than a
thousand feet long with as much cargo space 30 as eleven thousand trucks. It means that fewer
but more powerful tugs are required to tow the same amount of cargo, and shipping schedules
have accelerated dramatically. Tugs that could once afford to 35 lie at port for a week or two
now have turn-arounds of less than twenty-four hours. It is a new era for tugboats!

Dynastic = relativo a dinastia, uma sequência de regras da mesma família = is passed over from

Opção B: is easily set up = é facilmente estabelecido e C: is easily closed down = é facilmente

encerrado e Opção D: takes little effort to establish = necessita de pouco esforço para ser
estabelecido

The early tugs were expensive to staff and almost comically difficult to steer. A twelve-hundred-
horsepower boat might burn twenty tons of coal in a day and require ten men to shovel it.

Every time the tug needed to reverse direction, the engine had to be stopped and re-started, by
which point the boat might well have run aground.

Modern tugs are very different beasts. They can have ten thousand horsepower and carry a
hundred thousand gallons of fuel. Their propulsion systems have evolved from coal to diesel,
from paddle wheel to propeller. Now they may go five thousand miles without changing course.

The Challenges Facing Government Auditors

Friday, 26 July, 2013

Written by Joe Crampton

When it comes to the pressure of successfully identifying, anticipating and dealing with
risks, few auditors shoulder as much burden as those who work with the government. As the
Institute of Internal Auditors' Richard Chambers wrote in his recent blog, these professionals deal
with career-threatening political risks on a daily basis that many private sector auditors could
never comprehend.
Internal auditors play a pivotal role in the relationship between the government and
citizens. It's up to auditors to set the appropriate controls to manage federal programs and also
to provide insight into the effectiveness and the soundness of the government's inner workings.
Put simply, auditors are key to ensuring the public's trust in their government is well founded and
not abused.

When we think about people who have law degrees, we envision lawyers arguing cases in
courtrooms full of drama and publicity, grilling witnesses and arguing with the judge. In reality,
most lawyers, or attorneys, rarely see the inside of a courtroom, and those that do are typically
involved in more common court proceedings such as DWI (driving while intoxicated and theft
cases. For every hour spent in the courtroom, many more are spent doing research, conducting
interviews, or writing documents in preparation for litigation. Being an attorney requires
excellent communication skills, but it also involves a great deal of paperwork and red tape. Some
people with a law degree don’t practice law at all. A law degree opens many doors in the legal
field.

What Do Lawyers Do?

Most often people with a law degree pursue careers as lawyers. A lawyer, also called an attorney,
has extensive training to help them understand and interpret the laws of countries, states, and

municipalities. Their primary role is to provide guidance to others in regards to what is lawful and
what the punishment should be if someone breaks the law.

A criminal lawyer works with the court system, either as a prosecutor who pursues charges
against people and organizations accused of breaking the law, or as a defense attorney who
helps those accused represent themselves in the legal process. But there are many other areas in
which lawyers can specialize.

Read text I and answer questions 31 to 33.

Questions To Ask Before Using YouTube As A Communications Tool

As communications professionals, it’s very easy to get caught up in the hype and
excitement about all the new online communications tactics we have available to us today.

This is a basic list of fundamental questions you should answer before you launch into
using videos on YouTube (or another video site) as a communications tactic. This is just a start,
and some of these questions should already be part of your communications planning process.

Texto 2: Analista de Apoio - Turismólogo – CODEMIG – FGV

Sustainable mining – oxymoron or a way of the future?

Mining is an activity that has persisted since the start of humans using tools. However, one might
argue that digging a big hole in the ground and selling the finite resources that come out of that
hole is not sustainable, especially when the digging involves the use of other finite resources (i.e.
fuels) and produces a lot of greenhouse gases.

The counter argument could go along the lines that minerals are not being lost or destroyed
through mining and mineral processing – the elements are being shifted around, and converted
into new forms. Metals can even be extracted from waste, seawater or even sewage, and
recycled. But a more simple argument is possible: a mine can be sustainable if it is economically,
socially and environmentally beneficial in the short and long term.

Texto 3: Cargos Diversos de Nível Superior – CODESP-SP - FGV

Towing ships is a dynastic business, hard to establish and harder still to give up. It's built
on deep allegiance and cutthroat margins, and its inner workings are full of intrigue and
successionary drama: fistfights, lawsuits, power struggles, and disinheritances.
The early tugs were expensive to staff and almost comically difficult to steer. A twelve-
hundred-horsepower boat might burn twenty 10 tons of coal in a day and require ten men to

Technology: A Blessing or a Curse During the Audit?

The pace of technology change continues to move at what seems to be nearly the speed
of light and shows no real signs of slowing down. What is considered a new technology today is
old technology tomorrow. In contrast to the speed of change in technology, consider the speed
of change in the audit world. Unfortunately, audit processes and approaches have not changed
in what seems to be light years.
Many firms jumped on the technology bandwagon over the past several years but
frequently question their return on investment through enhanced efficiency and improved audit
effectiveness. Bill Gates is quoted at stating, “The first rule of any technology used in a business
is that automation applied to an efficient operation will magnify the efficiency. The second is that

automation applied to an inefficient operation will magnify the inefficiency.” Unfortunately, many
firms unknowingly followed Mr. Gates’ second rule and have applied technology to inefficient
processes. The end result has been minimal improvement in efficiency and effectiveness, at best.
While many firms wanted their technology investment to be a blessing, it just hasn’t turned out
that way. The good news is that it is not too late. You can turn the tide and have technology
utilization become a tremendous asset in audit process.

The Challenges Facing Government Auditors

Put simply, auditors are key to ensuring the public's trust in their government is well-founded
and not abused.

24 The title of Text 2 implies that government auditors may:

(A) work on quite easy tasks.

(B) not take unnecessary risks.
(C) meet some difficult issues.
(D) trust their political leaders.
(E) have to change their career.

25 Read the statements below and mark them as true (T) or false (F):

( ) Government auditors work less than other auditors.

( ) The work of government auditors is more demanding.
( ) Private sector auditors feel as much pressure as other auditors.
