About The Open University in Scotland

The Open University in Scotland was voted the top university in Scotland for student satisfaction for the fifth year running in the National Student Survey 2010, with an overall rating of 93%. The OU has an open admissions policy: no qualifications are required to study at degree level. Around a quarter of students join us without standard university entrance level qualifications. More people in Scotland choose flexible study with the OU than with any other university. Four in ten of all part-time undergraduate students in Scotland are OU students. A recent economic impact assessment showed that for every 1 of public funding received, the OU generates 5 for the Scottish economy.

The OU has one of Scotlands most successful track records in increasing progression from college to degree study. OU students live in every postal district in Scotland. The highest participation rate is in Shetland. More than half of OU in Scotland students receive help with the cost of studying, either from their employer, or because they are eligible for a fee waiver, or an Individual Learning Account (ILA). Our cumulative PhD students across all OU faculties between 20052010 is 141 with a further 160 validated by OU in associate research centres across Scotland. With around 260,000 students enrolled, including more than 18,000 students studying overseas, The Open University is the largest academic institution in the UK, and qualifies as one of the world's largest universities.
