Lake-Lehman HS graduates 157

One hundred and fifty-seven Lake-Lehman graduates reached a milestone together on June 10, focusing on the uniqueness of the 2011 class and what the future may have in store for them. Hundreds of parents, family members and friends crowded the football stadium on the clear, warm night, chatting jovially in anticipation of the black-andgold-clad students to entering the field. Class President Joshua Ford kept his message short - after all, he said, quoting Shakespeare, brevity is the soul of wit. Ford didnt spend much time reminiscing - he wanted to impart his fellow classmates with a bit of wisdom that goes beyond the classroom. We possess all of the knowledge in the world, but must choose to reveal it to ourselves, he said. Ford couldnt help but sprinkle his final address to his class with a bit of humor. He told the graduates not to take life too seriously, and make sure they understand the rules of life before trying to change them. P.S. - its a lot like Monopoly, he said. Student Council President and Leadership Award winner Erin Hohol reflected on her high school experience with her classmates - she told them she wouldnt make her speech intellectual or offer advice for the future. Its very difficult to take 13 years of thoughts and emotion and wrap them into a short and concise body of words. I did my best, she said. Hohol said her class is memorable in itself because of its uniqueness, and many of the students have known each other since they were 5 or 6 years old. While she acknowledges some of the actions of members of the Class of 2011 made administration cringe, she was grateful for the fun memories the grads shared. It was definitely one of the only classes in the world to be reprimanded for meowing during the class picture, she said,

CELEBRATING FATHERHOOD

Proud parents lined the pews like paparazzi during the Gate of Heaven kindergarten graduation ceremony on June 9. Twenty-eight graduates did what Principal Abraham Simon asked of them pray, sing and smile during the ceremony, the last of which Gate of Heaven Church will ever host. The 60-year-old school closed this week. It is one of four schools in two counties the Diocese of Scranton closed this year due to financial constraints. Many parents were teetering between two states of emotion during the graduation. Its both a happy day and a sad day, said Marybeth Fino, of Harding. Were celebrating the last (kindergarten graduation) at Gate of Heaven. Fino has two children, Mia and Michael, in the graduating class, and her oldest daughter is a second-grader at the school. I attended Catholic school and my husband attended private school, she said. Academics are important, but we are also concerned with building the person. Fino said Gate of Heavens strong family values led her to enroll her children there, and they will continue their Catholic education at Good Shepherd Academy in Kingston this fall.

Michael said hell miss his friends most, including his best friend, Eddie Maier. But they wont just miss each other in the summer period between school years. Im going to Dallas, said Maier. Maiers mother, Alexis, of Dallas, said shes disappointed to break with the long-running tradition of Catholic education in her family, but shes proud her son was able to attend Gate of Heaven. I just think the ... values they learn here give them a little extra in life, she said. Students recited Bible verses and sang songs during the ceremony, including one titled First Grade, First Grade, to the tune of Frank Sinatras New York, New York. Afterwards, families continued the celebration in the school gym with cake and refreshments. Chris Antall, of Dallas, said his son James is a kindergarten graduate whos unsure of where he will attend first grade.

Don Austin, of Trucksville, and his 8 year-old son Brendon, share baseball almost every day of the week and, here, they share pizza and a hot dog after a recent ball game. Brendon plays second base for the Back Mountain Athletics and Don is the coach. Fathers Day, a celebration honoring fathers and celebrating fatherhood, paternal bonds and the influence of fathers in society, is noted today. It is celebrated on the third Sunday of June in many countries and on other days elsewhere.

DALLAS BOROUGH

Council will look into police regionalization study

By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

Council unanimously approved a motion Wednesday night to look further into a proposed police regionalization study in the Back Mountain. The issue was brought up at last months Back Mountain Community Partnership meeting. Vice Chairman John Wilkes Jr. announced the Governors Office of Local Government Services is offering a grant for the completion of the study, and members agreed to discuss the idea with their individ-

ual boards before making a decision on the matter. Similar studies have been conducted in the past in the area to no avail. Borough Manager Tracey Carr said council would like to know more about the study before opting to participate. She said there can be many different ways to study police departments, including contracted services, sharing services and regionalization. The approved motion also stated council would like to inquire the specific scope of the study, sponsorship of the study, employee time commitment and municipal

data collection responsibility. We want to know what its going to be about and who else is going to participate, said Carr. Council also voted to extend its grant contract with the Commonwealth Financing Authority Local Share Account for one year in relation to Phase I of the downtown

master plan. The borough received about $1.3 million through the local gaming share from money generated at Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs for the project last year. The state Department of Transportation has also been continuously studying the roundabout ar-

ea in Dallas and is planning for major changes within the borough to increase traffic flow and make the downtown area more pedestrianfriendly. Carr said some of the work planned by PennDOT will interfere with the master plan project, and council approved an extension to ensure cooperation between both projects. Plans for PennDOTs project have not yet been finalized, and Carr said the borough does not want to start work that may be affected by that project. In other news, council Authorized the following do-

nations, as per the 2011 budget: $500 for the S.P.C.A., $2,500 for the Back Mountain Memorial Library and $6,000 for Dallas Fire and Ambulance. Approved a three-year, 3 percent amortization schedule for quarterly general fund payments into the police pension plan to begin on July1in accordance with recent arbitration award settlement agreement. Eliminated the borough crossing guard position held by Patricia Paci and reduced hours for crossing guard Don Egliskis in accordance with the closing of Gate of Heaven School.

ONE FINAL VISIT

By SARAH HITE shite@mydallaspost.com

As Andy Sholtis and his wife, Joan, looked at photographs on the Memories Table at the final Gate of Heaven Open House on June 5, the pair reflected on decades of tradition at the Catholic school that closed this summer. Andy, of Shavertown, was a member of the first first-grade class at the elementary school in 1951, and his granddaughter was a member of the last prekindergarten class 60 years later. When I first came here, it was all priests and nuns teaching, said Andy. You were coming out with a good Catholic education. Now, its all lay people and youre still getting a good Catholic education. Joan said, while she didnt attend the Catholic school during

her younger years, she often volunteered at Gate of Heaven when her daughter attended the school. Im just going to cry, she said. I spent a lot of time here. Matt Dewees, of Dallas, said he and other members of the Gate of Heaven Parent-Teacher Group organized the Open House to give current and former students, employees and the community one last time to tour the school and see old friends during its Diamond Jubilee, or 60th anniversary. HARPIN ON THINGS

Saying good-bye to someone you love is the hardest thing to do

As I write this column, there are two cats sitting on the couch next to me and another in the window looking at the birds at the feeder. They must know, as pets seem to, that I need the company during this difficult time HEFFERNAN of life. The closest one is purring up a storm, as loud as a 327 small block Chevy at idle. Its a comforting sound. The last few weeks have been full of reflection since the passing of my mother Allie on June 4 at her farm in Lehman. The family was able to spend time with her and everyone had their own conversations and their private time. I was fortunate enough to have been back home the last few years and spend that extra time, those special moments, with Mom but then I have always been fortunate when it comes to things in my life. I cant remember who told me you get what you need, not what you want when I became a friend of Bill W. years ago, but they were right. I needed to be home, to go through difficult times yet be close to mom when she needed it most. The people who knew Mother know how she was but for those who didnt know her well, here are several words to describe her. She was competitive, as an athlete at Wyoming Seminary, in her horse riding, in studying to become a paramedic and EMT and in her bridge playing around the Valley. You didnt want to get into a game of Gin Rummy for dimes with her. She was generous, in giving her time to the family, in helping people she knew and even those she didnt know, in thinking about other people first and in her 30-plus years of volunteer work with the Lehman Fire Company and the ambulance association. To explain how much she cared about other people, heres a story for you. We were talking while she was lying in bed before the afternoon nurse came to the farm one day. Mom was upset because she was unable to attend the memorial service for Rusty Flack. Her hands were swollen from needles and she couldnt write and the glasses she was wearing were an old prescription because the dog had eaten her new pair. She asked me to be sure to let the Flack family members know she was thinking about them and that she was sorry for their loss. She was strict in her house rules and manners. While we were growing up in Druid Hills, she used an air horn to give us five minutes to get home for dinner. It could be heard all the way to the old ACME in Shavertown. You learned not to put your elbow on the table during dinner so as to not have it jabbed with a fork. There was no talking back. Mom had a left hook that would have made Sugar Ray proud. I learned quickly not to back sass her for the same thing twice. Back then there was no wait til your father gets home. The punishment started with her. She was loving, as all mothers are, caring for and guarding her family to the best of her ability. And she was passionate, in her desire to become the best at whatever endeavor she undertook. Anyone who knew Mom will remember her laughter because, when she really got rolling, she would snort, get embarrassed and then do it all again. It was contagious. As it turned out, one of her nurses was a young lady whose life Mom had saved 20 years ago while volunteering on the ambulance. the nurse never had the opportunity to thank Mom but was able to do so that night. I will never know just how many lives Mom touched. But I do know she will be missed by all. Harp Heffernan was the associate publisher, outdoor editor and chief photographer of the Sunday Independent, a newspaper that was in his family for 87 years in Wilkes-Barre. Back Mountain Bloomers, a community-based horticulture group, is making sure the Shakespearean garden next to Insalaco Hall on Misericordia Universitys campus is blooming with perfection. The Bloomers are, according to their website, committed to increasing enthusiasm for and knowledge of horticulture and gardening, and the conservation of natural resources. The group got involved with gardening on campus about six years ago, says Barbara Soyka, a member of the committee that oversees that Elizabethan-esque garden. The Bloomers will hold their annual Tour of Back Mountain Gardens on Saturday, July 2. The committee overseeing the garden is comprised of people with different skills and interests yet the common denominator is their love for the women to whom the garden is devoted and its roots reach much deeper than dirt. The garden is the first of its kind in this area and was created in honor of Sister Regina Kelly who taught English at Misericordia before becoming Academic Dean of the university. Sr. Kelly was extremely dedicated to teaching and the numerous students who entered her life and her classrooms, Soyka explains. After her death, Agnes Cardoni, a Misericordia graduate and friend of Regina, suggested a Shakespeare garden that could be a living memorial to her and provide a teaching setting and a place of beauty and contemplation for

the entire community, Soyka said. Many of the 178 flowers mentioned in various plays, stories and poems that Shakespeare wrote appear in the garden. Soyka researched Shakespeares writing to unearth the types of plants mentioned. I looked in various plays. Some plays are famous for their references like A Midsummers Night Dream and A Winters Tale, she explained. Soyka, who has taught English during her entire professional career, said that Shakespeare used flowers, shrubs and trees symbolically and metaphorically. They all have a literary subtext, she said. A rose by any (other name) would smell as sweet, thats Romeo and Juliet. They were closer to nature in Shakespeares time. Everyone had a garden. They were very close to the whole process from the seed to the kitchen.

ROSS TOWNSHIP

Employees must pass physical every two years

Supervisors passed a resolution on Tuesday night which will require employees to pass a physical every two years. The resolution was designed to fill a loophole in the Pennsylvania vehicle code, which exempts local governments from requiring a physical exam every two years to maintain a Commercial Drivers License, or CDL. We have seen issues develop at other places, said Stan Davis, supervisor chairman. It makes sense to do it. It protects us and our employees. The resolution upholds the required two-year exam for all employees employed as fulltime equipment operators. It states any expense from the exam, which exceeds what is covered by the townships employee health insurance, will be reimbursed to the employee after receipts and verification of the physical are presented to township officials. Also, the resolution requires full-time equipment operators on sick leave of six days or more or hospitalized to provide documentation from their doctor to the township roadmaster, stating the date they are released to return to work and if any limitations are needed. - Eileen Godin

The Road back...to the The Back Mountain

R.D. Clements Dentistry in Dallas is pleased to welcome Dr. Duane R. Sprau as the new associate to their staff. When Duane Sprau was 5 years old living on Church Street in Dallas, his family switched dentists and became patients of Dr. Bob Clements. He remembers that after that switch, his family thought going to the dentist was actually fun. A soccer player for Dallas High School with a proclivity for the sciences , Duane went off to Penn State Main Campus. But instead of studying the sciences, he went on to study finance. As it turned out, the sciences were really his love. After receiving a B.S in Finance, he re-enrolled at Penn State to fulfill science credits needed for dental school. In May of 2010, Duane obtained his Doctorate in Dental Medicine at the Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry. And now hes back. Back to his home, The Back Mountain, and back practicing where going to the dentist is actually fun. WELCOME DR. DUANE R. SPRAU!

The May exhibit at the Back Mountain Memorial Librarys Art Display Wall was a collection of hard ground etchings, aqua tints and lino relief prints created by Herbert Simon, of Shavertown. Simon, a retired Professor of Sculpture and 3 Dimensional Design at Wilkes University, has been doing his etchings since 2003 when he enrolled in a print-making course at Wilkes University. He began concentrating on Intaglio (a specific form of printmaking) and has continued to enjoy this fascinating form of art. MOMENTS IN TIME
The History Channel On June 30, 1859, Jean-Francois Gravelet, a Frenchman known professionally as Emile Blondin, becomes the first daredevil to walk across Niagara Falls on a tightrope. She produced nine more books on food, including How to Cook a Wolf (1942) and The Gastronomic Me (1943). On July 1, 1951, Cleveland Indians ace Bob Feller pitches the third no-hit game of his career to lead the Indians over the Detroit Tigers 2-1. This made him the first modern pitcher ever to throw three nohitters.

STRANGE BUT TRUE

By Samantha Weaver It was philosopher, historian, mathematician and Nobel Prize winner Bertrand Russell who made the following sage observation: In all affairs its a healthy thing now and then to hang a question mark on the things you have long taken for granted. The giant Pacific octopus, the largest octopus in the world, is a prolific breeder. Extremely prolific. The female lays approximately 56,000 eggs, all at once. And since, according to experts, the population is stable, of those 56,000 eggs, only two survive to reproduce. It was Franklin Pierce, the 14th president of the United States, who ordered the White Houses first bathtub in the 1850s. Harry Houdini is best known as a magician and an escape artist, but he also performed amazing stunts. In the early days of aviation, he flew in an airplane to an altitude of 3,000 feet, then jumped off the plane onto another one - while wearing handcuffs. A recent study conducted by researchers at a university in Sweden found that if a person has to commute longer than 45 minutes to work, he or she is 40 percent more likely to get divorced. There are more languages and dialects spoken in India than in any other country in the world: in excess of 1,600 at last count.

The Dallas School District may have to face an unpleasant choice between charging restaurant-type prices for its cafeteria lunches or closing down its food service, according to Patricia Gregory, school board member who serves on the cafeteria committee. The problem the district has to deal with, she explained, is the anticipated sharp decline in federal lunch subsidies. We could have to raise the prices quite a bit, said Gregory. She agreed that other local districts estimate of a new lunch price of $1.25 was a possibility for Dallas. Gate of Heaven School held its 3rd Annual Academic and Ath-

Before she found the Holistic Moms Network, Clancy Harrison said most of her friends would roll their eyes if she even mentioned cloth diapering or chemical-free cleaning products. Harrison, of Dallas, and her two children, 2-year-old Dylan and newborn Cash, now have an arsenal of support from likeminded moms and tots based throughout the Wyoming Valley. The Holistic Moms Networks Wyoming Valley chapter got its start about a year ago by Kim Murphy, who has since moved from the area, because she was looking to find women with similar interests when it come to homeopathic child rearing. Leeanne Hardy, of Huntington Mills, is now one of the head organizers of the group. It wasnt until she became a mother to 3-year-old Marin and 1year-old Autumn that her female instincts to choose more natural approaches to child care kicked in. I had an out-of-hospital birth, she said. While my family was nervous about it, I went off and did what felt right to me. The mothers and some fathers meet up every third Thursday of the month at Wyoming Seminary Lower School in Kingston to discuss practices related to holistic living. The key to understanding what the group is about is realizing everyone has a different definition of holistic, and the network boasts a welcoming, non-judgmental atmosphere to accommodate others beliefs. I think holistic health is about trying to balance all parts of oneself physical, emotional, spiritual, mental, said Hardy. Its about making decisions with my kids and creating a more respectful relationship with my kids. Not all group members are parents, though. The network has monthly topical meetings, and anyone can attend to learn more about a certain subject. While there is a $45 tax-deductible fee to join the non-profit group, first-timers dont need to pay. ampton St., Edwardsville, PA 18704. She was born September 19, 1935, in Kingston, graduated from the former Laketon High School, Harveys Lake, class of 1953, and received her bachelor of science and masters degree in education from College Misericordia, Dallas. She taught kindergarten for the Dallas School District for 34 years, retiring in 1991. She was a member of the Loyalville United Methodist Church. Leann Hardy, of Huntington Mills, conducts a class for Holistic Moms at the Wyoming Seminary Lower School.

Im not a mom, but Im going to join the group, said Megan Sgarlat Prynn, of Harveys Lake, a former environmental educator for the city of Philadelphia whos looking to educate her own community about eco-consciousness. I grew up playing outside appreciating nature, she said. I want to learn more about food commercialization and be more aware of what Im eating. Harrison was accompanied by her husband, David, and brother, Matt Cash, at the April 7 meeting. The men were more interesting in the subject at hand, planting an organic garden, than picking up holistic child care techniques. Cash, of Harveys Lake, already uses natural cleaning products, and when the day does come for him to be a dad, he will instill those natural practices into his fathering style. I dont know when that will happen, because Im in graduate school now, he said, smiling.

Clancy Harrison, of Dallas, and her children, Cash and Dylan, attend a lecture on organic gardening during a meeting of Holistic Moms, an informal group of young families, at Wyoming Seminary Lower School.

RE-UNITED CROWNED TOURNAMENT CHAMPION

Dodgeball tourney set for July 17

The Fourth Annual Zachary Shoemaker Dodgeball Tournament will be held at noon on Sunday, July 17 at the National Guard Armory, Main Street, Nanticoke. Proceeds will benefit the Zachary Bryden Shoemaker Foundation. The event will be a doubleelimination style tournament. Refreshments, food, raffle items and face painting will be available. Team registration is underway. Teams consist of eight people with a cost of $10 per person. This year, players are encouraged to rock the hawk and wear Mohawks in Zacharys honor. When Zack and his mother were involved in an automobile accident in 2008 that left him mentally and physically damaged, Zack had a Mohawk of his own. He used to walk around saying, Rock n roll dude! In light of that memory, event coordinator Stef Sikora is encouraging dodgeball players to come wearing Mohawks or fauxhawks. In addition, Pure Lavi Salon will be on-site to cut and style Mohawks and fauxhawks. Since its inception in 2008, the dodgeball tourney event has raised more than $6,300 for the Zachary Bryden Shoemaker Foundation. Last year, a total of 32 teams participated and nearly 30 businesses supported the event. This year, an even larger turnout is expected. The event is open to the public and admission is free. Music will be provided by DJ Scott Stevens. For more information, contact Stef Sikora at 574-5945.

The team finished the day strong with a 5-0 shutout of Dover NJs Freedom. From left, first row, are Morgan Migs Mancini and Morgan Kazi Maharty. Second row, Kasey KB Barry, Morgan Squirrel Kile, Emily Sutton, Emily Orrson, Autumn Atkinson and Maury Cro Cronauer. to come back, said Dewees, a Gate of Heaven parent. About 200 attendees enjoyed a picnic-style lunch during the event and viewed old photographs and memorabilia from the school. Local Boy Scout troops associated with Gate of Heaven will use the collected photographs to make a commemorative DVD this summer, according to Cub Scout Pack 232 coordinator Amy Huntington. Many of those who attended the Open House just wanted an opportunity to meet with fellow former Gators and reminisce on the schools history. Carol Carroll, of Dallas, was a kindergarten aide at the school for nine years while her sons attended the elementary school until 1998. I even had withdrawal then, she said. Its sad (that the school is closing). She said the school was a tight-knit kinship, and its that feeling she will miss the most. Its a place where people who never knew each other before became family, Carroll said. Barbara Ann Evans, of Dallas, is a 1964 graduate of the school which she credits with instilling her with confidence. It gave me the I can do what I think I want to do, she said of the schools lasting impression. Parents of current students wandered the halls during the Open House, led by their little ones to see art projects and science displays. A sign posted on a wall in one hallway summed up the events message: Thanks for the memories. Gator parent John Hornle, of Dallas, wanted to say thank you back. Im here to say good-bye to the good people Ive met over the years, he said.
