DIRECTORS LETTER
Dear Friends, Its celebration time! The hard work and dedication of our elected officials, staff and residents has brought us to this exciting time in Kettering. We will be celebrating the grand openings of four neighborhood parks in May along with Adventure Reef, the Kettering Recreation Complex and Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center in June. Youre invited to join us on June 25, for the grand reopening of the Kettering Recreation Complex and Charles I. Lathrem Senior Center. From noon to 4 p.m. there will be demonstrations, tours and entertainment for the entire family. We are excited to show off the many improvements that have been made to the facility including a new 8,000 square foot fitness wing, renovated lobby, improved entrances, redesigned locker rooms, additional group fitness rooms and the permanent retractable pool roof. We hope to see you there. The celebration continues with the Year of Arts & Entertainment in Kettering showcasing our two prized art facilities Rosewood Arts Centre and Fraze Pavilion. Make plans to join us at the Community Block Party on May 25, for the Plein-Air Paint Out where artists will be creating works of art right before your very eyes. Additionally, Fraze has an all-star lineup featuring acts such as the Beach Boys, K. D. Lang, Earth, Wind & Fire and the Steve Miller Band. Also, dont miss our amazing festival lineup including Blues Fest, the new Kickin Chicken Wing Fest, Swamp Romp and Festival of the Vine. Plus, learn more about the history of Fraze by reading the special history walk banners throughout the park. Dont forget there are many (almost too many to mention!) free and low cost recreational opportunities for the entire family. See inside back cover for a calendar of fun, affordable events. Tell us how youre spending your summer in our parks and facilities via one of our three Facebook pages. Just search for the Kettering Recreation Complex, Rosewood Arts Centre and Fraze Pavilion. Wed love to see your pictures and hear your stories that could inspire others to join in the fun! All of this would not be possible without the continued support of our residents and elected officials. We sincerely thank you for supporting parks, recreation and cultural arts in this community. Have an enjoyable, active and safe summer. All the best,

The program provides a resource for teachers to take their students into the field for hands-on science. The program, in its eighth year, is a cooperative effort between the Kettering City School District and the City of Kettering Parks, Recreation, and Cultural Arts Department. The many habitats of Pondview Park and Southdale Park provide opportunities for students to participate in curriculum based nature activities such as dipping for tadpoles and identifying birds on the prairie. Teachers can coordinate Land Lab visits through the Environmental Education Coordinator. For more information or to volunteer, call 296-2486.

The mission of this initiative is to establish, implement and sustain a program to promote character building assets in Kettering. Character Words of the Month are promoted in schools, community buildings, churches and businesses. Our goal is to build character qualities and personal assets that will help our youth make positive choices and develop a strong base for a promising future.
Following the 2006 Search Institute survey of more than 700 Kettering youth, Partners for Healthy Youth learned that less than 1/3 of our young people are engaged in service to their communities. The Youth Leadership and Service initiative seeks to engage all young people in Kettering through leadership development programs and service projects. Each year hundreds of youth participate in the Kettering Youth Council, Kettering Youth Leadership Academy, Community Day of Service and various service events.
Mentoring
The mission of the Mentoring initiative is to connect the youth of Kettering and their families to strong resources, healthy adults and programs that provide our youth with mentoring and other positive opportunities which include elements of strong character and leadership development. Mentoring programs include the ongoing after-school programs for our middle schools, continuation of Cops & Kids Camp and positive interaction and relationship building with local law enforcement.

KETTERING BMx
Everyone can participate all you need is a BMx bike and helmet. Races every Sunday, May October 2011 (Registration/sign up at 2 3 p.m. on race day) BMX has something to offer everyone. Races are organized according to age group and skill levels so everyone gets the opportunity to compete on an appropriate, fair level. All riders compete for awards and ABA points. The ABA points system determines a riders annual ranking within his/her own district. National and local standings are then published in The BMXer, a magazine that each rider receives monthly. What is BMX? The sport of bicycle motocross that began in the early 1970s in southern California. A hand full of riders started riding their stingray-type bikes off road in vacant lots and fields. Not much competition, but a lot of fun. Who can race? Races are organized into separate boys and girls classes, age groups from 5-and-under to 51-and-older, and skill levels (example: novice, intermediate and expert). All riders start as novices and work up to more advanced levels by winning races. What kind of bike do I need? BMX racing does not require a lot of expensive equipment. Most racers start with their 20" street bike by removing the chain guard and kick stand and then putting some inexpensive padding on the frame, handle bar and stem. What kind of helmet do I need? A helmet, long sleeve shirts, long pants and enclosed shoes are required. The ABA recommends a helmet with face protection as well. How much does it cost to race? A one-year ABA membership is only $45, which allows you to race on any ABA track nationwide. Each member will also receive The BMXer. Once you have become an ABA member, races, clinics and other competitions will require additional fees based on the event. BMX Summer Camp: This three-day camp will take place June 14 - 16 (10 a.m. - 2 p.m.) and will be taught by local BMX rider, Josh Smith and the Kettering BMX association. Fees are $55 for Kettering residents and $65 for non-residents. Registration is possible on-line (www.ketteringoh.org) or at the Kettering Recreation Complex. Bike and helmets are required.

Aikidoists avoid direct confrontation by blending with an attackers energy to defend against grabbing, striking and choking attacks. The power of effective aikido comes from centering, relaxing and extending ki energy and awareness rather than physical size and strength. The practice of aikido brings enhanced balance, coordination, energy, flexibility and spatial and environmental awareness, as well as develops ones ability to relax and remain calm in mind and body during stressful situations. 311035-A 311035-B 311035-C T/Th T/Th T/Th 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. June 2 - 30 July 5 - 28 Aug. 2 - 30
