Youth Camp on Biblical Leadership Principles – Camp Gunnison, CO – December 18-22, 2010

Session 1 – Mel Privette – “Jesus Christ- The Greatest Leader of All Time”

We have the desire to frow and develop our biblical leadership skills based on proper and Godly standards
Jesus Christ was the greatest leader of all time because he was…
1. Meek
a. Meekness is humility of mind, a desire to learn, receptiveness, coach-ability
b. Matthew 11:29 – Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall
find rest unto your souls.
i. Jesus Christ was willing to learn and desired to grow
ii. Jesus Christ was receptive to God and His Word
c. John 4:34 – Jesus saith unto them, My meat is to do the will of him that sent me, and to finish his work.
i. Jesus Christ was focused on what God asked him to do
ii. He was coachable so God could work in him
1. Coachable: be willing to do what is asked
d. James 1:21 – Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness
the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.
i. Engrafted: the Word is totally implanted beyond the surface of out thoughts - absorb it
ii. Save your souls – whole in every category (heart, mind, etc)
iii. Go to God and the Word first, get peaceful
iv. Make the word personal to you – it will meet your needs
e. Psalm 25:9 – The meek will he guide in judgment: and the meek will he teach his way.
i. God will guide and teach the meek – we want to be meek, humble, receptive, coachable
2. Faithful
a. Faithful means reliable, dependable, loyal and trustworthy
b. John 8:29 – And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things
that please him
i. Jesus Christ developed himself into a leader that God could rely upon
ii. God needs to depend on us for positive results, to rely on
c. Luke 16:10 – He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least
is unjust also in much
i. We advance to greater levels of service by being faithful
ii. Five ways we can be faithful in least:
1. Punctuality – be on time, early is better
2. Communicate – keep people updated and report back
3. Consistent and Well-Organized – decent and in order
4. Begin and end each day in the Word
5. Maintain a powerful prayer life
iii. God will always do His part- we need to be faithful
3. Had a Biblically Mature Perception of Leadership
a. Matthew 20:25-28 – 25But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles
exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them. 26But it shall not be so
among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister; 27And whosoever will be
chief among you, let him be your servant: 28Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to
minister, and to give his life a ransom for many
i. The greater the leader, the greater the servant
b. Luke 22:24-27 –  24And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the
greatest. 25And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that
exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. 26But ye shall not be so: but he that is greatest among
you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve. 27For whether is greater, he that
sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth
i. Jesus Christs motivation to lead came from his desire to serve
ii. In the world, many leaders have a desire to be served but that’s not how it works in the Word
c. Philippians 2:4, 5 – 4Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5Let
this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus
i. Sometimes our desires take a back seat to something that will help someone else grow
ii. Jesus Christ didn’t put his own desires before the needs of others
d. Romans 15:1-3 – 1We then that are strong ought to bear the infirmities of the weak, and not to please
ourselves. 2Let every one of us please his neighbour for his good to edification. 3For even Christ pleased not
himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
i. Walk not to please yourself but to edify, love, strenghten, help others walk bigger for God
ii. Putting others ahead of ourselves is an indication of spiritual maturity
4. Believed What the Word Said About Him
a. John 14:6 – Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but
by me.
i. Understanding of your biblical position will help you lead with confidence
b. Ephesians 2:10 – For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath
before ordained that we should walk in them.
i. We are God’s masterpiece- the best work an artist can produce
ii. A true perception of ourselves must be based on the Word
c. II Corinthians 5:20 – Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we
pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God
i. As ambassadors, we are authorized by God to speak on behalf of Christ
d. Romans 8:37 – Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us
i. We have victory beyond measure
e. John 14:12 – Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and
greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.
i. The word tells us who and what we are
1. We can manifest power
2. We are what the Word says we are
3. We have what the Word says we have
4. We will be what the Word says we will be
Good Preparation:
o When good preparation results in success, it builds confidence
o Confident leaders are more likely to think clearly, act wisely and execute effectively
o Put our whole heart into what we are doing
Growth and Development as Leaders
o We need time in various aspects of life – we can always grow
Ephesians 5:1 – Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children
o Benjamin Franklin – “The man who does things makes many mistakes, but he never makes the biggest mistake of all
doing nothing”
o The biggest mistake of all is doing nothing, everyone makes mistakes so go out there and keep trying
o Leaders in the household do not need to be afraid to make mistakes
o Be meek, go to the Word, and do better next time!
o God allows us the time we need to grow and develop – especially as leaders
o Leaders make the best decision with Gods help

Sharing – Tom Horrocks:

o If you want to lead, you have to travel light.

o There is a tremendous need in the world for your stand so stay in the Word at all times
o God deserves your best every day because He has never done you wrong
o Don’t do things out of obligation, do them out of love

Session 2 – Dorothy Horrocks – “Leading With Love”

o Love can make a huge difference in someone’s life, it is the foundation that everything else is built on
o Leadership is not just a position, it is an attitude of responsibility to better others, to motivate others to improve
o There are two great motivators – love and fear (God motivates us to love Him by loving us)
o I John 4:10, 11 – 10Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the
propitiation for our sins. 11Beloved, if God so loved us, we ought also to love one another.
a. We can love others into loving Him as well
o Romans 5:5 – And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy
Ghost which is given unto us
o I John 2:5 – But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in
him
o Galatians 5:22, 23 – 22But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
23
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law
o 5 Keys You Can Apply to Help You Lead With Love:
1. Love Yourself
i. You cannot fully love others if you don’t love yourself
ii. Matthew 22:36-39 – 36Master, which is the great commandment in the law? 37Jesus said unto him,
Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
38
This is the first and great commandment. 39And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy
neighbour as thyself.
a. How we view ourselves influences how we live our lives, every action we take
b. I must be confident in myself and my longsuits – if I am always concerned, I am distracted,
there will always be areas to grow in
c. We can be confident in the Word and our God-given abilities
d. When you focus on what Word says you are you don’t get caught up in comparing
iii. We all need everyone’s longsuits
2. Expect People to Do God’s Word
i. As leaders, we encourage and challenge others to step out of their comfort zone with love and
patience
ii. Mark 10: 17-22 – 17And when he was gone forth into the way, there came one running, and kneeled
to him, and asked him, Good Master, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? 18And Jesus said
unto him, Why callest thou me good? there is none good but one, that is, God. 19Thou knowest the
commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness,
Defraud not, Honour thy father and mother. 20And he answered and said unto him, Master, all
these have I observed from my youth. 21Then Jesus beholding him loved him, and said unto him,
One thing thou lackest: go thy way, sell whatsoever thou hast, and give to the poor, and thou shalt
have treasure in heaven: and come, take up the cross, and follow me. 22And he was sad at that
saying, and went away grieved: for he had great possessions.
a. Jesus Christ gave him the Word because he loved him and was honest
b. Be patient but don’t break the standard – don’t succumb to the weaknesses of others
3. Keep Your Vision High
i. How we view others influences how you behave towards them and how they act
ii. No one ever becomes great without believing in others – believe that others want to do the Word
iii. Focus on successes, not failures – build upon their success
iv. Philemon 1:21 – Having confidence in thy obedience I wrote unto thee, knowing that thou wilt also
do more than I say
a. He was asking Philemon to do a big thing – Paul had a vision for Philemon to live up to
v. Colossians 1:9, 10 – 9For this cause we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you,
and to desire that ye might be filled with the knowledge of his will in all wisdom and spiritual
understanding; 10That ye might walk worthy of the Lord unto all pleasing, being fruitful in every
good work, and increasing in the knowledge of God
a. Your prayer time for your people is very important
4. Develop the Art of Listening
i. Listen with your whole heart – we have 2 ears and 1 mouth
ii. James 1:19 – Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow
to wrath
a. Listen to fully understand. Do you hear doubt or worry? Are they speaking the Word?
iii. Mark 9:14-23 – 14And when he came to his disciples, he saw a great multitude about them, and the
scribes questioning with them. 15And straightway all the people, when they beheld him, were
greatly amazed, and running to him saluted him. 16And he asked the scribes, What question ye with
them? 17And one of the multitude answered and said, Master, I have brought unto thee my son,
which hath a dumb spirit; 18And wheresoever he taketh him, he teareth him: and he foameth, and
gnasheth with his teeth, and pineth away: and I spake to thy disciples that they should cast him out;
and they could not. 19He answereth him, and saith, O faithless generation, how long shall I be with
you? how long shall I suffer you? bring him unto me. 20And they brought him unto him: and when
he saw him, straightway the spirit tare him; and he fell on the ground, and wallowed foaming. 21And
he asked his father, How long is it ago since this came unto him? And he said, Of a child. 22And
ofttimes it hath cast him into the fire, and into the waters, to destroy him: but if thou canst do any
thing, have compassion on us, and help us. 23Jesus said unto him, If thou canst believe, all things are
possible to him that believeth
a. Listen for the “if”

to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers
a. Speak words that edify one another
b. Build each other up – make people feel good
c. The greatest words are God’s Words
d. Be comforting and encourage people to rise to the Word
ii. II Timothy 2:24 – And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to
teach, patient
a. Be Gentle and Tender – growth occurs in a tender environment
o I Corinthians 13:1-8 –  1Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as
sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal. 2And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all
knowledge; and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. 3And
though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it
profiteth me nothing. 4Charity suffereth long, and is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not
puffed up, 5Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no
evil; 6Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; 7Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things,
endureth all things. 8Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be
tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1. We are not circumstance controlled, we are Word conditioned
2. We all have long suits so there is no place for envy
3. Love without partiality – never show favorites – we are all members of the body of Christ
4. It is not about us, we want God to be magnified
5. You are always setting the example – put God first, then others, then ourselves
6. Do not get exasperated or roused to anger – usually makes things worse – stay in control
7. We can carry any burden because of the love of God – God will handle our burdens
8. The Love of God NEVER fails – it will take you over the top
o Luke 10:38-42 – 38Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman
named Martha received him into her house. 39And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and
heard his word. 40But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not
care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41And Jesus answered and said
unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42But one thing is needful: and Mary
hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her
1. Jesus Christ did not take offence, he lovingly helped her with the Word. He was gentle.
o Love is the activating power for all of God’s gift. He loved us into loving him, We respond by bringing others into
loving him so they can walk for God.

Session 3 – Marybeth Privette – “Let the Word Do the Work”

o God’s Word is the authority – the bible is the only place to find the true standard on how to live right
1. The Word is the instruction manual to life, all the answers are in the Word
o II Timothy 3:16 – All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for
correction, for instruction in righteousness
1. Doctrine: the scripture sets the standard of quality and value
i. Deuteronomy 32:2 – My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the
small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass

ii. Textual: develop one verse of scripture
iii. Topical: develop a subject or topic
a. Gather materials to build a it – books, syllabi, Way mags, STS tapes, etc

teaching – He knows more about the hearts and lives of the people you will be teaching to
3. Accuracy rules, not speed.
4. Organization:
i. Introduction- people respond better to a gradual approach – short, simple, clear

ii. Counsel can be confusing but examples are always clear
iii. “I might misunderstand what you say, but there is no mistatking how you live and how you act”
iv. The Word we live and breathe makes us qualified to counsel others
o God’s Word does the work… all we need to do is believe!

unsearchable. 4One generation shall praise thy works to another, and shall declare thy mighty acts

followed the LORD my God. 9And Moses sware on that day, saying, Surely the land whereon thy feet have trodden
shall be thine inheritance, and thy children's for ever, because thou hast wholly followed the LORD my God. 10And
now, behold, the LORD hath kept me alive, as he said, these forty and five years, even since the LORD spake this
word unto Moses, while the children of Israel wandered in the wilderness: and now, lo, I am this day fourscore and
five years old. 11As yet I am as strong this day as I was in the day that Moses sent me: as my strength was then, even
so is my strength now, for war, both to go out, and to come in
1. Love God as best as you can – be fully persuaded, no regrets
Session 4 – Student Teachers – “Leading By Example”

1. Stephanie Davis: Acting in Confidence

a. James 2:17, 18 - 17Even so faith, if it hath not works, is dead, being alone. 18Yea, a man may say, Thou hast
faith, and I have works: shew me thy faith without thy works, and I will shew thee my faith by my works
i. We act differently when we have real confidence – we show our believing by our actions
b. I Samuel 17:24, 42-52 -   24And all the men of Israel, when they saw the man, fled from him, and were sore
afraid. ____ 42And when the Philistine looked about, and saw David, he disdained him: for he was but a
youth, and ruddy, and of a fair countenance. 43And the Philistine said unto David, Am I a dog, that thou
comest to me with staves? And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. 44And the Philistine said to David,
Come to me, and I will give thy flesh unto the fowls of the air, and to the beasts of the field. 45Then said
David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to
thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 46This day
will the LORD deliver thee into mine hand; and I will smite thee, and take thine head from thee; and I will
give the carcases of the host of the Philistines this day unto the fowls of the air, and to the wild beasts of
the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel. 47And all this assembly shall know that
the LORD saveth not with sword and spear: for the battle is the LORD's, and he will give you into our
hands. 48And it came to pass, when the Philistine arose, and came, and drew nigh to meet David, that David
hastened, and ran toward the army to meet the Philistine. 49And David put his hand in his bag, and took
thence a stone, and slang it, and smote the Philistine in his forehead, that the stone sunk into his forehead;
and he fell upon his face to the earth. 50So David prevailed over the Philistine with a sling and with a stone,
and smote the Philistine, and slew him; but there was no sword in the hand of David. 51Therefore David ran,
and stood upon the Philistine, and took his sword, and drew it out of the sheath thereof, and slew him, and
cut off his head therewith. And when the Philistines saw their champion was dead, they fled. 52And the men
of Israel and of Judah arose, and shouted, and pursued the Philistines, until thou come to the valley, and to
the gates of Ekron. And the wounded of the Philistines fell down by the way to Shaaraim, even unto Gath,
and unto Ekron.

conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity
i. We are examples through the Word of God that we allow to dwell in us richly and then choose to
speak with boldness.
ii. Jesus Christ is our greatest example of a man who lived and spoke the accuracy of the Word
b. Matthew 4:3-4, 10-11 – 3And when the tempter came to him, he said, If thou be the Son of God, command
that these stones be made bread. 4But he answered and said, It is written, Man shall not live by bread
alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. ______  10Then saith Jesus unto him,
Get thee hence, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou
serve. 11Then the devil leaveth him, and, behold, angels came and ministered unto him.

the benefits that will result – both personal and to the household of God.
4. Sarah Ryan: Jesus Christ as an Example
a. John 3:13-16 – 13And no man hath ascended up to heaven, but he that came down from heaven, even the
Son of man which is in heaven. 14And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son
of man be lifted up: 15That whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have eternal life. 16For God so
loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but
have everlasting life
i. He was teaching with his life and actions
b. I Peter 5:2, 3 – 2Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint,

examples to the flock
5. Jason Carter: How We Can Lead By Example Despite Worldy Circumsances
a. Philippians 3:13, 14 – 13Brethren, I count not myself to have apprehended: but this one thing I do, forgetting

him unto the other side, while he sent the multitudes away. 23And when he had sent the multitudes away,
he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and when the evening was come, he was there alone. 24But the
ship was now in the midst of the sea, tossed with waves: for the wind was contrary. 25And in the fourth
watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea. 26And when the disciples saw him walking on
the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they cried out for fear. 27But straightway Jesus spake
unto them, saying, Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid. 28And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be
thou, bid me come unto thee on the water. 29And he said, Come. And when Peter was come down out of
the ship, he walked on the water, to go to Jesus.
i. Jesus Christ put his trust in God and became a visual example to the disciples
7. Erica Stevens: Faithfulness
a. We are here because of the faithfulness of the spiritual leaders who went before us
b. Luke 16:10 – He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much: and he that is unjust in the least

10. John Lynch: Why We Lead By Example
a. “Sermons We See” by Edgar Guest
i. I'd rather see a sermon than hear one any day;
I'd rather one should walk with me than merely tell the way.
The eye's a better pupil and more willing than the ear,
Fine counsel is confusing, but example's always clear;
And the best of all the preachers are the men who live their creeds,
For to see good put in action is what everybody needs.
I soon can learn to do it if you'll let me see it done;
I can watch your hands in action, but your tongue too fast may run.
And the lecture you deliver may be very wise and true,
But I'd rather get my lessons by observing what you do;
For I might misunderstand you and the high advise you give,
But there's no misunderstanding how you act and how you live.
When I see a deed of kindness, I am eager to be kind.
When a weaker brother stumbles and a strong man stays behind
Just to see if he can help him, then the wish grows strong in me
To become as big and thoughtful as I know that friend to be.
And all travelers can witness that the best of guides today
Is not the one who tells them, but the one who shows the way.
One good man teaches many, men believe what they behold;
One deed of kindness noticed is worth forty that are told.
Who stands with men of honor learns to hold his honor dear,
For right living speaks a language which to every one is clear.
Though an able speaker charms me with his eloquence, I say,
b. I Timothy 4:12 – 12Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in
conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity
c. I Peter 5:1-3 –  1The elders which are among you I exhort, who am also an elder, and a witness of the
sufferings of Christ, and also a partaker of the glory that shall be revealed: 2Feed the flock of God which is
among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready
mind; 3Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being examples to the flock
