Topic
Information and communications technologies (ICT) are increasingly viewed as strategic resources for managing health care resources. Clinical Information System (CIS), in particular, captures clinical data to support more efficient and effective decision making and clinical care delivery. It is a comprehensive, integrated information system designed to manage the administrative, financial and clinical aspects of a hospital. This encompasses paper-based information processing as well as data processing machines. Furthermore, it can be composed of one or a few software components with specialty-specific extensions as well as of a large variety of sub-systems in medical specialties. Its aim is to achieve the best possible support of patient care and administration by electronic data processing. CIS varies with regards its type and its corresponding functionalities. Listed below are some types of an CIS: Critical Care Applications Community Health Applications Ambulatory Care System Internet Tools for Advance Nursing Practice Informatics Solution for Emergency Preparedness and Responses Critical Care Applications Critical Care is also called Intensive Care. People with life-threatening injuries and illnesses need critical care. It involves close, constant attention by a team of specially-trained health professionals. It usually takes place in an intensive care unit (ICU) or trauma center. Monitors, intravenous (IV) tubes, feeding tubes, catheters, ventilators and other equipment are common in critical care units. These can sustain life but can also increase the risk of infection. While patients may recover, death is a possibility for people in critical care. Communication with health care providers and family members is an important part of making end-of-life decisions. Critical Care Information Systems provide real-time resource utilization data and management of information and access critical care areas through the integration of the medical facilities in the critical care or intensive care unit to an intelligent computer system which is capable of processing all data. CCISs enable the electronic collection of hospital and patient-specific critical care data of the entire patient in the critical care areas which can be processed to create a patient profile which generate real time and historical report on indicators including bed occupancy, delayed discharges, readmission rates, and outcomes.

Discussion

Automated collection and management of medical information will become the important task of the critical care information system. Advantages of Critical Care Information System Intelligently integrates and process physiologic and diagnostic information and store it to secured clinical repository. Creates trends analysis with graphical representation of results. Offline stimulation can be performed to test the condition of the patients. Provide clinical decision support system Provide access to vital patient information Providing feedback and quick evaluation of the patient condition and provides alert.

Critical Care Applications are areas where patients require complex assessment, highintensity medication, continuous therapy and interventions, and unrelenting nursing attention and continuous watchfulness. These are technological softwares programmed for digital computers and PDA users such as Android and Macintosh devices. These aid health care professionals in the intensive care field such as Cardiology, Pediatrics, Neurological, Medical Emergencies, and etc. CCAs assist the nurse manager and staff nurse to develop a computer proposal that will best meet the needs of each unit and be cost-effective in selection of software and time-saving in comparing computer hardware options. (Clochesy, 1986) Examples: QSCritical Care Clinical Information System Critical Care ACLS Guide

Community Health Applications These are applications supporting community health personnel in their promotive and preventive aspect of care by aiding in data gathering, statistics, analysis, decision-making and etc. The collection of this information is important not only at the health facility level, but also at the community level, given that the majority of deaths and illnesses never reach the health facility and so frequently go unreported. Example: NextGen EMR/EHR Epi Info Ambulatory Care System By ambulatory care we mean medical care provided in physician offices and outpatient clinics. Ambulatory Care System Ihas been in use by physicians since July 1, 1973.It is usually computer-assisted, designed to store, manipulate, and retrieve information for planning, organizing, directing, and controlling administrative activities associated with the provision and

utilization of ambulatory care services and facilities. It is highly recommend that clinicians in
ambulatory health systems develop more robust health information technology systems, especially for safety surveillance; improve communication among providers and patients, especially for transitions in care; and develop and implement interventions to better prepare and support patients to safely manage their chronic disease at home. Example: Computer- Stored Ambulatory Record (COSTAR)

Internet Tools for Advance Nursing Practice The Internet is a worldwide network of computers with powerful communication capabilities. Electronic mail, World Wide Web, search engines, Usenet, and databases are tools to send, receive, and search for information via the internet. Internet tools are helper applications to aid nurses in actual provision of nursing care. internet tools can enhance the practice of nurses and associates. Examples: Internet Domains Internet-Available Clinical Practice Tools Web-found health risk calculators Practice and Treatment Guidelines: Professional Organization Sites Medical Dictionaries Disease Directories Informatics Solution for Emergency Preparedness and Responses Most of the time, emergency responses are delayed because of such external factors like distance of the major concern or the emergency and panic planning. Early informatics contributions to the emergency planning and response agenda have focused largely on surveillance of threat detection. A broader assessment of possible informatics contributions unveils that informatics can also contribute to increasing the efficiency in disaster response as well as providing a tele-presence for remote medical caregivers. Example: Real-time Outbreak and Disease Surveillance (RODS)
