Eton's way to learn Arabic: (How to do well in this class)

Welcome to the class! ah-lan wa sah-lan!! ahsahAnd, congratulations! ( mabrook!) You have decided to take on (or to persevere in taking on) the most important thing that you can do to understand the Arab World, relate in a positive way to Arabic-speaking people, and communicate effectively with them. Your action in taking this class demonstrates that you are keenly aware of the world in which we live, and are determined to make your mark in it. Both attributes (awareness and determination) are essential to learning to speak the Arabic language which is what we are going to do. I. THREE PRACTICAL POINTERS
With this goal of speaking the language foremost in our minds, here are 3 pointers to start off: 1- Make your mouth and hand do what your mind is learning. Study out loud: get your mouth, your vocal chords, your eyes and your mind to all work together! You learn to speak by speaking. There is no other way of doing it! If you are using technology, be sure to talk back to it, out loud. Create an Arabic body-mind connection. This will help you to speak up in Arabic without having to think too much about it. 2- Make mistakes!!! How do you learn how to juggle? By dropping the ball many times. To ski? By falling. To swim? By swallowing a lot of water. You learn to speak Arabic by saying a lot of things that might sound funny. Its not a problem. Try again and again, take breaks, and come back to it for more attempts. 3- Work on Arabic every day (or even better, play with it)! Study, read, listen, talk, write, drill, chant, sing. Listen to Arabic pop songs, watch Arabic movies, and browse Arabic magazines, newspapers, and websites. Go to restaurants serving Arabic or Middle Eastern food and speak to the Arabic speakers there, if there are any. Try saying MARHABA to someone and find out where they are from. Keep the conversations going and afterwards make an effort to remember what you discover, new words, expressions, and gestures. And then tell us all about it when you come to class.

II. THE FOUR STRUGGLES OF LANGUAGE LEARNING


Basically, you have four basic struggles to wage every day to learn Arabic: sounds; structures; vocabulary; culture

Sounds: are the building blocks of the language. You have to work on these and master them (and Arabic has the additional challenge of learning a new written alphabet). Listen and imitate. Keep at it and dont give up; take breaks and come back to it later. Try to understand that it is not impossible to master the sound system of Arabic 100%. Mastery of the sounds of the language is vital to effective communication. You will be pleased to see Arab faces light up when they see that you are speaking their language, if you are making the right sounds. One gets a great deal of recognition and delighted encouragement from Arabic speakers, from simply making the effort to say something in Arabic: by so doing you are according recognition to their language, something that is held in very high esteem. Language is what people say (and what they write). Structure: also known as grammar. How letters and words combine to convey a meaning. What are the thought patterns of the language. Note that you can probably function adequately knowing only 50% of the languages grammar, if you have the sounds mastered! But: it is still essential to read the explanations on grammar and structure in the text book carefully, word-by-word reading for understanding, not for skimming. Think through what is written on the page for you, read sequentially, one sentence after the other. Think about what is being said. Go through the examples and understand it, and if you get stuck and do not understand something, or find it confusing, please ask your teacher for clarification! Vocabulary: This is the really so exciting one in Arabic, because of the word roots in Arabic, for example we can do from one root like (KTB) in the word (KaTaBa) which means (he wrote), we can say: KaaTeB= writer, KeTaab= Book, maKTaB= office, maKTaBa= library, and more For our purposes, however, I do not expect feverish cramming! In building up new Arabic vocabulary it is best to focus upon what you are learning in class or words introduced in the textbook: stick with these words, which are chosen and introduced to help your pronunciation to fulfill basic conversational needs, and build on what is familiar. Develop your active vocabulary (vocabulary you have at the tip of your tongue, ready to use), gradually, steadily. Dont start collecting too much vocabulary from outside the classroom, at the beginning. Culture: when something is said, and when it is not said. How you say things, including tone of voice, gesture, expression, posture, demeanor, personal space. This is the realm of politeness and courtesy, how one is expected to behave in a given society. Arabic culture is tightly bound up with the Arabic language, and it is very diverse, just as the varieties (and registers) of Arabic are diverse. It is a culture with roots going back thousands of years that has undergone rapid and often destructive change in the past century. There is a lot to learn! Regards Eton's Arabic Instructors

Goals and Objectives:
In this level students will learn basic lessons in Modern standard Arabic starts with Arabic sound, consonants, and vowels, Arabic alphabet and additional characters and signs used in Arabic handwriting ,each lesson begins with a dialogue presenting a situation in an Arabic locale followed by a transliteration and an English translation. Student also will learn how to read and write in Arabic.
