Saga of Ramasimhan & Mattumal Narasimha Temple- I

By: V. Sundaram (The writer is a retired IAS officer) vsundaram@newstodaynet.com Wednesday, 05 August, 2009, 02:40 PM Tipu Sultan (Ruler of Mysore from 1786 - 1799) invaded Malabar and Coorg in 1792 and his Islamic depredations continued till 1798. The atrocities let loose by him and his jihadi army against the Hindus of Malabar I call it HINDU HOLOCAUST have become an inseparable and deathless part of the abiding cultural consciousness and collective memory of the race among the Hindus of Kerala today. These thoughts and memories about the brutal persecution of the Hindus of Malabar and the organized jihadi destruction of innumerable Hindu Temples in Malabar by Tipu and his army in the 18th century can never be erased on confiscated by any government today, either by the Islamic Marxist Government of Kerala or the Islamic / Christian UPA Government of India.

Ruins and Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple Physical Fruits of Tipu Sultans Jihadi compassion of 1794 In this context it becomes very relevant to refer to the savage destruction of Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple by Tipu Sultan and his army at Angadipuram in Malapuram District, Kerala in 1794. The ruins of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple have not only centuries of chequered history but also a unique place in the history of Kerala, depicting the challenges faced by the peace loving and cultured Hindus of this part of Muslim dominated Malappuram district.

Ruins and Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple The Islamic benediction of Moplah Marauders in 1921

The next tragic stage in the Islamic destruction of Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple was reached during the dark days of Moplah Rebellion of 1921. The remnants and dismantled portions of Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple destroyed by Tipu Sultan in 1794, were also attacked and obliterated with Islamic fervour by the Moplah marauders. More than 2000 Hindus in Malabar District were slaughtered by the Moplahs in a matter of days. More than 25000 Hindus were forcibly converted to Islam. Islamic gangsters looted the property of Hindus and occupied their lands. The value of property destroyed was put by the Government of India at Rs 5 Crores (at 1921 level of prices!!!) There was no end to molestations, abductions and rape of Hindu girls and women. The history of Malaparamba Maattummal Narasimha Moorthy Temple the traditions, the folk lore and cultural practices associated with worship in this temple are indeed very interesting. Maalaparamba Maattummal Narasimha Moorthy Temple ranks foremost even among the ancient and famous Narasimha Moorthy temples that stretch back in time to over four thousand years. Around four Kilometers down the road leading from Angadipuram Railway station, the capital of the erstwhile kingdom of Valluva-Naadu, to Vallaan-cheri there is a scenic hill area called maala-parambu. In the Angaadi-puram Sub Division on the sacred part of the Earth measuring 600 acres there once stood this majestic and stately Lord Narasimha Temple. By the grace of Lord Narasimha, people once lived here in harmony, prosperity and happiness, free from fear and want. In the massive East-facing sanctum sanctorum the moorthy of the four-armed Mahavishnu in Narasimha form reigned supreme. Among the minor deities MahaGanapathy, Prabha, Satyaka, Dharma Shasta, Bhadrakaali, the highly venerated Durga and Subramania had lit up the precincts with their d ivine splendour. Now, there is only a baalalaya or temporary place for worship in existence here. All around the temple premises, one can see the horrifying remains of the jihad against Hindus, represented by broken temple columns and shattered moortis which were once revered and venerated not only by common people but also by great sages and seers of antiquity. According to certain hoary oral local traditions in certain villages of Palghat District today, Adi Sankara and Madhavacharya offered prayers at this Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple. Innumerable rishi-munis had sanctified this hallowed land by dint of their long, gruelling and arduous penance. From times immemorial easwara-chaitanyam (Spritual Immanence of god) had joyfully flitted about in this realm. Tradition has it that a Maharshi of extraordinary spiritual prowess in timeless antiquity had a darshan of Lord Mahavishnu in his fearsome Narasimha aspect. The maharshi upon receiving this flash of divine grace built a place of worship and commenced worship of Lord Narasimha with all due ceremony. Following the rites and ceremonies prescribed in the Vedas and observing the tantra and other rituals laid down by the mantra-shastras, over time and across centuries, the rishi-munis enhanced and enriched the divine presence in the temple. Consequently this sacred place was hallowed and blessed by the Divine Grace of Lord Narasimha and the devout people of this area attained greater and greater levels of prosperity, joy, contentment and peace. For several aeons this renowned shrine radiated bright, brilliant beams of divyachaitnya all around. Due to efflux of time, the brahmanas who had participated in the affairs of the temple had suffered a schism into Shaiva and Vaishnava sects and sectarian conflicts followed soon after. The sectarian strife and petty religious quarrels had their debilitating effects on the administration of the Malaparamba Maattummal Narasimha Moorthy Temple. Consequently, the temples fortunes too declined slowly. When the temple finally fell to ruins the temple lands were taken over and administered by the local rulers, the Kundrackal Nair chieftains of the area where the Temple once stood. According to local legends in Angadipuram, in ancient times a Kundrackal Nair ruler went on a royal hunt. Instead of bagging a few deer and wild boar, he committed a royal blunder and killed a docile milch cow. Greatly saddened by this sorry turn of events, the remorseful Kundrackal Nair ruler sat under a tree and did an intense penance, chanting the hallowed name of Lord Narayana. The Nair ruler said to himself, Lord Narayana is everything, everywhere, HE dwells in every heart. I worship Lord Vishnu who has become the Universe and pervades all. HE is the Lord of the Past, Present and the Future. HE is the being and essence of all things. HE is existence, its cause and its support. He is the origin and the power. HE is the Lord. His Forms are many, but HE is hidden. HIS face is everywhere. Immensely pleased by the rigorous penance of the Kundrackal Nair ruler, Lord Narayana appeared before him in HIS fearsome Narasimha aspect. Beatified and spiritually fortified by the Holy Vision of the Lord, the

Kundrackal ruler restored this ancient Temple to its former glory. Thus the Narasimhamoorthy Temple that was the pulsating hub of the spiritual and social life of the Hindus in this area for centuries came back to renewed life and new vigour. Thanks to the devotion and munificence of the Kundrackal Nair ruler, the Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple started glimmering again in the light of spiritual effulgence, blessing and endowing the people of the area with prosperity, marked by ever growing wealth, never fading joy and contentment. As I have mentioned above, the inadvertent slaughter of a cow was the fortuitous circumstance which led to the change of heart of the local Kundrackal Nair ruler and restoration of the ancient temple. Matu meaning cow found its way into the name of the Malaparamba Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple. When H.H Kaanipayyur Krishnan Namboodiri was laying the foundation stone for the reconstruction of the temple on 16 January, 2008, all of a sudden, a herd of cows came into the temple premises from, no one knows from where, strengthening and fortifying the traditional belief in the legend of the Kundrackal Nair ruler who had originally committed the sin of cow-slaughter and who later repented for his sin, becoming an awakened and enlightened soul with the full Grace and Benediction of Lord Narayana. One of the very rich Moplah Muslims of the area called UNEEN SAHIB came under the spiritual influence of a Hindu Siddha Maharishi and came back to the fold of Hinduism in the middle 1940s along with many other members of his family. This cost great fury and consternation among the fundamentalist Moplah Muslims of this area. On becoming a Hindu, Uneen Sahib got the Hindu name of RAMASIMHAN. One of his brothers got the Hindu name of DAYASIMHAN. Dayasimhan later became NARASIMHAN on his becoming a NAMBOOTIRI BRAHMIN. Ramasimhan, in order to atone for his sin of desecration of the Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple at Angadipuram, took upon himself the responsibility of rebuilding this ancient temple in 1946. After he had completed the rebuilding of the Temple towards the beginning of 1947, a few days prior to the formal Kumbabhishekam of the newly-built temple, Ramasimhan and many members of his family along with their retainers were brutally murdered by a pack of Islamic Moplah Marauders on the night of the Second of August, 1947. Look closely and you can see the petrified blood drops of a Hindu martyr, Ramasimhan in the temple premises even today, castigating all of us the Hindus for not displaying enough of self-esteem and martial spirit to defend our ancient and venerable places of worship against the barbarous Islamic Moplah marauders. The sprit of Ramasimhan, even today, is giving this Clarion Call to all the Hindus, not only in Malapuram District but in this whole of India: Be Yee Men of Valour! Be in Readiness for the Conflict!! It is better to Perish in Battle than to see the outrage of your Altar!!!.

Saga of Ramasimhan & Mattumal Narasimha Temple II

By: V SUNDARAM vsundaram@newstodaynet.com Thursday, 06 August, 2009, 03:03 PM In these columns yesterday (Wednesday, 5-8-2009), I had referred to the sad and chequered history of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple at Malaparamba and how Tipu Sultan and his jihadi Muslim army destroyed this Temple in 1794. 127 years later the shattered remnants of this Temple were again savagely attacked in the Moplah Rebellion of 1921. I had also described the heroic role played by Ramasimhan (a rich Moplah Muslim Uneen Sahib who returned from Islam into the fold of Hinduism) in the reconstruction of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple. The saga of Ramasimhan and his martyrdom for the deathless cause of Hinduism will continue to shine across centuries on the pages of Hindu cultural history, serving as a beacon light of hope, faith and inspiration to the bruised and battered Hindus of India.

Hindu Martyr - Ramasimhan a rare picture To the south of Malappuram town, over a mile distance away in the Kotoor Amsom in a village called Chemmun Kadavu there lived a Muslim gentleman called Moidu Sahib in the house named Thekke Palliyaali. Rising up from the ranks of daily labourers, by the dint of sheer hard work and tireless exertions, he raised himself to the level of a land owner. Moidu Sahib had two sons, Uneen and Alippu. Uneen who was comparatively better educated worked in a responsible position in a British-owned rubber estate in Paalappilli, Trichur District. The industrious Uneen learnt the techniques of rubber cultivation, tapping and processing while working in the rubber estate. Uneen, now Uneen Sahib, took on lease from the Kundrackal Nair family, 600 acres of land in Maalaparamba in the Angaadipuram Taluk and established the Moidu Rubber Estate at the beginning of the Twentieth Century. The British colonial authorities conferred the title of Khan Sahib on Uneen Sahib as the latter was a tax paying land lord who was on excellent terms with them. Uneen Sahib married the daughter of a prominent timber merchant, Kalladi UnniKammu of Mannarkadu. Uneen Sahibs close and regular interaction with the British colonial officers created in him a voracious appetite for wine, women and song. Uneen Sahib and his family stayed in the rubber estate bungalow at Maalaparamba on the Perinthalmanna Kulathoor Road, between Kulathoor and Angadipuram. On the other side of the road, from the bungalow, stood the ruins of ancient Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple, now looking forlorn and desolate. Despite his high social standing, Uneen Sahib behaved like any other traditional Muslim in religious matters. He had the typical supercilious and insufferable air of Islamic contempt for Hindu modes of worship and way of living. He took special delight in displaying the typical Aurangazeb-like jihadi behaviour, fuelled by hate and contempt for the Hindu Kafir. Like many Muslim rulers of medieval India, Uneen Sahib used the damaged, yet beautiful, engraved colonnades and beams from the temple ruins in the construction of latrine of his spacious bungalow. His real intent was to humiliate the Hindus by committing what was the ultimate act of contempt and sacrilege to the Hindu Deities. Calamities after calamities an unending wave of divinely ordained visitations started descending upon Uneen Sahib after he used the temple relics to construct the latrine in his bungalow, giving him no rest or peace of mind. An incurable searing stomach-ache troubled him ceaselessly. On being advised by the local Hindus, Uneen Sahib consulted a Hindu Siddha ascetic and some prominent astrologers who then advised him to reconstruct the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple, restoring it to its original glory and grandeur of ages past.

By virtue of his close and intimate association with the Hindu Siddha ascetic, the character and personality of Uneen Sahib underwent a dramatic change for the better. Uneen Sahibs chronic stomach aliment came to a sudden and dramatic end. He started experiencing the joy of wholesome good health. As an act of thanksgiving, he became vegetarian and started practicing yoga and meditation. Uneen Sahib became more and more Hindu-like in his thoughts words and deeds. He appointed two Hindu Brahmin cooks Narayana Iyer from Angadipuram and Raju Iyer from Trichur. Besides, Uneen Sahib started replacing Muslim employees with Hindu employees in his rubber estate. The rubber estate bungalow which had once enjoyed a colourful Western reputation for wine, women and Western song was transformed beyond imagination. Large pictures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses came to adorn the bungalow, creating an ambience and aura of fervent Hindu devotion to the Almighty. The place which had resounded to the incantations of verses from the Kuran and where ritual killing of animals had taken place, now started resonating with the sweet strains of the mellifluous renditions of puranas and itihaas. All this he did even while remaining within the religious fold of Islam. This sudden and rapid spiritual transformation that had taken place in Uneen Sahib totally perplexed and vexed the Muslims to no end. Many of the fundamentalist Muslims were infuriated by the heresy of Uneen Sahib. Determined and organised efforts made by many Muslims clerics and other Muslim friends to bring Uneen Sahib back to the Islamic way of living, met with dismal failure. Frustrated by their failure they spread the rumour that Uneen Sahib had gone insane. Under the influence of the powerful Muslim clergy, Uneen Sahibs father-in-law, the wealthy Unnikammu took away his daughter, Uneen Sahibs wife. Uneen Sahib decided to lead a pure life, studying Hindu scriptures and philosophical texts. Uneen Sahib and his brother Alippu decided to re-convert to Hinduism. As the culmination of this holy quest he went to the Arya Samaj at Calicut along with his brother and sons and got converted into Hinduism under the ritualistic shuddhi offered by Buddha Singh, a gentleman from Punjab in 1946. On coming back to the fold of Hinduism, Unnen Sahib was given the new Hindu name of RAMASIMHAN while Alippu his younger brother was renamed as DAYASIMHAN. Ramasimhans sons changed their names to Fateh Singh and Jorwar Singh, the sacred names of Guru Gobind Singhs two valiant sons who were murdered on the orders of Aurangazeb on December 12, 1705 for refusing to accept Islam. R.S.S Malabar prachaarak Sri Shankar Shastri made all the necessary arrangements for the Hindu Homecoming of Uneen Sahib and family. Now it only remained for Ramasimhan to undertake and complete the sacred unfinished task of reconstruction of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple. Under the instructions and guidance of two scholars of repute, one, Kanipayyur Namboothiri, a renowed expert on tachchu-shastra and the art of temple building and the other, a tantri by the name Kaaladi Vasudevan Namboothiri of Padinjareedathu Mana, the massive project of re-building the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple was started by Uneen Sahib in right earnest. After the Temple was rebuilt and re-established in accordance with the norms of tantra-shastra, daily worship and ceremonial rituals were started and continued to be performed conscientiously with unfailing devotion. Easwaran Embraantiri of Angadipuram was appointed as the chief priest of the Temple. Another significant development took place in Ramasimhans family. At the request of Ramasimhan some of the learned Namboodiri Brahmins agreed to convert Dayasimhan to a Namboodiri Brahmin and his name was changed to NARASIMHAN NAMBOODIRI. Probably they needed an experienced man in their midst who could understand the mindset of the jihadis and stand up to them in the new changed situation. They even got Dayasimhan married to a Namboodiri girl named Kamala a very extraordinary and bold act on the part of the orthodox Namboodiri Brahmin community, which had remained insular for centuries. When a fundamentalist Muslim scholar criticised the conversion as a great fault of Ramasimhan, he retorted: I have not committed any mistake. It was my grandmother who, on being captured by

Muslims, committed the fault of converting to Islam. I am re-converting to Hinduism to rectify for the fault and atone for the sin of my grandmother. In the Muslim strong-hold of Malappuram, the conversion of a wealthy and prominent Muslim family of Uneen Sahib filled the Muslims with astonishment and trepidation. The Muslim clergy trembled at the thought that many more Muslims seeking liberation from their tight suffocating grip and escaping to the liberal environment of Hinduism. They were convinced that they will be left with fewer and fewer adherents if the Muslims become aware of the greatness, glory and grandeur of the ancient Hinduism. On coming back to Hinduism Ramasimhan, became a champion of peace. He had earlier been an excellent hunter. Yet now he hung up his double barrel guns and six licensed revolvers and became an adherent of the doctrine of ahimsa. He returned his licensed guns to the government. Ramasimhans act of surrendering his guns to the government served as a boon to the terrorist Islamic assailants MOPLAH Muslim Marauders on the midnight of 2 August, 1947. On that fateful night, a pack of hate-filled diabolical jihadis armed with deadly weapons entered the house of Ramasimhan and in a dastardly act slaughtered the sleeping Ramasimhan, his brother Narasimhan, his wife Kamala Antarjanam and their cook Raju Iyer, in cold-blood. Within two weeks of martyrdom of Ramasimhan, the savage Moplah Muslim vandals demolished the beautiful Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple and its side walls. They then threw the divine moorthies into Temple wells and Temple ponds. The Moplah Muslims slaughtered a cow and an ox on the spot where the Temple once stood, in an attempt to reduce the easwara-chaitanya of the Temple. The terrified Hindus of the locality even feared to retrieve and give a funeral to the bodies of the slain Ramasimhan and family. For a long period of time the blood stains of the slain Ramasimhan and his family were seen on the walls of the Rubber Estate Bungalow. What is inspiring to note is that a new temple committee, consisting of enthusiastic, public-spirited and courageous men of faith, has been constituted to rebuild Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple at the same site. This committee has armed himself with a suitable order of an appropriate Civil Court to undertake this secret task of reconstruction. The President of this committee is Sri C.P. Janarthanan.

Saga of Ramasimhan & Mattumal Narasimha Temple III

By: V SUNDARAM vsundaram@newstodaynet.com Monday, 10 August, 2009, 04:21 PM In these columns on Wednesday, 5 August, 2009 and Thursday, 6 August, 2009, I had detailed the heroic role played by Sri Ramasimhan and his family in rebuilding the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple at Malaparamba, near Angadipuram, in Malappuram District. Tipu Sultan and his Muslim army had destroyed the major portions of this Temple in 1794. What ever remains/ruins that remained unmolested at the site were totally destroyed by the Moplah Muslim marauders during the Moplah Rebellion in 1921.

The premises of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple as it exists now. In the above photograph, we can see across the road on the right side a large bluish multistoried building which today houses the M E S Medical College. Ramasimhans rubber estate bungalow once stood there.

After the mass murder of Ramasimhan and his family at this bungalow on the midnight of 2 August, 1947, the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple was again razed to the ground in the third week of August 1947. The Muslim occupiers of this bungalow found it terrifying to live there due to unexplained recurring disturbances and unforeseen calamities happening from time to time in their families. Taking note of this disturbing factor, the Muslim owners of this bungalow decided to hand over the land with Ramasimhans bungalow for the construction of a medical college. Even after the bungalow has been demolished and the coming up of the medical college, on many nights, medical students, patients, medical staff and watchmen etc are still experiencing spine chilling incidents by way of heart-rending screams of a woman being murdered, followed by loud roaring animal noises. Some residents of the medical college building have continued to experience the shock of sudden physical attacks by invisible assailants. In front of this medical college, a Mosque has been constructed just across the road from the original temple premises, with the sole Islamic intent of humiliating the Hindus. Inside the temple premises now there is a small red coloured building which is the baalaalaya or the temporary temple where worship is conducted. This temporary temple will house the deity while the main temple is being re-constructed following the clearance given by a court of law in 2003 for the re-construction of the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple at this spot. To go back to the sad story of martyrdom of Ramasimhan and his family at his own bungalow on the midnight of 2 August, 1947. Within two weeks of martyrdom of Ramasimhan, the savage Moplah Muslims demolished the beautiful Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple and its side walls. They then threw the divine moorthies into Temple wells and Temple ponds. The Malabar District Police took immediate action to arrest the murderers of Ramasimhan and his family. A remarkable police detective called Keshava Menon apprehended the 9 murderers after collecting the necessary incriminating evidence and filed charge sheets against them. He was successful in retrieving the murder weapons from the pond in which they were dumped. Four of the murderers were sentenced to death by the District and Sessions Court at Palghat. The Moplah Muslim community rallied behind the marauders by raising a large sum of money for their legal defence on appeal in the High Court of Madras. Honble Justice Horwill J of the Madras High Court, in a judgement he delivered on 19 January, 1949, acquitted all the accused for want of credible evidence. The Honble Justice Horwill observed as follows: It is unfortunate that such a grave crime organised by the Moplah Muslims against the Hindus of the area has not been detected; ... if the police were unable to obtain more evidence it was because the Moplah community largely succeeded in maintaining secrecy. Very much like the Islam-embracing Union Ministers belonging to the Congress Party today, a Congress Minister in the then Madras Government, Sri Kozhipurathu Madhava Menon (who was a Minister in the Madras Government) allegedly collected bribes from the rich and influential Moplah landlords and business men and took an active part in the appeal proceedings filed by the Moplah murderers in the Madras High Court. All the State Advocates were specially instructed to water down the legal presentation of the case in the Madras High Court. Congress leader and advocate U Gopala Menon used under-hand means to get the case dismissed by the Madras High Court. Solid pieces of evidence were destroyed and prosecution witnesses were harassed and coerced into silence. Finally the case was dismissed on the grounds of lack of evidence. Thus the murderous Moplah Muslim jihadis were set scot free. The Hindu population of the area felt let down by the Congress leaders of the time and by the State. Ramasimhans manager, Narayana Menon, (retd.) DySP, also became a traitor, collecting bribes from the Moplahs. He handed over the guardianship of Ramasimhans sons Fateh Singh and Jorwar Singh to Ramasimhans estranged father-in-law, UnniKammu who then forcibly reconverted those two kids to Islam. When Ramasimhans (Uneen Sahibs) two sons embraced Hinduism, at the Arya Samaj Temple at Calicut, they were given the names of Fateh Singh and Jorwar Singh (names of the two martyred young sons of the tenth Sikh Guru, Guru Gobind Singh, who were put to death by Aurangazeb in 1705). After the brutal mass murder of Ramasimhan and his family, his two surviving sons Fateh Singh and Jorwar Singh were forcibly reconverted to Islam by their maternal grandfather UnniKammu. Even after this coerced conversion to Islam, the two boys remained acutely aware and conscious of their transformed Hindu identity. They later told the local Hindu leaders that they would have reverted back to Hinduism, if only the Hindu community in the area had been powerfully organised into a closely knit society. Not only that; they went a step further and even

expressed their total willingness to transfer the lands belonging to the demolished Temple back to the Hindu community in the area for management and control. A decade later, the shameless Communist traitors of Russian and Chinese vintage tried to white wash the deadly jihadi assault on Ramasimhan and family that had taken place on 2 August, 1947. 28 December 2008 issue of Mathrubhumi Malayalam daily newspaper carried the letter of EMS Namboodripad justifying that carnage. EMS Namboodripad, the Chinese stooge and Marxist traitor in Kerala justified the murder of Ramasimhan and his family and used the dialectics of Karl Marx to portray his murder as arising from economic causes, implying that the Hindu Ramasimhan was a class enemy who justly paid his price for exploiting the poor labourers of his rubber estate. In addition, he chose the typically devious communist stratagem when he blamed the Hindu organisations for the carnage. EMS Namboodripad (EMS) was a political scoundrel who in all his actions, speeches and writings presented a confused communist mixture of half-truths, smears, innuendos, non-sequitrs, contradictions, presumptuous judgements and wild fanciful obiter dicta. Sri C P Janardhanan, President of the Temple Trust told me: Mahatma Gandhi let down the Hindus of India at the national level. It was EMS who was responsible for destroying Hindu religion, Hindu society and Hindu Culture in Kerala after independence. The sheer inability and impotence of the Hindu community in the area to reclaim the lands belonging to the Mattummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple resulted in another tragedy. The 600 acres of Temple lands were alienated and sold off to different categories of Muslims. The concerned portion of the land which constituted the Temple premises was declared by the government as disputed land on which land levies remained in arrears for nearly fifty years. On 2 Aug, 1992, exactly 45 years after the martyrdom of Sri Ramasimhan, under the guidance of the Malappuram Organiser of Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP), Sri P. Radhakrishnan, VHP Prakhand Pramukh Sri Manikantan, RSS activist Sri M. Gopala Krishnan a large group of ardent Hindu followers reached the premises of the destroyed Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple. They offered floral tributes and salutations to the martyred Sri Ramasimhan and family and took the solemn pledge to rebuild the Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple even at the cost of their lives. These Hindu leaders and activists were arrested by the police. It is a known fact that in both Congress and Communist government in Kerala, Hindu leaders and Hindu organizations are harassed by wilful and arrogant police and bureaucrats who encroach upon their traditional religious rights in a planned brutal manner. Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Kerala gave a petition to the RDO to allow Hindus to conduct worship on the Disputed Land. They engaged Advocate Suresh Lal to represent them. In 1995 the Hindu activists formed a Committee to conduct a peaceful struggle to liberate the temple from non-Hindu control. A Temple Trust, consisting of leading citizens of the area, was constituted with C P JANARDHANAN as president to take necessary action to reclaim control of lands for the re-construction of the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple.

P Parameswaran, director of Bharateeya Vichara Kendra and President of Vivekananda Puram (4th from the left). Sureshji Joshi (Bhaiyaji Joshi), Sahsarkaryavah of RSS (6th from the left). C P Janardhanan, president of the Temple Trust (8th from the left).

In this context, I would like to record the bold and courageous leadership provided by Sri C P Janardhanan, the Temple Trust President, in uniting the terrorized and demoralized Hindus of the area with total focus on achieving the supreme objective or re-construction of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple. Sri C P Janardhanan, an acknowledged expert in traditional martial arts of Kerala, was the RSS Zilla Prachaarak in Calicut and Trichur. He is the Palghat Division President of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, Member of The Advisory Committee of the famous Tirumandham-Kunnu Temple at Angadipuram, Founder-Member of Sree Valluvanad Vidya Niketan and is also the president of the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple Trust. The energetic and purposeful action now being taken to re-construct the Temple under the inspiring leadership of C P Janardhanan has to be told in greater detail.

The Heroic Saga of Ramasimhan And Mattummal Sri Narasimha Temple Part IV
By: V SUNDARAM vsundaram@newstodaynet.com Tuesday, 11 August, 2009, 03:55 PM In these columns on Wednesday, 5 August, 2009, Thursday, 6 August, 2009, and Monday 10 August, 2009, I had described in graphic detail the destruction of Mattummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple at Malaparamba, near Angadipuram, in Malappuram District during TIPU SULTANS JIHAD AGAINST THE HINDUS OF MALABAR; the heroic role played by

Swami Chidandapuri of Kulattoor Advaita Ashramam laying the foundation for Sri Mattummal Narasimhamoorthy Temple in 2008. Sri Ramasimhan and his family in rebuilding the Temple; the dastardly mass murder at midnight of Ramasimhan along with his family and retainers in their sleep by a pack of blood-thirsty Muslim Moplah marauders and the repeat destruction of that temple at the hands of those frenzied savages on 17 August, 1947. I had also narrated the treacherous efforts of the Communist-Congress combine to aid and assist the Moplah Muslim murderers of unarmed Hindus in a cold, calculated, cynical and inhuman pursuit of oppressive, manipulative minority vote-bank politics after 15 August, 1947 till date The High Court of Madras might have set the jihadi murderers free in 1949, but the fearsome and implacable Lord Narasimha who destroyed the Asura Hiranyakashipu, the Vanquisher of Devendra who re-established Dharma did not spare the jihadi assasins. Kalladi UnniKammu Sahib, the estranged fatherin-law of Hindu convert Ramasimhan (Uneen Sahib) and main conspirator in the mass murder turned insane. Congress leader and advocate U. Gopala Menon, who used underhand means to get the case against the murders dismissed, turned stark raving mad soon after the court verdict and people say that his family still suffers from the divine wrath of Lord Narasimha.

C. B. K Nambiar, who was working as a Finance Officer in a business firm in Feroke Town (near Kozhikode) told Balan Pooteri, that a wealthy Muslim from Cheruvannur who took part in the Ramasimhan family slaughter had turned insane. He died a very miserable death. His family became destitute and the survivors got scattered in various directions and now there is no trace of them. The jihadis who went with him to kill Ramasimhan were found loitering aimlessly in Feroke Town, dressed in filthy, flea-infested rags and mumbling incoherent absurditiesl in public. I have gathered these stark facts from a remarkable book written in Malayalam by BALAN POOTERI titled Maalaparamba Mattummal Sree Narasimhamoorthy Temple.

Front cover of Balan Pooteris book We can see from Balan Pooteris book that fearsome episodes of untimely death, accidental death, psychosis, hysteria, family conflict, insanity, death of offsprings, loss of life and property by fire, death of cattle, unknown ailments and other plagues have been making their regular debilitating visitation on the people who were guilty of the mass murder of Ramasimhan family on the midnight of 2 August, 1947. The Temple oracle (Deva Prasnam) conducted with prescribed solemnity, established conventions and traditional devotion on 4 January, 2007 has categorically confirmed that these unhappy events / ghastly episodes are the terrible consequences of past evils committed by the concerned members of the Moplah Muslim community. Those who let loose terrorism against Ramasimhan and family on 2 August, 1947 are now facing the implacable and irrevocable nemesis the wrath of Lord Narasimha every moment every day. Melpathur Narayana Bhattatiri (1559-1632), in his immortal Narayaneeyam (Bhagavata condensed) has offered his salutations in Sanskrit to Lord Narasimha which can be translated into English as follows: Salutations to Thy Man-Lion form with facial features rendered forbidding on account of face lines that wrinkled up on roaring; with a short but stout neck; with each arm strong as a hundred, projecting powerful claws, ferocious and lustrous; and with a roaring voice whose terrific bursts, reverberating from the skies like thunder claps put the hosts of enemies into fright and flight. Inspired by the time-defying message of Narayana Bhattatiri, the bold and courageous Hindu devotees of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple and the Hindu activists of the area fought a long and tortuous legal battle and finally brought the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple premises under the control of the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple Trust. On 30 April, 2006, under the guidance and supervision of the Chief Tantri, a Ganapati Homam was conducted marking the commencement of the Temple reconstruction activity. Vilakku Festival in the Malayalam month of Karthika which fell on 4 December 2006 witnessed a remarkable scene, with hundreds of Ayyappa devotees conducting a maha-satsangam in the Temple

premises. The damaged mani-kinar or the Temple well was deepened and its side rings were strengthened. People recovered from this Temple well the moorthy of Lord Narasimha that was worshipped here earlier. The moorthy was found in a decapitated condition with its arms damaged. The moorthys of Ganapathy and Devi had suffered less damage. People excavating the well also recovered the dwaraka-palakas of the old sanctum-sanctorum, bali-kallu, stone lamps and other sacred remains of the old temple (gifts of compassionate Islam). To provide a place of worship and to enable devote Hindus to congregate in one place until the Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple is built in its entirety, a temporary temple, the BAALA-AALAYAM was consecrated. This took place on 14 March, 2007. The Temple tantri Brahmasri Shankaran Unni Nambootiripad of Padinjaaraedathu Mana of Valiyakunathu, Kaladi was entrusted with the sacred task of conducting the re-consecration of the moorthys in accordance with the temple traditions and rites and rituals. Eagles (garudas) flew over the Temple premises on 14 March, 2007 while the consecration of the temporary Temple, the Baala-aalayam was in progress, heralding good omens. People were certain that Lord Narasimha blessings will be on the people as the Temple reconstruction work progresses. The Malaparamba electrical sub-station which was being constructed by the Kerala State Electricity Board in an indifferent, slow and sluggish manner for the last 25 years (quarter century to be brief!!), was suddenly completed, on the very day on which the Baala-aalayam of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple was consecrated. Now the entire area is bathed in bright lights during the night. This has filled the minds and hearts of the devote Hindus of the area with great joy, marked by wonder and astonishment. Sri Shanker Shastri, a Swayamsevak of the RSS was deputed by Guruji Golwalkar in 1944 to Malabar District of Madras Presidency to create a new awakening among the Hindus of the area. He is now nearing his 90th year and lives in Pune. He played a very great role in the conversion of Uneen Sahib and his family to Hinduism. In other words Ramasimhan, Dayasimhan (Narasimhan Nambootiri) owed their Hindu re-birth to Sri Shanker Shastri. It was he who gave physical protection to Ramasimhan and family during their conversion to Hinduism at the Calicut Arya Samaj Temple in 1946. This great man, despite his being very old and infirm, has collected Rs 1,50,000 for the re-construction of Mattummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple. Sri Shanker Shastri visited the Baalalaya at Malaparamba on 12-5-08. We can see him in the picture below standing along with the members of the Temple Trust.

Beside him are the Members of the Temple Trust. To help the Sri Narasimhamoorthy Trust in its reconstruction efforts, a galaxy of Hindu spiritual luminaries and leaders formed a large Reconstruction Assistance Committee on 30 November, 2007. Their meeting was presided over by the State Prachaarak of the R.S.S, Sri A. Gopalakrishnan. At that meeting Swami Chidanandapuri of Kulathoor Advaita Ashrama was designated the Chief Patron and other eminent persons listed below were made patrons. Thanthri Brahmasri Shankaran Unni Nambootiripad of

Padinjaaraedathu Mana of Valiyakunathu, Kaladi, Sri P. Parameshwaran, Director, Bharateeya Vichara Kendram and President of Vivekananda Puram, Sri O. Rajagopal, EX-Union Minister, Sri P.E.B Menon, R.S.S Prant Sanghachaalak, Sri K. R. Bhaskaran Pillai of Palaemedu, Sri N.M Kadamban Nambootiri, President of Kerala Temple Protection Committee, Sri T.N Vijaya Varma of Nilambur and Sri Mattanur Shankaran Kutty. Sri C.P Janardhanan, has been nominated as the Chairman of the Temple Trust. Sri. R. Venugopal, former All India working President, Bharateeya Mazdoor Sangh, has been chosen as the Coordinator of the Reconstruction Assistance Committee. It is very significant to note that Sri R. Venugopal was a pracharaak of the RSS in his youth in Angadipuram, long time ago in August 1947, when Ramasimhan with his family and retainers were slaughtered by Moplah Muslims. On 16 January, 2008, Kanipayyur Krishnan Namboothiri, a renowned expert on tachchu-shastra and the art of temple building, in the presence of a large gathering of devout Hindus laid the foundation of the main temple for Malaparamba Matummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy. Soon after taking charge as the Coordinator of Reconstruction Assistance Committee, Sri R. Venugopal had the good fortune of visiting the ancient Sringeri Shankara Matt. The venerable Acharya at the Sringeri Shankara Matt received him with much affection and gifted a cheque for Rs 50,000. When the representatives of the Reconstruction Assistance Committee went to meet the Kanchi Shankaracharya, he presented them a cheque for Rs 10,00,000 for the re-construction of Malaparamba Mattummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple. We can see the elevation plan of the new proposed Mattummal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple below.

Plan for proposed temple construction The Temple Trust has recently created a website http://www.malaparamba-narasimhamoorthy.org/. This site is worth a visit. The reconstruction of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple should not be viewed as a mere temple building activity. This humungous sacred effort has brought together not only the people of Malappuram, but also the concerned Hindus in all other parts of Kerala and the rest of India. There is no doubt that with this reconstruction, Mattumal Sri Narasimhamoorthy Temple would become a formidable Hindu religious and social organisation that can help to organise and invigorate the Hindus and revitalize Sanatana Dharma. The clarion call of the Temple Trust to all the Hindus of Malappuram, Kerala and the rest of India is this: Hindus of Malappuram, Kerala and India unite! You have nothing to lose bur your pseudo-secular Congress, Communist, Islamic, Christian chains!! ( Concluded ) (The Writer is a retired IAS Officer) e-mail the writer at vsundaram@newstodaynet.com

Ruins of Maattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple

Physical Fruits of Tippu Sultans Jihadi fanaticism of 1794

Historical Background
The ruins of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple (1947-2009) has seen not only centuries of chequered history but it also has a unique place in the history of Kerala, depicting the challenges faced by the Hindus of this part of Muslim dominated Malappuram district after independence. A baalalaya or temporary place for worship was constructed here in 2009 to enable the devotees to perform their age old tradition of worship of Lored Narasimhamoorthy at this place. All around the temple premises, there were only the horrifying remains of the jihad against Hindus, represented by broken temple columns and shattered moortis which were once revered and venerated not only by common people but also by great seers of antiquity. One only had to look closely to see the petrified blood drops of a martyr, Ramasimhan in the temple premises, castigating us Hindus for not having enough self-esteem and courage to fight back. Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple premises are located on a beautiful hillock called Malaparamba, 4 km southwest of Angadipuram near Perinthalmanna in Malapuram district-Kerala. According to astrological calculations the antiquity of the Temple goes back to nearly 4,000 years. It is believed that owing to the unique sanctity of this place, many Rishis had conducted penance here in ancient times. One such Rishi is said to have had a darshan of MahaVishnu in the Narasimha Avataara. He then initiated the construction of the Narasimha Moorthy temple for the benefit of the public at large. In course of time the temple gained name and fame, attracting devotees from far and wide though the temple faced many vicissitudes during the centuries that followed. During the centuries that followed, the brahmanas who had participated in the affairs of the temple had suffered a schism into Shaiva and Vaishnava sects and sectarian conflicts followed soon after. The sectarian strifes and petty quarrels had their debilitating effects on the administration of the Malaparamba Maattummal Narasimha Moorthy Temple. Consequently, the temples fortunes too declined slowly and the temple finally fell to ruins. The management of the temple, later, came into the hands of the local ruling family of Kundarackkal and the Temple recaptured its lost glory. Most of the temples in Malabar fell to large scale looting, desecration and demolition in the wake of Tippu Sultans savage Islamic Jihad against the unarmed, pacifist and docile Hindu populace of Malabar. This holy Narasimhamoorthy Temple too got destroyed in Tippus jihad against the Hindus of Malabar. With most of the Hindu people slaughtered and enslaved by Tippus murderous jihadi hordes from Mysore and the rest of the Hindus converted to Islam under the threat of death by torturous dismemberment, the Temple premises, having no one to give care, became desolate ruins and soon became overgrown by thick vegetation.

First Jihad Against Hindus of Malabar

Islam had been welcomed and nurtured in Kerala for centuries. For example, the first mosque in India was somewhere near Kodungalloor (aka Muziris in Roman times). Also, by tradition, the Zamorins of Kozhikode (Calicut) enlisted Muslims in his navy and treated them rather well. Therefore, Hyder Alis and later Tipu's jihad between 1776 and 1790 traumatized the local Hindus, who had never experienced such an Aurangazebstyle religious fundamentalist mass destruction. Tippu Sultan even issued an edict for the destruction of all Hindu temples in Kerala. Tippus campaigns were often characterised by great brutality. His religious bigotry was without any parallel, cruelly slaughtering Hindus in cold blood when they refused to convert to Islam. Tipu went about with a Koran in one hand and a sword in the other giving the people of Kerala a choice of accepting Islam or facing painful death. Doing this, he marched from Calicut up to Alwaye where he was forced to retreat because of stiff military resistance from Hindu warriors. Muslim armies of Hyder Ali and Tipu Sultan murdered thousands of Hindus, looted, burnt, desecrated and destroyed hundreds of Hindu temples, engaged in forced conversion, murder, rape, kidnapping of women, selling women as slaves, forcing captured Hindu women to work as house-maids during day time and sexslaves at nights in Muslim house holds. Tipus jihadi soldiers made it a point to slaughter cows en masse. To rub it in, they always slaughtered a cow at the very spot where a Hindu moorti was worshipped, before erecting a mosque in its place. Most of the time, the moorti was smashed and placed at the steps of some mosque for the faithful Muslims to tread upon as they came for prayer.

In the wake of that murderous aggression, more than eighty percent of the temples were destroyed in Malabar. Tipu Sultan letters as researched by Kerala historian K. M. Panicker, which he reviewed in the Bhasha Poshini magazine, August 1923 1. Letter dated March 22, 1788, to Abdul Kadir: "Over 12,000 Hindus were honoured with Islam. There were many Namboodri Brahmins among them. This achievement should be widely publicised among the Hindus. Then the local Hindus should be brought before you and converted to Islam. No Namboodri Brahmin should be spared." 2. Letter dated December 14, 1988, to his army chief in Calicut: "I am sending two of my followers with Mir Hussain Ali. With their assistance, you should capture and kill all Hindus. Those below 20 may be kept in prison and 5000 from the rest should be killed from the tree-tops. These are my orders." 3. Letter dated January 18, 1790, to Syed Abdul Dulai: " ...almost all Hindus in Calicut are converted to Islam. I consider this as Jihad." The story of Tipu's savage jihadi expeditions through northern Kerala ('tippuvinte padayottam' in Malayalam) is spoken of in hushed terms, as a Hindu holocaust. The jihad against Hindus left deep and ugly scars on the Kerala Hindu psyche and the people suffer from its malevolent effects even to this day.

Second Jihad Against the Hindus of Malabar

During the Moplah Riots in 1921, the Muslims in Kerala were influenced by Mohandas Karamchand Gandhis Khilafat movement, rioted in rebellion against British Raj. They found in the local Hindu aristocracy soft targets that they could loot and slaughter without fear of reprisals. This resulted in thousands of deaths of unarmed Hindus and an equal number of forcible conversions. Parts of Kerala such as Eranad and Valluvanad were declared as Khilafat kingdoms by groups of jihadi mobs and flags of the Islamic Caliphate were flown there. Jihadis then plundered and murdered with wild abandon and killed or drove away all Hindus who would not submit to the desert death cult of Islam. Hundreds of thousands of people were driven from their homes with nothing but their clothes they had on, stripped of everything, even their human dignity. Most of temples that survived Tippus jihad against Malabar Hindus were levelled in the Moplah riots. The Narasimha Moorthy Temple too was shattered and it too faded into oblivion.

Conversion of a Muslim Family and Renovation of the Temple

On the eve of the freedom of India there was a Muslim gentleman named Uneen Sahib, belonging to a reputed Muslim family, Kiliyan Mannil at Malappuram. This educated and rich Muslim planter was given the title Khan Bahadur by the ruling British colonial authorities. He took 600 acres of Mattummal Temple land on lease from the Kundrackal Nair Family and started rubber plantation and construction of a large bungalow. He used the damaged though beautifully engraved colonnades and beams from the sacred remains from the temple ruins in the construction of latrine of the bungalow in the typical jihadi behaviour fuelled by hate and contempt for the kafir. Since then he had to face deadly diseases and innumerable financial problems. Uneen Sahib consulted a Siddha ascetic and some prominent astrologers who then advised him to reconstruct the temple with all its past glory. Simultaneously he had the vision of Goddess Durga in his dreams. This miraculous experience brought about a tremendous change in his attitude and life. Under the instructions and guidance of two scholars of repute, one, Kanipayyur Namboothiri, a renowed expert on thachchu-shasthra and the art of temple building and the other, a thanthri by the name Kaaladi Vasudevan Namboothiri of Padinjare-edathu Mana, the massive project of temple re-building started in right earnest. After the Temple was established in accordance with the norms of thanthra-shasthra, daily worship and ceremonial rituals were started and continued to be performed conscientiously with unfailing devotion. Easwaran Embraanthiri of Angadipuram was appointed as the chief priest of the Temple. Uneen Sahib abandoned his old hate-filled murderous jihadi ways, became a vegetarian and decided to lead a pure life, studying Hindu scriptures and philosophical texts. In his urge to go deep into the depths of Hindu philosophy, he actively sought the company of scholars and sanyasis and held involved discussions with them. As the culmination of this holy quest he went to the Arya Samaj at Calicut along with his brother and sons and got converted into Hinduism under the ritualistic shudhi offered by Shri Buddha Singh, a gentleman from Punjab. Shri Shanker Shastri, RSS Pracharak made arrangements for providing security at the venue.

Unnen Sahib accepted a new name Ramasimhan while Alippu his younger brother was renamed Dayasimhan. His sons changed their names to Fateh Singh and Zorawar Singh. When a Muslim scholar criticised the conversion as a great fault of Unen Sahib, he retorted-I have not committed any mistake. It was my grandmother who, on being captured, committed the fault of converting to Islam. I am re-converting to Hinduism to rectify the fault of my grandmother. After conversion to Hinduism, Ramasimhan followed the typical; Hindu lifestyle, strictly following its rites and rituals. Moreover he began to praise the virtues and magnificence of Hinduism in front of Muslim people.

Conversion to Brahmin Caste

At the request of Ramasimhan some of the learned Namboodiri Brahmins agreed to convert Dayasimhan to a Namboodiri and his name changed to Narasimhan Namboodiri. Probably they needed as a temple poojari, a strong and fearless man who could understand the jihadis and stand up to them. They even got him married to a Namboodiri girl a very rare and bold act of the orthodox Namboodiri Brahmin community. This was probably more than what the hate-filled murderous jihadis could tolerate.

Repeat Destruction of Narasimha Moorthy Temple

In the midnight of 2 August, 1947, a pack of blood thirsty jihadis, instigated by the local Muslim clergy stealthily crept into the house of Ramasimhan and in a despicable and dastardly act murdered the unarmed and sleeping Ramasimhan, his brother Narasimhan, wife Kamala, and cook Raju Aiyar in cold blood. This act of hatred, intolerance and inhuman cruelty sent a shock wave through the local Hindu community. The terrified Hindus of the locality even feared to retrieve and give a funeral to the bodies of the slain Ramasimhan and family. For a long period of time the blood stains of the slain Ramasimhan and his family were seen on the walls of the Rubber Estate Bungalow. August of 1947 was not for the Hindus of Malabar a month of celebration of partitioned independence, but a month of grieving, terror and loss of religious freedom. The fear stricken Hindus of that generation reeling under the double blow of group murder and destruction of temple which was the centre of their social and religious life received no succour from the top leadership of the political party that is alleged to have fought for Indian independence. The secularists who use the Babri building demolition to beat the Hindus have nothing to say about this Temple demolition by Muslims after Partition of India in 1947.

Court Order Restores Land to Temple

A generation of Hindus passed away in grief-stricken benumbed silence. A new generation of Hindus came up, a generation that is fighting to restore their broken self-esteem. The tragic tale of the cold blooded slaughter of Ramasimhan and family is still fresh and reverberating in the minds of the older generation. After the lapse of six decades some of us have managed to recover at least the temple area from Muslim occupants. By a court order in 2005, sixty seven cents of the temple area was handed over to the Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Trust.

Other Activities of Mattummal Sri Narasimha Moorthy Temple Trust
