Technical Circular
-Over Current & Earth Fault Protection Relay Power Tapping PointElectrical installations in some LV switchboards have the Over Current & Earth Fault Protection Relays (OC/EF) wrongly installed. This erroneous design is turning into a common practice and if left without attention will result in a network outage upstream. The Power Supply Source to the Earth Fault Protection Relay should be supplied from a reliable tap point. This tap point must not effect a tripping of the upstream circuits. Such a tapping point can be the station auxiliary supply, battery back up UPS or downstream load side tapped after the circuit breaker. We have found that in current practice, an alarming number of switchboard installations have the OC/EF installed before the circuit breaker with power tapped directly from the upstream. Such practice will incur possible upstream network interruption and result in potential damage on the Electric Supply Utility network. We raise this caveat for your consideration. The severity of an upstream circuit trip is a consequence that can be prevented.

Power Supply Input Correct Protection Relay (OC/EF) Power Tapping Point

Notes: 1. There are two types of protection relays differentiated by their system to indicate fault: Type A: Electronic fault indication system Type B: Mechanical Trip Button (MTB) fault indication system 2. Type A protection relays require the presence of a continuous power supply source for fault indication. The incorrect practice is to tap the power directly from the upstream. It is recommended to have the power tapped via an auxiliary power supply source. Type B MTB protection relays do not require external power supply for fault indication. There is no reason for installers to install the relay before the circuit breaker. However, attention must still be paid to ensure that installation follows correct practice.
