Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act of 2011 will soon be discussed and voted upon

The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act is a new bill being put forth at the US House of Representatives to fast track the deployment of energy-saving electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid technologies. The bipartisan legislation was introduced by Judy Biggert (Republican, IL) Edward J. Markey (Democrat, MA), Jerry McNerney (Democrat, CA), and Anna Eshoo (Democrat, CA). The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act is adopted will provide grants to help regional communities establish themselves as models for the successful development, installation, and deployment of advanced electric vehicle (EV)

infrastructure, including public EV charging stations. The bill also offers consumer incentives for the purchase of Electric vehicles, promotes utility modernization to accommodate EV deployment, provides assistance for the installation of an EV charging infrastructure, and encourages domestic production of EV components. Some Representative comments about The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act: Judy Biggert says If were ever to break our addiction to expensive foreign oil, and get on the fast track to electrification were going to have to give a jump start to sound alternatives. She mentioned that the legislation provides a cost-effective way to mobilize local, federal, and private resources, and keep the U.S. at the forefront of an industry that represents the future of transportation. She sighted the success of creating new jobs and developing electric vehicle battery technology at Argonne National Laboratory, which is being used in GMs Chevy Volt as an positive example of the types of improvements the bill will provide. Edward Markey, who is the Ranking Member on the House Natural Resources Committee and senior member of the House Energy and Commerce Committee said Its time for America to start driving toward a clean, safe energy future, and electric vehicles can help power the way. The new bill will also help consumers buy all-electric vehicles, which will be powered by wind farms in the northeast and midwest of the US instead of oil from the Middle East. Representative McNerney, who serves alongside Biggert on the Science, Space, and Technology Committee says he is glad to help advance the widespread use of electric vehicles. He also says the new bill has great potential for job creation in this field and its critical at this time of high unemployment that we lay the groundwork for these new opportunities. Eshoo, a senior member of the Energy and Commerce Committee says If electric vehicles are to be a realistic alternative, we need to establish the infrastructure and incentives to support the technology and that the Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act will help propel our country a new era, and Im proud to support it. The bill authorizes the Secretary of Energy to competitively award up to $300 million to each of 10 different deployment communities around the country. These communities will then serve as domestic EV hubs for manufacturing and deployment, as well as proving grounds for best practices. The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act guarantees a consumer benefit of at least $2,000 (beyond existing electric car tax credits or other federal and local incentives) for the first 50,000 EV consumers within each deployment community. In addition, the bill extends to 2014 the EV federal tax credits for the purchase and installation of electric vehicle charging equipment for individuals (up to $2000) or

businesses (up to $50,000 for multiple equipment purchases). Finally, the bill authorizes additional development, deployment and manufacturing incentives for EV technologies, including bond authority and a limited number of smaller grants for municipalities not selected as deployment communities. The Electric Drive Vehicle Deployment Act is a bipartisan bill which is supported by a broad coalition of business leaders and national security experts dedicated to ending Americas reliance on foreign oil. Andy Taylor, the Chairman and CEO of Enterprise Holdings and a member of the Electrification Coalition says this legislation can help eliminate the dangers of oil dependency, and gain control of the fuel supply that drives our vehicles, our economy and our future.
