Ques:- What factors in the contemporary business environment are causing organizations to be structured along organic lines.

Ans:- Contemporary business environments possesses organizations that are likened to living organisms that are constantly evolving. Ulrich suggests that with the changing and dynamic contextual factors, the essence of the organisation has shifted and will continue to shift from focusing on the structure to its capabilities. Organic systems are systems that can adapt to change and unfamiliar problems. It is flat, uses cross-hierarchical and cross-functional teams, has low formalization, uses lateral and upward communication and involves high participation in decisionmaking. The factors in contemporary business environment that are causing organizations to be structured along organic lines are as follows but not limited to: 1. The Environment- the organizations environment is made up of institutions or forces that are outside the organization and potentially affect the organizations performance. The environment carries with it an amount of uncertainty and some organizations face relatively static environments and yet others have very dynamic environments. Static environments create less uncertainty for managers and since uncertainty is classified as a threat to an organizations effectiveness, managers would try their best to minimize it and one way to do so is to restructure the organization. In fact, the more dynamic and uncertain the organization is, the greater the need for flexibility. Therefore the organic structure would lead to advanced organizational effectiveness. 2. Technology- technology refers to how an organization transfers its inputs into outputs. Technology is predisposed to either routine or non- routine tasks increasing or decrease them. Routine activities provide a more automated and standardized way to perform operations and non-routine operations, a more personalized and modified way. Basically, it is said the routine activities a more favoured by taller and more departmentalized structures whereas non-routine is more associated with organisations where individuals decide their own methods of completing their tasks, more in relation to the organic model. 3. Strategy- A organizations structure is designed to help management achieve its objectives, since objectives are derived from the organizations overall strategy, it is only reasonable to say that structure and strategy are linked. If management make changes to the organizations strategy, the structure will need to be modified to accommodate the changes. In the contemporary business environment, innovation strategy is a welcomed change as it provide unique and meaningful innovations to the organization. Innovators however, need the flexibility of the organic structure to pursue new undertakings.
