2011

Volume I, Issue 3: 2011

As the rain fades away and the sun begins to shine, the first signs of summer are definitely here. The end of spring brings reflection on a lot of hard work here at KidsCare Therapy. In March we headed down to Houston for another great visit to the Texas Speech-Language Hearing Association Conference. I am Cortney Baker, M.S., CCC/SLP constantly impressed by the high CFO/President of Clinical Services quality of therapists in Texas that congregate at TSHA each year, and this year proved to be no different. We enjoyed the opportunity to continue to stay in touch with the therapist community, as well as meet hundreds of new graduates. This years conference was a great success for us, and we look forward to having some of our booth visitors join the KCT team! During April we celebrated National Autism Awareness Month. This is a special time of year for so many of our patients and their families as we raise support and awareness for Autism. Making certain the early signs of this disability are recognizable is important to ensuring early intervention so that each autistic child will continue to thrive and live as normal of a life as possible. April was also National Occupational Therapy Month. We are so proud of all of the wonderful occupational therapists we have on staff at KidsCare Therapy! Their discipline and dedication to their patients make it a pleasure to work with each one of them. In May we celebrated Better Speech and Hearing Month. This was just another opportunity to thank our wonderful speechlanguage pathologists for all of their hard work, and recognize the great impact they make in so many lives in the DFW area on a daily basis. In addition, May was the host to National Nurses Week, where we recognized the four wonderful nurses we have on staff for all of their dedication and the knowledge they bring to the team. Thank you so much to all of these wonderful staff members who make working at KidsCare Therapy so rewarding! There has been hard work over the past few months from both employees and patients fighting legislative efforts directed at removing funding for patients care. While the end of spring does

not bring closure to this battle we have exciting news that cuts for funding to the services we provide for our patients care should be minimal, if at all. At KidsCare Therapy we feel that this is a strong testament that our voice can be heard by our legislators, and that we can all truly make a difference in shaping the future for our children. While the battle for healthcare of Texas children will continue, the future looks bright for this victory. Thank you so much to everyone who shared in the efforts our hard work is paying off. Please continue to send your legislators letters to support the use of the rainy day funds to solve our current budget crisis. Using this extra funding can help to ensure that education and healthcare for Texas children is not jeopardized. Success Story
When Lindsey was five months old, she was diagnosed with Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC), a condition that limits mobility in nearly every joint and muscle in the body. Her parents first noticed that something was wrong when Lindsey was born, because not only was her face as hard as a rock, but she couldnt close her mouth. It didnt take long to discover that there were other problems. AMC had also affected her tongue, eyes, spine, limbs and mind. There have been over 400 types of AMC diagnosed; unfortunately, Lindsey has one of the most severe cases. She was born with her ribs and spine fused. Her first surgery, at two years old, resulted in three rods in her back and her ribs being manually split. Since then, every six months, shes gone through procedures to have them adjusted. Shes also undergone a tendon releasea painful procedure that tears the tendon so that the limb is permanently bentin her right arm. Currently, Lindseys legs are locked straight and she can get around her house by rolling. As she gets bigger, though, the straight limbs create a mobility problem. Its just a matter of time before she must undergo the surgery in her legs. Lindsey will always struggle with the effects of AMC, but thanks to in-home therapy and nursing service, not only has her quality of life increased drastically, but shes been able to live at home with her family, and after one year of speech, physical and occupational therapy, she has become more active and independent. She has decreased her use of respiratory medications, and the need for gastrointestinal medications has been eliminated. Thanks to one-on-one speech therapy services provided by KidsCare Therapy, Lindsey began sucking through a strawincredible progress for a girl that was once unable to close her mouth. At this rate, not only will she soon be eating orally, but Lindseys doctor says her gastrointestinal tube will come out. The therapists have educated her parents, as well. This education, combined with Lindseys increased facial movement, expression and babbling, have allowed her mother to communicate with her daughter for the first time. She is better able to understand her wants and needs (both personal and medical), and develop an even stronger relationship with her. The possibilities are endless for Ms. Lindsey. It is a blessing each day to be able to communicate so clearly with my daughter - the same daughter that doctors painted such a grim picture of her future, says Lindseys mom. Home health has been a blessing to Lindseys family, as she has progressed more in the past year than in the previous nine years combined. With her recent progress and continued therapy, Lindseys mom knows there is a very positive outlook for her childs future. I never see the things my child cant do. I only imagine what she can, says Lindseys mom. We here at KidsCare Therapy are grateful for the opportunity to continue to see what Lindsey can do - its stories like hers that remind us of why we do what we do!

KCT Sponsoring Special Olympics Bowling Team

KidsCare Therapy is proud to announce we will be sponsoring a Special Olympics bowling team this year! This team has been a long-time goal of our Clinical Management staff, who are now proud to offer our patients and their families another great social outlet. Many of our kids dont have sports recreation as a social outlet because of their disability, says Speech Therapy Clinical Manager Jennifer Morgan. While out in the field treating patients, our therapists have had an overwhelming request for information regarding how they can get involved with Special Olympics. Referring them to the school district used to be our only alternative; however, many of the districts do not participate in this program, leaving the child with no option of involvement. While we are still in the process of selecting patients as participants at this time, we hope to have a full team of 15 to start practicing with in the early fall. The team will be coached by KCT therapists and patient family members and will be practicing around the Garland and Richardson area. Good luck to all the bowlers we cant wait to cheer on the team!

TSHA 2011
From March 3rd through March 5th, KidsCare Therapy was in Houston, Texas, for our fifth annual trip to the Texas Speech-Language Hearing Association Conference. This years theme was Discovery Communicate, Care and Connect, and we were so happy to have the opportunity to connect with so many wonderful students and therapists throughout the state of Texas. Our spin wheel provided entertainment for our booth attendees as they spun for a chance to win gift cards, t-shirts and various other prizes one lucky winner even walked away with an iPad! We had a great trip, and want to send out a special thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth. We look forward to the possibility of working with you in the near future!
