GOSSIES v FIRSTS KELBURN PARK 2.30
GOSSIES VIEW
In March 1991 the First Teams nemesis was born. They say that you should keep your friends close and your enemies closer. Given that the Gossies play both roles to the First team we are kept very close indeed. So close in fact that at some point the Firsts decided that their best way of keeping an eye on the Gossies was to join them in Capital 2. Only one thing to say about that GET OUT, THIS IS OUR SANDPIT!!!
FIRSTS VIEW
The past three seasons have seen five derby matches between the two top teams of the mighty VUWAFC. This weekend sees the sixth (and hopefully final) derby game. The record currently sits at two wins a piece in this series of games, with one draw. While this weekends fixture may be depleted in numbers (I will be surprised if there are 22 players to take the field), the spirit will still be there. For the neutrals, there is the entertaining prospect of Jesse Whitehead possibly squaring up for his third scrap in three years. Look for Jimmy Hardaker bombing forward to even the ledger after his betrayal goal last year as well. Heres hoping there are a few holes in that Gossamer defence! (probably the first time that sentence has even been written)
v
STALLIONS v ACCIES TE WHAEA 5.30
STALLIONS VIEW
Accies fear the Stallions. Sure, they have never lost a game to them, but during their hardest moments of weekly training and intense pre-match drills they wonder what it would be like to be 10-15 years older, but still playing at the top level of Cap 6. They wish they could have their Thursday nights free of training, rock up 10 minutes before the game starts and maybe have a penalty shootout as warm-up. They look to the Stallions' enthusiastic crowd of under 5's and ask: "Who is cheering for me? Who loves the Accies?" No one loves the Accies, not even all those Accies who have requested a Stallions transfer. On Saturday at Te Whaea, the Accies will face their future, and their doom.
ACCIES VIEW
When you think of football rivalries over the years, there are few that have caught the imagination of many. Argentina - Brazil, Barcelona - Real Madrid, Inter and AC Milan. The University Accies vs University Stallions rivalry rightfully sits in that bracket. Since the formation of the Accies in 2010, each clash between these two sides has been a tight tussle (And the Accies have always won). Wherever the Accies have gone, the Stallions have been sure to not be far behind. Some might think the Stallions are destined to be bridesmaids, although I'm sure they would have a different story to tell. Nevertheless, expect a ferocious encounter on Saturday at Te Fire because the Accies don't give an inch, and we'll take your mile! C'MON YOU ACCIES!!!
Front Cover: Nice photo of KP on a fine day put here to prove two things (i) KP can actually look nice and was not always mud and (ii) that were running out of photos for the match programmes. If you have any shots of Vic teams in action, email them to victoriaunivesityfootball@gmail.com so we can add them to the programmes and stop having to use this stock photo every single week from here on...
Honour Roll
A massive round of cancellations last Saturday saw only three Varsity sides play (anyone from the Raiders want to tell us how you got on cause Capital Football dont know?). Still, a big win for the Womens 2nds last week is hopefully followed by some more wins today. With at least seven sides still in the hunt for promotion, theres all to play for at the business end of the season...
