Go Red For Women is the American Heart Associations nationwide movement that celebrates the energy, passion, and power of women to band together and wipe out heart disease. Over 96% of the women in the Go Red Movement have achieved at least one healthy behavior change since joining Go Red. For example, 54% started exercising, 41% lost weight, 72% took the Go Red Heart CheckUp, and 53% had their cholesterol checked. Over 45% of the women in the Go Red Movement have encouraged others to join.

National Movement
Together with our sponsors and supporters, we celebrate the accomplishments of the National Movement to date: 600,000: Individuals enrolled in Go Red For Women. 1 million: Women who know and understand the numbers that are most important to their hearts. $60 million: Amount raised for the cause. 5 billion: Impressions generated. 3.2 billion: Visits to the Go Red For Women Web site. 12,000: Companies that participated in 2009 National Wear Red Day.

Local Movement
At the American Heart Association, we understand that a true movement starts at the local level. Such groundbreaking national success would not be possible without the support generated in communities across the country. Go Red For Women is about joining the fight against heart disease and stroke, the No. 1 and No. 3 killers of women. The good news is that heart disease and stroke are largely preventable. Go Red For Women provides women with the knowledge and tools they need to take positive action to reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke, and protect their heart health. It all starts with making healthy choices. When women learn to care for their hearts, they learn to appreciate their health, and their lives. Weve captured inspiring stories from casting calls across the country about womens experiences with heart disease and the lifesaving choices theyve made. Fellow sponsors, supporters and volunteers joined the American Heart Association at a special VIP premiere at The Paley Center for Media in New York City to preview the Go Red For Women television specials produced by NBC and The Word Network as well as the Go Red Corazn TV special from Univision.

New York City is unique and so are the stories of the many women who are at the Heart of Go Red. Some are survivors of heart disease and some of stroke, some are young and some are young at heart, some Go Red for their families and some for their communities. At the heart of it all, these women are bonded together for a common cause to save the lives of hundreds of thousands of women throughout our great city. In December of 2008 we were lucky enough to bring together a number of women for an inspirational photo shoot to capture the Heart of Go Red in New York City. These women embody the strength, spirit and energy of the Go Red For Women movement right here in our own backyard. These women became the face of our local Go Red campaign for 2009. Luncheon Program
On Friday, February, February 27, 2009, over 800 women attended the New York City Go Red For Women Luncheon at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. The 2009 event marked the tenth anniversary of the luncheon in New York City and raised $800,000 to support Go Red For Women. Before the luncheon began, guests enjoyed a healthy Go Red reception and health screenings. As the luncheon began guests were treated to a musical opening by the Abyssinian Baptist Church Choir, whose beautiful voices and music set the stage for a day of inspiration and hope. Master of Ceremonies Darlene Rodriguez emceed the wonderful program that included a special welcome from Hoda Kotb and an inspirational passion story by heart attack survivor Stephanie Oster. In 2009 the inaugural Jane Chesnutt and Dr. Nieca Goldberg Research Grant was announced to honor the legacy and vision of the founders of the luncheon in New York City. In addition, the Go Red For Women Community Impact Grants were awarded to several non-profit organizations in New York City to educate and empower their community about heart disease and stroke. By funding innovative programs within NYC, the American Heart Association is working towards a healthier and more educated city.

New York City Council Womens Caucus
The American Heart Association coordinated two initiatives in New York City Hall during American Heart Month in celebration of the Go Red for Women movement. A briefing was held on women and heart disease for the New York City Council Womens Caucus. Survivor and Go Red for Women Spokesperson Stephanie Chan shared her personal story, and Dr. Monica Sanchez-Ross gave a presentation on heart disease and associated risk factors. The presentation was followed by policy proposals from our Advocacy Department with support from the Youre the Cure network. In addition, the Womens Caucus presented the American Heart Association with a proclamation from the Council floor, declaring February American Heart Month. The proclamation was accepted by our New York City Go Red for Women spokeswomen: Loraine Morgan, Tisha Dixon-Williams, and Stephanie Chan. They shared their personal stories with the Council during the presentation and helped to raise Council Members awareness that women are at risk.

New York State Lobby Day


Volunteers from the American Heart Association created a sea of red as they gathered in Albany on Monday, April 6, 2009 to meet with their elected representatives about legislation they believe will improve the health of all New Yorkers. The American Heart Association advocated for: Calorie labeling legislation requiring chain restaurants in the state to post calories next to food items. New York City and Westchester County currently have menu labeling laws in place. Studies show that when they see calorie choices, people consume 50 fewer calories The Healthy Schools Act, which will provide more healthy food choices in the states schools. The AHA is advocating usage of the school nutrition guidelines put forth by the Alliance for a Healthier Generation, a partnership between the William J. Clinton Foundation and the American Heart Association New York State Regents to consider teaching CPR in schools. Nine hundred people die of sudden cardiac arrest each day in the United States; if CPR is performed, it can double the chances of survival. Some schools include CPR in their health curriculum. CPR can be taught in as little as 30 minutes and The extension of the Good Samaritan law to cover people who use an AED to resuscitate a cardiac arrest victim.

New York Liberty Goes Red


Go Red For Women and the New York Liberty continue to raise awareness about the prevalence of heart disease among women and encourage women to make choices that will help reduce their risk for heart disease. As role models to many young New Yorkers and women around the world, the New York Liberty invite their fans to support the cause by hosting an annual Go Red Night at Madison Square Garden featuring public service announcements, health education information, giveaways and a Go Red For Women registration table.

Heart for Women Act


The HEART for Women Act (Heart disease Education, Analysis and Research, and Treatment for Women Act-HR 1032/S 422) was introduced into Congress on February 12th. The bill will help ensure that heart disease and stroke are more widely recognized and more effectively treated in women and take a multi-pronged approach by raising awareness among women and their health care providers; provide gender and race-specific information for clinicians, researchers, and the public; and improve screening for low-income, uninsured women at risk for heart disease and stroke.

Hearts in the Heights


Hearts in the Heights is a partnership between the American Heart Association and Broadways 2008 Tony-award winner for Best Musical In the Heights. The program combines the excitement of Broadway with the mission of the American Heart Association in an innovative, multichannel promotion anchored around a story that features a central character affected by heart disease. Hearts in the Heights raises awareness of heart health in-theaters and through the media, a leading source of health information for the Hispanic market. Dedicated performances feature a special, post-show speech about the importance of heart health from the cast.

Cultural Health Initiatives


Cultural Health Initiatives promotes health equity for those communities at greatest risk for heart disease and stroke. Our goal is to reduce the disparities and incidence of premature death and disability related to heart disease and stroke by 25% by 2010 in minority communities. This is accomplished through creative programs, awareness cause campaigns, grassroots and strategic partnerships, strong volunteer leadership and foundation support impacting racial/ethnic health disparities.

National Wear Red Day


On Friday, February 6, 2009 nearly 300 companies in New York City joined thousands of men and women, hospitals, businesses, news anchors and legislators across the country by wearing red to show their support for Go Red For Women and the fight against heart disease.

Heart disease kills one woman every minute, but it is largely preventable. We simply have to choose to act.

Landmarks Go Red
The Empire State Building is one of the most notable of all buildings in the New York City skyline, soaring more than a quarter of a mile above bustling New York City streets below.

Throughout the month of February American Heart Month buildings and landmarks in New York City and surrounding boroughs helped shine a light on heart disease. In an effort to raise awareness that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women, the buildings were glowing red. Go Red Casting Call


On Friday, February 6, 2009, the New York City market held their 2009 Go Red Casting Call at Grand Central Station the heart of New York City to coincide with National Wear Red Day and the exterior lighting of the Empire State Building. The American Heart Association was looking for real women of New York City to be the faces and personalities of 20092010 Go Red For Women Campaign, including a chance to appear in a nationally broadcast NBC television special. The women were asked to tell stories of the choices theyve made to live healthy lives and improve their well being, to inspire other real women to do the same.

Participants entered Grand Central on a red carpet lined with red rope and preceded down the corridor to the casting call screening booth. Along the way, participants were encouraged to participate in health screening (courtesy of Merck) and join the Go Red Movement. National spokesperson, Andie MacDowell shared her personal connection to cardiovascular disease as well.

The American Heart Association and Macys have for two years running challenged students at FIT to make a personal stamp on heart disease.

Go Red Competitions
In 2008, FIT students designed a red dress for NBC Today in New York co-anchor Darlene Rodriguez as part of the Go Red for Women awareness campaign. Cameras rolled as Darlene and company announced the names of the ten talented designers on Friday, November 30. The winner, Alyssa Frake, was announced on National Wear Red Day, February 1, 2008 where highlights from the entire competition were shown and the winning dress was unveiled. Darlene Rodriguez wore the winning design on-air. The winning designer won a $5,000 scholarship, while first and second runners-up claimed a $3,500 and a $1,500 scholarship, respectively, from the American Heart Association and Macys. The design inspiration derives from the cells of a healthy heart, said Frake, The dress is designed to be strong, symbolizing a strong heart.

In 2009, FIT students took part in a photography contest that helped to raise awareness for women and heart disease. The winner was chosen by a panel of experts from FIT and was announced on National Wear Red Day, February 6, 2009. Students submitted a 3-photograph project that aimed to bring about inspiration and awareness that heart disease is the No.1 killer of women. The winner, Greg Bakers, photo was featured at the 2009 Go Red for Women Luncheon, in a Macys Go Red store window, and on www.americanheart.org. The winner walked away with a $5,000 scholarship, while first and second runners-up claimed a $3,500 and a $1,500 scholarship, respectively, from the American Heart Association and Macys. 14

Albert Einstein College of Medicine Clinical Research Grant You cant help but notice Nichola Daviss passion when she talks about her American Heart Associationfunded research, which is geared at discovering how low-carbohydrate and low-fat diets affect the heart. You also cant help but notice that the 36-yearold Jamaica native is pretty fit.

A lot of other problems stem from obesity diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease.

Since I do weight loss studies, the No. 1 question I get all the time is, How do you stay in shape? said Dr. Davis with a laugh. The clinical researcher, who works at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in The Bronx (New York), runs whenever she can squeeze it in. Shes lucky in that she loves salads. And, even when she chows down on barbecued spare ribs, she does it in moderation. For her American Heart Association-funded research (Dr. Davis is the recipient of a Founders Affiliate Clinical Research grant), Dr. Daviss goal goes beyond helping patients lose weight. Instead, shes focused on whether particular diets are better/ worse for the heart. Low carbohydrate diets, for example, are high in fat and, as a clinical person, I kept wondering, Well, if its high in fat, what is it doing to your heart even if youre losing weight? Dr. Davis said. And I really couldnt find any data about that, so I didnt know how to counsel my patients. Dr. Daviss interest in studying weight loss and its impact on the body can be traced to the problems obesity causes. A lot of other problems stem from obesity diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, Dr. Davis said. While Dr. Daviss study is currently wrapping up and shes analyzing the results, she can feel good in knowing that she has helped people. People who have lost weight just feel so much better, Dr. Davis said. They start exercising and walking a little bit more. Theyre just feeling really great about themselves. And for many of them, their diabetes control has gotten better. Im hopeful that, with all of these things, the tests on cardiovascular function will show that that really has improved, too.

New York City Community Impact Grant


Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. Healthy Heart Ambassador Program Women ages 1835, specifically African American and Latina in all NYC Funding: $25,000 Mentoring in Medicine, Inc. has recruited and trained approximately 200 pre-health and health professional students to become Healthy Heart Ambassadors and spread information about Go Red for Women throughout their communities. Approximately 50 health professionals who are experts in female cardiovascular health and/or emergency medicine were recruited to educate and supervise the students. These students have been required to volunteer in at least 8 community service events (in locations such as beauty parlors, churches, nightclubs, retail stores, and large venues) or at American Heart Association sponsored events in New York City. The estimated reach of this project is 20,000 individuals. NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene Enhanced Volunteer Blood Pressure Monitoring Program (EVBPM) Women ages 4564 in Harlem, Bronx, Brooklyn Funding: $10,000 The Cardiovascular Disease Prevention and Control Program of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) seeks to reduce and prevent cardiovascular morbidity and mortality, with a commitment to eliminating health disparities, through multi-faceted approaches that promote prevention, improve disease management, ensure the availability of services and programs, and address the risk factors underlying much of cardiovascular disease: high blood pressure, high cholesterol, sedentary lifestyle, obesity, and poor diet. The grant supported the implementation of chronic disease self-management workshops in five faith- and community-based organizations that participate in DOHMHs Keep on Track (KOT) volunteer blood pressure monitoring program, operating in low income communities in Harlem, the Bronx, and Brooklyn. The goal of adding these workshops was to increase blood pressure control among KOT participants. Saint Vincent Catholic Medical Centers/Saint Vincents Hospital Manhattan Education Awareness Campaign at Fulton Housing Projects African American and Hispanic families in Chelsea/Clinton Housing Project in Manhattan Funding: $25,000 The Saint Vincents Hospital Manhattan cardiovascular education program has successfully targeted women from underserved communities within the hospitals service area, particularly Robert Fulton Housing in the Chelsea/Clinton neighborhood. The grant has supported: (1) increased awareness of heart disease and stroke, including its signs, symptoms and risk factors, among women in Robert Fulton Housing by providing outreach and education in this community and (2) blood pressure and cholesterol screenings and risk factor counseling to this community (serving up to 300 people) to identify at-risk population and connect them to care. The Latino Education Project, Inc. Beauty Secrets of the Heart Latina women in Northern Manhattan (Harlem, Washington Heights, Inwood) Funding: $13,000 The Latino Education Projects mission is to improve the lives of people at high risk of diabetes and cardiovascular disease through education and training. The grant supported this organizations initiative entitled, Beauty Secrets of the Heart, which works to form partnerships with local beauty salons in Northern Manhattan and inform them about diabetes, hypertension and their cardiovascular risk. In addition to these education sessions, surveys have been distributed among Latino women to assess cardiovascular risk in this area in order to design future interventions that will contribute to decreased risk. VIP Community Services Heart-to-Heart Project Women in the Bronx Funding: $25,000 The Womens Center, a modality within VIP Community Services, provides a multi-continuum of low to high threshold educational, substance abuse and counseling services to Latina and African-American women in the Bronx community by delivering a one-of a kind holistic human service design. The grant supported a Go Red Community Event with over 125 attendees who obtained educational information on a heart healthy lifestyle and risk factors for cardiovascular disease, specifically for women (presenters included a physician, nutritionist, and women who Go Red). Educational workshops on overall cardiovascular health, nutrition, smoking cessation and stress impact of the cardiovascular system were also conducted. Iris House Healthy Living Community Outreach Program Women in Harlem community Funding: $17,000 The overall goal of the project is to promote a healthier lifestyle and reduce the incidence of cardiovascular disease in the Harlem community in general and in Iris House HLP participants. The grant has supported the following: (1) the Healthy Living Program (HLP), which provides continued intensive monthly nutritional counseling for a second year of a 2-year program (the first year is complete) to 30 HIV+ women, (2) the Healthy Living Community Outreach Program (HLCOP), which provides monthly educational workshops on the benefits of heart healthy living, weight management and healthy nutrition to members of the Harlem community (estimated reach of 300 men and women).

Pain or discomfort in one or both arms, the back, neck, jaw or stomach. Shortness of breath along with, or before, chest discomfort. Other signs such as break out in a cold sweat, nausea or lightheadedness. Stroke Warning Signs Sudden numbness or weakness of the face, arm or leg, especially on the side of the body. Sudden confusion, trouble speaking or understanding. Sudden trouble seeing in one or both eyes. Sudden trouble walking, dizziness, loss of balance or coordination. Sudden severe headache with no known cause.
