Get ready for the fair

The Montcalm County 4-H Fair will take place July 3rd through the 9th at the New Fair Grounds north of Greenville at 8494 Peck Road. However that doesnt mean the fair will have changed a lot for previous fairs. Its kind of like were a longtime community business that has moved into a store front that is four times as big as the previous one, fair board president Pat Schuster said. Were still going to have all of the events we always had, now we can just offer our customers more. Whats new this year? Several more food booths and vendors will be on the grounds. Farm Equipment displays will run the gamut from brand new to antique. All of these are things that couldnt happen at the old grounds because of a lack of space. Favorite annual events such as the Demolition Derby and the Rodeo put on by Brandt Clark will return. The Demolition Derby, which includes a burn out contest started just last year will be Friday evening at 7 p.m. in the grand stand area. The rodeo is Saturday evening, July 9th, at 7 p.m. also. Fair goers will want to the Rodeo earlier however, to hear country singer DeWayne Spaw performs from 6:10 to 6:50 p.m. The week begins with judging for the still exhibits on Saturday, July 2nd. The 4Hers will bring in their cakes, pies, crafts and other projects to be judged, starting at 10 a.m. These exhibits will be housed in a large tent on the fair grounds this year, as the exhibit building hasnt been built yet. 4Her of the year will be announced at 6 p.m. in the covered show arena. This announcement will be followed by the annual 4H Food Auction. 4Her bring replicas of the pies and cakes they had judged earlier in the day and sell them to the highest bidder. The public is invited to come and participate in the food auction. It is an excellent opportunity to take home some delicious food and at the same time help the 4Hers put money away in their college funds. Sunday evening at 6 p.m. brings the annual heavy weight horse pull. The pull is a favorite of area senior citizens. There will be no charge for parking on Sunday, making it the perfect day to come and check out the exhibits for free. Monday, July 4th starts the animal judging. 4Hers will contin-

New business opens in Edmore

FINALLYSOMEONE YOU CAN TRUST YOUR LOVED ONES WITH WHEN YOU NEED A LITTLE TIME AWAYThere is a new business opening July 5th in Edmore. Its called, THE FORUM. A Senior & Adult Day Center. The owners, Matthew and Melinda Lang, are busy getting the building ready and hoping to get the word out about what they offer the community. Melinda will be running the daily operations for now, and is excited about the possibilities. Melinda has worked in nursing homes in the past as a nurses aide and has had many years of experience working with special needs children, and adults. She wanted to put those skills together and offer a place for caregivers in the community to get some help in caring for their parents/ or adult special needs children. Her experience in nursing homes, has given Melinda much insight to the needs of families who find themselves taking on the full time needs of their loved one. The Forum will be a place to come for community activities, such as ice cream socials, group events and in the fall, Melinda will be teaching Zumba exercise classes for seniors and beginners. There are so many exciting activities planned for the Forum. Bingo will not be the only event on the schedule. The Forum will have crafts, art, outings and Wii tournaments, such as bowling, tennis, and golf to name a few. The Forum will have an indoor garden area for reading/relaxing and a mini-spa, where guests can be pampered with a manicure or facial. The Forum offers convenient hours for working caregivers. They will be open from 6am-6pm. Families can use the Forum on a full-time schedule or on a drop off basis. Need a couple of hours to grocery shop?

Have an emergency come up? Have an invitation to have lunch with friends you havent seen in months? Then the Forum is just your place. Finally, someone you can trust your loved ones with when you need a little time awaytheyll take care of your loved ones needs, while you get some needed time! If you are a caregiver for your parents/adult special needs children, you know its a 24/7/365 undertaking you have lovingly taken on. The Forum is here to support you! Melinda has many years of experience caring for others. She is CPR certified, and most importantly, loves seniors and special needs people. Both Matthew and Melinda are available to answer any of your questions and look forward to helping the community meet the growing demands of full-time care giving for their family members. Today when most families need two incomes to get by the cost of nursing homes and/or home care can be too much. There has been much research and prayer about how much to charge for their services. They feel that they have found a price that families can afford. It is really a service to help the community families , that is the main goal, so The Forums costs are very fair when comparing similar area centers. There will be a continental breakfast, a larger meal at noon and a light supper. Snacks and drinks will also be provided. The individual dietary needs of each guest will be considered, with choices available as substitutions. Medications will be monitored, with reminders if needed. Safety will be the number one concern, with the guests being lovingly supervised. Please call the Forum for more information, and to make an appointment for your loved one. 989 287-2998. Matthew and Melinda look forward to helping you, the caregiver, when you need some extra help.

ue showing their animals through Saturday, July 9th. Monday evening at 6p.m is the Natural Horsemanship show. Some people call the event The Horse Whispering Show. The horses are put through an obstacle course with the trainer using only a long lead line and verbal cues to get the horse to go through the obstacles. The carnival will be in place by the evening of Tuesday, July 5th. Ride all day wristbands will be only $10 everyday. The fair board worked out this deal with the carnival as a way to help celebrate the New Fair Grounds.

The Poormans Tractor Pullers from the Cedar Springs area will be in the grand stand Tuesday evening at 7 p.m. It is amazing to see what can be done with a souped up garden tractor. Kids Day games and giveaways start at 10 a.m. Wednesday morning and run through 2 p.m. Dynamite the Clown and a magician will be on hand to entertain the children. Thursday evening brings the annual 4H and FFA Livestock Auction at 5 p.m. Several hundred area businesses and individuals usually attend this annual event to support the hours of work the 4Hers have put into their livestock projects.

The best thing to give to your enemy is forgiveness; to an opponent, tolerance; to a friend, your heart; to your child, a good example; to a father, deference; to your mother, conduct that will make her proud of you; to yourself, respect; to all men, charity.

Keeping kids busy this summer

STATEPOINT MEDIA
Summer is a welcome respite from the hectic days of the school year. Yet no matter how peaceful the long, lazy days of summer can be, parents and teachers know that all play and no learning can make the transition back to school extremely difficult for children. According to the National Campaign for Summer Learning, most students lose more than two months of math skills over the summer. But a break from the academic rigors of the school year doesnt have to mean a learning loss come fall. Parents can take simple steps to encourage their childs learning throughout the summer months. This can be a simple as turning classic summer activities such as learning to swim, outdoor picnics, and family trips to museums into teachable moments. Another option is to enroll children in educational summer camps. When teachers test childrens abilities after summer break, we often see the steepest decline in skills like reading and math, said Megan Riede, senior director of education programs for KinderCare Learning Centers. Fun and engaging summer activities that encourage learning not only help combat summer learning loss, but can positively affect childrens motivation, self-esteem, and confidence. A vast majority of preschool parents (69 percent) choose to send their children to day camps according to the second annual national Summer Fun survey conducted by KinderCare Learning Centers, the nations largest private provider of early childhood education. Here are some other tips parents can use to keep kids minds as sharp: n Turn a grocery store trip into a math lesson by having your child compare prices and tell you the best deal. n Change the classic road trip Are we there yet? question into a challenge by giving the vehicles speed and remaining trip distance, and having your child estimate your arrival time. n Enroll your child in a program that balances interesting and educational content with group play. For example, KinderCare Learning Centers created 12 uniquely themed camps like Scienteriffic and Wilderness 101 that offer a balanced approach to learning and fun. n Make meal and snack preparation a chance to practice reading (recipes) and working with fractions (have older children double or halve a recipe). n Develop a summer reading plan with your child. Make weekly trips to the library and help your child create a list of books to read based on their interests. Parents can find more information about how to give their children a fun, educational summer at www.kindercare.com/camp. Learning doesnt have to be a solo activity. Have your child grab a friend or two and set them up for a summer of exploration. Come fall, they (and their parents and teachers) will thank you. Letting your child include their friends in their reading activities will make it seem less like school and more like fun!

RIVER VALLEY NEWS SHOPPER MONDAY, JULY 4, 2011

We're pleased to present to you this year's Annual Water Quality Report. The purpose of this report is to inform you about the quality water and services we deliver to you every day. Our constant goal is to provide you with a safe and dependable supply of drinking water. Our water source is ground water from glacial material. The Village of Howard City has three operating wells; the primary well is located on North Orton Street in the Village. There are two backup wells located within the Emory Street ball eld. We want you to understand the efforts we make to maintain and improve the system by which you receive your water and steps put forth to protect our valuable water resources. The State performed an assessment of our source water in 2004 (currently looking at update) to determine the susceptibility or the relative potential of contamination. The susceptibility rating is a six-tiered scale from very-low" to" high" based primarily on the geologic sensitivity, water chemistry and contaminants sources. The susceptibility of our source is low for our primary well and moderate for the two backup wells. A copy of the report is available at the Village Ofce. The Village of Howard City routinely monitors for contaminants in your drinking water according to Federal and State laws. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations which limit the amount of certain contaminates in water provided by public water system. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) regulations establish limits for contaminations in bottled water, which must provide the same protection for public health. This table shows the results of our monitoring for the period of January 1st to December 31st, 2010. As water travels over the land or underground, it can pick up substances or contaminants such as microbes, inorganic and organic chemicals, and radioactive substances. All drinking water, including bottled drinking water, may be reasonably expected to contain at least small amounts of some constituents. It's important to remember that the presence of these constituents does not necessarily pose a health risk. Our drinking water meets or exceeds federal and state requirements. In the table below you will nd many terms and abbreviations you might not be familiar with. To help you better understand these terms we've provided the following denitions: Not Detected (ND) - laboratory analysis indicates that the constituent is not present. Parts per million (ppm) or Milligrams per liter (mg/l) - one part per million corresponds to one minute in two years or a single penny in $10,000. Parts per billion (ppb) one part per billion corresponds to one minute in 2,000 years or a single penny in $10,000,000 (10 million). Maximum Contaminant Level - The Maximum Allowed (MCL) is the highest level of a contaminant that is allowed in drinking water. MCLs are set as close to the MCLGs as feasible using the best available treatment technology. Maximum Contaminant Level Goal - The Goal(MCLG) is the level of a contaminant in drinking water below which there is no known or expected risk to health. MCLGs allow for a margin of safety. Turbidity- Having sediment or foreign particles stirred up or suspended; muddy. Running annual average- RAA- Average over 12 month period. Maximum residual disinfectant level MRDL means the highest level of a disinfectant allowed in drinking water. There is convincing evidence that addition of a disinfectant is necessary for control of microbial contaminants. Maximum residual disinfectant level goal- MRDLG means the level of a drinking water disinfectant below, which there is, no known or expected risk to health. MRDLGs do not reect the benets of the use of disinfectants to control microbial contaminants. Total Trihalomethanes TTHM are a byproduct of chlorinating water that contains natural organics. Haloacetic Acids HAA5 are a byproduct of chlorinating water that contains natural organics. Regulatory Action Level - AL The concentration of a contaminant, which, if exceeded, triggers treatment or other requirements, which a water system must follow. The State allows us to monitor for certain contaminants less than once per year because the Concentrations of these contaminants are not expected to vary signicantly from year to year. All of the data is representative of the water quality, but some are more than one year old. The table below represents the most current testing information available. Lead Contaminants If present, elevated levels of lead can cause serious health problems, especially for pregnant women and young children. Lead in drinking water is primarily from materials and components associated with service lines and home plumbing. The Village of Howard City is responsible for providing high quality drinking water, but cannot control the variety of materials used in plumbing components. When your water has been sitting for several hours, you can minimize the potential for lead exposure by ushing your tap for 30 seconds to 2 minutes before using water for drinking or cooking. If you are concerned about lead in your water, you may wish to have your water tested. Information on lead in drinking water, testing methods, and steps you can take to minimize exposure is available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline or at http://www.epa.gov/safewater/lead. ** Regulated at customer tap Unregulated contaminants are those for which the EPA has not established drinking water standards. Monitoring helps EPA to determine where these contaminants occur and whether it needs to regulate those contaminants What does this mean? As you can see by the table, our system had no violations. Were proud that your drinking water meets or exceeds all Federal and State requirements. We have learned through our monitoring and testing that some constituents have been detected. The EPA has determined that your water IS SAFE at these levels. All sources of drinking water are subject to potential contamination by substances that are naturally occurring or man made. These substances can be: Microbial contaminants, such as viruses and bacteria, which may come from sewage treatment plants, septic systems, agricultural livestock operations and wildlife. Inorganic contaminants, such as salts and metals, which can be naturally-occurring or result from urban storm water runoff, industrial or domestic wastewater discharges, oil and gas production, mining or farming. Pesticides and herbicides, which may come from a variety of sources such as agriculture and residential uses. Radioactive contaminants, which are naturally occurring or be the result of oil and gas production and mining activities. Organic chemical contaminants, including synthetic and volatile organic chemicals, which are by-products of industrial processes and petroleum production, and can, also come from gas stations, urban storm water runoff, and septic systems. All drinking water, including bottled water, may reasonably be expected to contain at least small amounts of some contaminants. The presence of contaminants does not necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. More information about contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the Environmental Protection Agencys Safe Drinking Water Hotline at 1-800-426-4791. MCLs are set at very stringent levels. To understand the possible health effects described for many regulated constituents, a person would have to drink 2 liters of water every day at the MCL level for a lifetime to have a one-in-a-million chance of having the described health effect. Some people may be more vulnerable to contaminants in drinking water than the general population. Immune-compromised persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have undergone organ transplants, people with HIV/AIDS or other immune system disorders, some elderly, and infants can be particularly at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their health care providers. EPA/CDC guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by cryptosporidium and other microbiological contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline (800-426-4791). We at the Village of Howard City work around the clock to provide top QUALITY ON TAP. We ask that all our customers help us protect our water sources, which are the heart of our community, our way of life and our childrens future. Because of the age of some of the system we do from time to time experience some turbidity or aesthetic problems with our water, which are totally harmless. We have a ushing program in place to keep this to a minimum. If you do experience brown or milky looking water situation please contact the ofce so we can record the problem, and instruct you on what to do. We continue to improve our system, which is sometimes reected as rate structure adjustments. Thank you for understanding. We encourage public interest and participation in our decisions affecting the communitys drinking water. Regular Village council meetings are held on the 2nd Monday of each month in the Municipal Complex council meeting room at 7:00 PM. The public is welcome. The Village of Howard City employs two state certied operators to whom you may direct any questions. Michael Van Wagner Municipal Services Director or water operators Bill Cornelisse at (231) 937-4311 ext.4. Copies of this report are available at Village of Howard City Municipal Complex at 125 Shaw Street during normal business hours or on the Village web site howardcity.org

Swimmers Ear (Eternal Otitis)

I should have written about this earlier in the summer since we have been seeing many cases per day of this very painful ear infection. This is called Swimmers Ear, but it can happen to people who do not swim. Here are the mechanics of this condition. Water gets into the ear canal. This, in itself, is not actually a problem. Most peoples ear canals slant downward and usually the water drains out easily, but some folks have unusually shaped canals, which contribute to the problem. Sometimes there is an accumulation of wax that holds the water in the canal. Some children will swim for 6-8 hours per day if they have the opportunity. On days when the humidity is very high, the water does not evaporate easily out of the ear canal. Occasionally that beautiful long hair hangs over the ears and also prevents the moisture from evaporating properly. So the bottom line is, the ear canal gets wet and stays wet. This causes the skin to become soft, white, and mushy just like when you have been in the bath tub too long. When the skin gets this way, the natural barrier against infection is lost. Bacteria that are always present on our skins surface can now invade the deeper layers of the skin. This creates a very painful infection and inammation since the skin lies directly over the bone with very little fatty cushion between skin and bone. When we understand how this happens we can see that keeping the ear canals dry is both prevention and treatment. Ear plugs are not recommended since they always leak; they can push wax deeper into the ear canal; and they may injure the skin of the ear canal. Ear candling or ear irrigation may be needed if there is much wax present in the canals. Some people put a few drops of peroxide, vinegar, or alcohol in the canals after swimming or bathing in this humid weather. This improves evaporation and may work, but it can be quite uncomfortable if a lot of inammation is present. The best thing I have found is to use a hair dryer on a low setting, held about a foot away from the ear, blowing warm air into the canal for a minute or so. It helps to lift the external ear up a little, straightening out the canal. There are ear dryers available and some people just use one of those little battery powered hand-held fans to blow air into the canal. Remember to keep the hair back for a few hours after swimming. If the ear gets very painful, a wick and prescription medicine may be needed to control this pesky infection. Silver solution and colloidal silver have been found to work well also for the infection part of this. Remember to also dry the canals 15 to 30 minutes after putting any drops into the canal. It is a must to keep things dry. The diagnosis of external otitis or swimmers ear can be made by touching the external ear or pushing on the ear cartilages. If the ear pain is from a middle ear problem, the external parts are not tender. If the canal is involved, then the outer ear will be very tender to touch. Prevent. Keep the ear canals DRY. I have received my basic shots here at the shelter and unless I am claimed by my old owner, my adoption date is June 24th. Come and meet me and get to know me. ID# 11/06/34.

We have all been there-with a friend or a coworker, possibly even the boss. You have to go somewhere and they want to drive. You open the passenger door and you cant even sit down. You assume there is a seat under the fast food bags, the empty coffee cups, books, papers from work, some old mail, an ice scraper, gum wrappers, kids toys, some CDs and... youre not sure but is that a can of aerosol cheese? Their comment is always the same: Just throw that stuff in the back. Obviously these drivers need help in keeping their cars interior clean. In an extreme case they could start with a shovel, but there are steps we can all heed to take care of the inside of our cars.

Like keeping your home clean, vigilance is the key. Clean out your car once a week. If you

Youre going to have stuff from work and for work. The key here is organization. If you dont have a briefcase or other handled bag, get one. Use folders, binders, manila envelopes... whatever it takes. You may not have time to le everything the moment you get it or need to use it,

Two culprits of a cluttered interior are kids and your job. Your little ones are so cute and sweet, making those adorable comments from the backseat that youll later post on Facebook. But lets face it; most of these little angels can be pigs. Its just part of being a kid, but no less annoying. The best way to keep kids from cluttering the car is by providing a garbage container. Either buy one or have the kids make one by decorating a goodsized canvas bag. (This might even give them a feeling of ownership and a desire to use it.)

spend any time in your car you are going to accumulate stuff during the course of a week. To keep these items from taking over the interior, you can throw them away, organize them in the car or move them out of the car.

Keeping your cars interior clean is a worthwhile endeavor, but you wont be able to keep it spotless all the time. Youll probably nd a French fry between the seat cushions from time to time. However, with a commitment to weekly and monthly upkeep, your car will be ready (without embarrassment) for passengers.

By doing a weekly sweep, youll make monthly cleaning much easier. Once a month, shine the plastic, clean the glass, polish or brush the upholstery and remove any recent stains. When youre done, top off your efforts with a little air freshener.

No matter how hard you try to keep it out, dirt is going to be tracked into your car. So add vacuuming to the schedule. Every week, get rid of the clutter, sweep the oor and shake out the oor mats. If your pet travels with you, your weekly cleaning will include brushing out pet hair.

but make time at the end of the day (or week) to move everything to a designated spot.

By Craig W. Armstrong Its like a mufed squeak followed by a high-pitched bong, and sometimes it just hums. It almost sounds like its humming that old ABBA song... oh, I cant remember the name of it, but it sounds like that. Is this how you explain to your mechanic the noise your vehicle is making? Have you ever used the word galonk? Have you ever imitated a Madagascar hissing cockroach when describing a noise or mentioned anything about what it would sound like if someone squeezed a duck... really hard? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you probably need help conveying troublesome sounds coming from your vehicle. Cars and trucks make lots of sounds; some are normal and some are a denite indication that something is not functioning properly. Most people have a good idea of

Playing Charades With Your Mechanic

Automotive Guide
which sounds are normal and which ones need to be checked out. The important thing is to be as accurate as possible when describing those abnormal noises to your mechanic. Like doctors, mechanics need to have a reasonable and thorough explanation of the patients symptoms; they will rely on you to give them that information. Be able to explain when you hear the noise. Is it at start-up or when you turn off the vehicle, when you are going uphill or around a curve, when youre braking or when the gears shift? Be specic in your explanation. Next describe the location of the sound. Rather than using the terms right or left side of the vehicle, you can avoid confusion by referring to the drivers side and the passengers side. Is the noise coming from the engine, underneath the car, from the rear, around the tires? You may even want to draw a diagram indicating the troublesome spot. Often a mechanic will test-drive your vehicle and listen for sounds so they can accurately diagnose the problem, but how many times have you taken in your car and it wont make the noise or do that thing for the mechanic? The main way to avoid this frustration is to be an expert, prepared witness. Explain any and all known maladies associated with the noise. There may be vibration or leaking uid. Explain where you feel the vibration-in the steering wheel, under your feet, etc. Indicate the location of any leak and the color of the uid if possible. Are there any other noticeable differences in how the vehicle is riding or handling? To repeat: Be thorough and specic in your explanation. Mechanics expect a certain amount of charades from customers (and they probably enjoy them sometimes), but accuracy in your explanation will help them do a better job of repairing your vehicle and getting you back on the road faster.

Automotive Guide
Polish vs. Wax
By Craig W. Armstrong Most of us make a concerted effort to take care of our cars. We get the oil changed and have the tires rotated when were supposed to, and we have a mechanic take a look if it starts pinging or dinging. Most of us even make sure the car is clean, either running it through a car wash or scrubbing it ourselves. But beyond the standard washing, do we ever repair its nish or protect it? Do we wax it or polish it? Do we even know the difference between the two procedures? Waxing a car and polishing a car are two different processes that use two different substances and achieve two different outcomes. Waxing a car is in essence adding a layer of protection. Waxing adds shine to a car and gives it that wet look, but it also protects the car from the elements and ultraviolet light. Waxing also protects the cars color from fading and helps delay oxidation by forming a physical barrier against dirty, corrosive substances. So, what does polishing accomplish? When you polish a car you clean it. Polishing eliminates scratches, rust, dirt and wax. Polishes contain abrasives that actually remove a thin layer of the cars paint. Polishing also brings out the color and Polish usually comes in liquid form but can also be purchased in spray form. Polish can be chemical or abrasive, with abrasive being used more for small areas of rust or scratches. Because polish has the ability to remove a layer of paint, caution is recommended. Be sure to read the application instructions thoroughly or your car could end up with a bare metal nish. So which comes rst, waxing or polishing? Because polish can remove wax, obviously you would wax your car after polishing it. Remember, when you are waxing you are sealing. Youve washed your car, youve polished it (removing rust, scratches and oxidation) and then you wax it to seal in all of your hard work. As you might have already gured out, wax and polish are composed of different elements. Wax comes in two forms, paste and liquid. It can be natural or synthetic, with natural wax containing a large amount of carnauba wax, derived from the carnauba palm. adds shine.
