AGRICULTURAL PROFILE OF REGION 10

GEOGRAPHICAL LOCATION Northern Mindanao is within the grid square of 725 to 1030 North Latitude. It is bounded on the North by Bohol Sea, on the South by Lanao del Sur and North Cotabato; on the West by Zamboanga provinces; and on the East by Agusan Provinces and Davao. Region 10 consists of five provinces: It is composed of the landlocked province of Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental in the West; it comprises Oro, Bukidnon

in the South; Misamis Oriental in the North; the paradise island of Camiguin in the Northeast; 9 cities of Cagayan de Gingoog, El Salvador, Iligan, Malaybalay, Valencia, Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub; a

total of 84 municipalities; 12 Congressional districts, and 2,020 barangays. Bukidnon has vast agricultural resources which are highly suitable for almost all types of crops; it is the regions food basket and primary supplier of raw material for processing in the various agri-industrial centers of the region. Misamis Oriental is the hub and industrial center of the region; is the home to the regional airport, international seaport, first class hotels and variety of agri-based & other manufacturing industries. The island of Camiguin is a place of unspoiled beauty, white sandy beaches, clear mountain springs and waterfalls and rustic old world charm. Misamis Occidental is a place of natural beauty, wetlands, unspoiled forests and rich, fertile soil; it is the base for most of the regions aquaculture industries And lastly Lanao del Norte, the newest province added to the Northern Mindanao Region; it is traversed by several rivers, the most important of which is the Agus River which feeds the Ma. Cristina Falls, a major source of hydroelectric power for the Mindano Grid.

CLIMATE AND TOPOGRAPHY Three Climate types prevail in the different areas of Northern Mindanao: Type IINo dry season with very pronounced maximum rainfall from November to January in the province of Camiguin and Misamis Occidental. Type IIIRelatively dry from November to April and wet during the rest of the year, affecting Misamis Oriental and Central Bukidnon. Type IVRainfall is evenly distributed throughout the year in Northeastern Misamis Oriental and Bukidnon. Region 10 is geologically a combination of plains, mountains, rolling hills, and coastal areas with rich soil, abundant minerals, agriculture, forest and aquaculture resources. The region is strategically located serving as the gateway to and from the rest of Mindanao, linking this resource-rich island to the rest of the country and the world via its relatively modern seaport, airports and an extensive arterial road network. It is located outside the typhoon belt and enjoys a climate that is favorable to agriculture and industrial activities. And lastly the region is blessed with abundant hydro-electric power supply which constitutes the bulk of power available in the Mindanao Grid and still has a lot of hydro electric potentials ready for tapping.

In 2008, Region 10 has a Gross Regional Domestic Product (GRDP) of P71,169,547,000. The Agriculture, Fishery and Forestry (AFF) sectors contributed 31.21% to the GRDP while the Industry Service sectors contributed 30.31% and 38.48% respectively.
The AFF provided the highest contribution to the growth of the region in 2008. It provided 3.2 percentage points to the total 5.3 percent growth rate of the region. The industry and service subsectors each provided 1.3 percentage points and 0.9 percentage point, respectively. Among the subsectors, agriculture and fishery was the major contributor to the regions economic expansion, providing 3.2 percentage points of the regions total.

For 2008, white corn figures show that there was an increase in average productivity of 1.91 MT and yellow corn slight decrease of 4.05 MT in contrast to 2007.

For 2008,

goat production posted an increase of 25.62 percent; while hog recorded an increase of 5.54 percent , cattle with 2.85 percent

increase, carabao with 2.68 percent increase and chicken production increase by 10.28 percent. However, duck production registered a decrease of 3.27 percent as compared to 2007.
