Data Sources and Methodology


2010 Summer Meals Served: Explanation: The number of breakfasts, snacks, lunches, and suppers served to children through the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP) and the Seamless Summer Option (SSO). Source: Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Programs Date: Summer 2010 Percent Change from 2009-2010: Explanation: Represents the relative change in total meals served through SFSP and SSO in 2009 compared to total meals served in 2010. Source: Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Services Analysis: Partners for a Hunger-Free Oregon Date: Summer 2009 and Summer 2010 Notes/Assumptions: Summer 2009 data has been updated from the original 2009 Oregon Summer Food Participation Report (original report published in March 2010). Several meal sites had been assigned to an incorrect county in the Oregon Department of Education data fields, therefore previously misrepresenting where in the state some meals were served. Some changes in meals served by county can be explained by this update. Additionally, some sponsors made late adjustments to their meal claims, further affecting the total number of meals served in Oregon. Average Daily Participation: Explanation: The estimated average number of children receiving a meal each day through SFSP or SSO throughout each county. Source: Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Services Date: Summer 2010 Notes/Assumptions: Average Daily Participation (ADP) is calculated for each site based on the meal service during which the most meals are served (only one meal service, usually lunch, is included in calculation so that children who eat a snack and lunch are not duplicated). Since ADP is based on meal counts, it is only an estimate of number of children served. Site ADP Calculation = Meals Served/Total Serving Days County ADP Calculation = Sum of Site ADP within County State ADP Calculation = Sum of County ADP *Previous reports included duplicated figures by including all meals served at a site (breakfast, snack, lunch, and suppers). Additionally, the county calculation previously relied on the average number of operating days for the county, instead of site level calculations (previous County ADP Calculation = Sum of All Meals Served Throughout County/Countys Average Number of Serving Days). % Eligible that Participate: Explanation: This figure compares the average number of children who eat a meal through the Summer Food Program on a given day to the average number of children who eat a free or reduced priced lunch on a given day during the school year through the National School Lunch Program (NSLP). Source: Oregon Department of Education, Child Nutrition Services Date: 2009 -2010 Academic Year and Summer 2010 Notes/Assumptions: This figure is based on average number of free and reduced priced meals actually eaten daily during the school year. It does not include all children who are eligible for free and reduced price meals. Percent participating in the Summer Food Program is calculated by comparing the county Summer Food Program ADP to NSLP free and reduced price ADP. This provides an approximate indicator of how many children were being served during the summer compared with how many low-income children who ate during the school year. This

does not account for children younger than school age who are eligible to participate in the Summer Food Program. The percent eligible to participate is pulled from a targeted pool of eligible children. % Eligible that Participate = (SFSP and SSO County ADP)/ NSLP free and reduced price lunch County ADP Rank: Explanation: Rank is a county to county comparison based on percent eligible that participate in the Summer Food Program. Average number of serving days for the state = Sum of County Average Number of Serving Days/32 Number of Meal Sites: Explanation: Total number of SFSP and SSO meal sites located in the county. Number of Program Sponsors: Explanation: The total number of SFSP and SSO sponsors recognized by the Department of Education in each county. Federal Funds Brought to County: Explanation: This figure represents the total reimbursements for all meals served through SFSP and SSO sponsors whose main office is within that county. For instance, all sites in Wallowa County are operated by a sponsor that is located in Union County, therefore all meal reimbursements for the Wallowa County sites will be applied to Union County.
