Children of God...
Train a child in the way he should go and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 One Piece: An Analogy (Part 2) By Glen Shady This is the second installment of this series. I am writing this series in which I draw insights into Christianity from a popular (in Japan) animated show called One Piece. This show stars Luffy, a pirate. Even though he is a pirate, which has negative connotations of theft and violence, he actually does not conform to this mold as he cares about people and helps them. Luffy does have an ultimate goal within this show, though, and it is not just to explore the seas. Since the death of Gold Roger (former King of the Pirates), pirates have been looking for Rogers treasure and trying to amass the same kind of power that he had. Ultimately nobody has replaced Roger as King of the Pirates, but Luffy is convinced that he is the one that is going to do so. So Luffys goal is to be King of the Pirates. To accomplish this goal, Luffy must continually put himself in danger as others challenge his rise to such a position. This is where we can learn from Luffy once again. Whenever he gets himself into a situation that is dangerous his friends will either ask him to retreat or his enemy will taunt him and ask if he is scared. Luffy never backs down, and he simply states, I have decided to do this, so I will go for it until the point of death. If I die trying, I will die happy. Is this not the mentality that we should have as we live out the Great Commission? I have decided to follow Jesus and he has told me to reach and disciple others, so I will do so even to the point of death. If I die for Jesus, I die happy. With this kind of resolve, surely the world could not resist the love of God given with such passion. Luckily many of you do not have to worry about dying for Jesus, but you still worry about looking like a fool or being challenged if you bring up God. With Jesus on your side, fear not! Finally, because Luffy goes about his life so passionately, people are continually drawn to him and inspired by him. They want to have a goal that is as important to them as Luffys is to himself. He may only be a rookie pirate, a small fish in a large sea, but he makes waves that affect everyone due to his total willingness to sacrifice himself for his goal. I do not think that as we look at someone like Stephen in scripture, who had this same willingness, we should think that this is any different in the kingdom. Maybe you feel small, like a rookie pirate, but if you are willing to die for Jesus, there is nothing that God cannot do through you.
