GUIDED HISTORY HIKES at Saratoga National Historical Park Join one, or all of a series of two-hour guided walks at 9:00am on selected Wednesday and Friday mornings at Saratoga National Historical Park, located on Route 32 and 4 in Stillwater. Participants should be able to walk at least two miles over uneven ground. Please meet at the Visitor Center, and bring insect repellant and drinking water. The hikes are free, but entrance to the Battlefield is $5 per car, or a one-year pass is available for $10. In reality, theyre planning on dismantling Obamacare which is NOT the end all/be all of health care reform. Its a thrown together mismash of thousands of pages of rules, regulation, legalese that nobody understands. The Dems are acting like its the bible. I wish the Republicans would start to talk more about what they envision health care reform to look like. Instead of the Dems defining the issue. Heres what Id like to see: 1) Buying insurance across state lines. We buy everything else across state lines including utilities, so why not insurance. Lets get some estimates of how increasing competition between all providers of health insurance would affect the price. 2) Full tort and limited liability versions of same where you can opt to take insurance that caps awards for pain and suffering at a set amount and pay less than somebody who wants no limits. 3) Tort reform. We need to come up with common sense rules about how much money goes to the ambulance chasing lawyers. I think review boards can look at claims to determine whether theres sufficient evidence to proceed to trial. This will eliminate the frivolous law suits that clog the system. Like a Grand Jury, the review board can take testimony, review medical records and act as a mediation board to settling claims without getting high fee lawyers involved. It would benefit doctors by lowering their insurance premiums and benefit patients buy giving them more reward money than they see after lawyers take their obscene cuts. 4) Fast track new drugs and allow more medications to be sold over the counter. Theres no reason for doctors to get involved in prescribing meds that the patient is familiar with, has taken before for the same condition, or have little or no side effects when taken properly. In many other countries pharmacists can dispense many meds based upon a patients health history. Theres no reason for the FDA to take years to approve a drug that being successfully used in another country. They add so much to the cost of bringing a drug to market by endless studies and peer reviews. I think it should be done by classification. Some drugs are more dangerous than others and should be studied more. But if a medicine had been developed in the U.K. or France and has been used with good results then the FDA needs to fast track it here. 5) Less expensive Urgent Care Centers should be built. Unless its a true emergency that is life threatening, most medical problems seen in the ER can be addressed at the Uri-Care level. Nurse practitioners cost less than doctors and could handle 50% of the cases in the ER. Doctors should be reserved for more severe conditions. 6) People should carry medical ID cards with them like drivers licenses. It shows their picture and contains a memory chip that contains all of their medical records, including doctor names, test results, medications, etc. That way, if a person is unconscious the EMT can simply swipe their ID card in a reader and see everything they need to know. It prevents mistakes and allows more efficient treatment. This card should be handed to the office receptionist at the doctors office. Any new info is added to the card and is updated to a central data repository. Saves time, paperwork and expense. No more filling out endless forms for each doctor. If its lost a new one can be issued for a few dollars much like a credit card. If banks can handle financial transactions with everyones credit and debit cards, theres no reason why health professionals cannot be wired to accept and update medical ID cards. Are thses steps just too practical? I wonder.

THE SECOND ANNUAL GOLF TOURNAMENT TO BENEFIT THE SALEM AREA VAN ENDEAVOR (SAVE) will be held on August 13 at the Ondawa Greens Golf Course. Cosponsored by the Salem Rotary Club and the Salem Area Chamber of Commerce, the tournament will offer two tee times: 8:00 am followed by lunch at noon; or 1:00 pm with dinner at 5:00 pm. The cost is $50 per person which includes either lunch or dinner. Lunch or dinner tickets alone are $20. Prizes will be awarded. Space is limited, and participants are encouraged to register early. SAVE is a community service providing transportation for Salem Area senior citizens and others without transportation to grocery shops and to other local destinations at no charge. COUNTY YOUTH HAVE THE CHANCE TO DISPLAY PROJECTS, ACTIVITIES, AND TALENTS! Warren County Youth, 5 to 19 years of age, are invited to exhibit items they have made in school, in Scouts, or just did for fun at the 2011 Warren County Youth Fair on Saturday, August 6th. All youth have the opportunity to earn ribbons. In addition, youth 5 to 19 years of age have the opportunity to earn cash premium awards from the New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets for their work. Exhibit categories range from creative arts, photography, clothing and textile projects, to pets, food, natural resources, vegetable gardening, horticulture, and mechanical sciences. All projects are subject to the rules for specific departments and fair books are currently available free of charge at the Cornell University Cooperative Extension office during office hours of 8:30AM to 4:30PM Monday through Thursday. Judging Day for the exhibits is scheduled for Friday, August 5 from 1:00 pm to 8:00 pm at the fairgrounds on Schroon River Road in Warrensburg. The youth and their exhibits are judged face to face based on the capability of the youngster, and not by comparing one youngster and/or exhibit against another (referred to as the Danish system; this allows for more than one placement at each level). Some exhibits will be selected to go to the New York State Fair in Syracuse. The judging experience helps youth gain appreciation of workmanship and helps improve their skills, techniques, and confidence. The exhibits must be displayed for public viewing on Saturday, August 6th from 10:00AM to 2:00PM at the fairgrounds. A youth talent show is scheduled for Saturday, August 6th. The talent show is divided into two divisions; the mini (ages 3-12) and maxi (ages 13-21) and are scheduled for 11AM and 1PM respectively. The talent show is guided by NYS Fair guidelines and the top winners have the option of attending the NYS Fair Talent Show. Exhibit entries are due to the CCE office by July 15th. July 15, 2011 PLAN AN ENRICHING SUMMER FOR YOUR CHILDREN Still Time to Register for 2011 Summer Program at Youth Center The Hoosick Area Youth Center & Community Coalition (HAYC3) is planning an exciting series of enrichment programs this summer. Open to children in Kindergarten through 6th grade, the series includes art experiences, games, recreation, learning opportunities, and snacks centered on the weekly themes. Space for each program is limited and registration is open to members and non-members. Children from communities outside Hoosick are welcome to attend. The 2011 themes include: H-2-Ohhhhh (July 11-15) Fun and games to beat the heat! Puppet Studio & Stage (July 25-29) Create puppets large and small and then perform! Fun & Folksy Art (August 8-12) Exploration of art from different cultures. Top Chef for Kids (August 22-26) Get creative in the kitchen! Children can register for all four programs or can pick and choose from the themes. Some programs fill up faster than others, so do not delay in registering. Each program runs from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday to Friday. Aftercare is provided until 6 p.m. if needed for an additional fee. Children should dress to mess and bring their own lunch. Snacks will be provided. On particularly hot days, a change of clothing and a water bottle are suggested. Each enrichment program ends with a free celebration to which parents and friends are invited. The celebration allows participants to demonstrate what they have learned throughout the week. AN ARCHAEOLOGY EXPERIENCE- The Saratoga County Historical Society, is very excited to announce that registrations are now being accepted for Brookside Digs: An Archeology Experience at Brookside July 25 through July 29. Students in grades 5-8 (ages 10-14), will dig into local history, uncovering buried artifacts from Brooksides historic site in Ballston Spa.
