Novel
From Louis Braille Novel
By Margaret Davidson
Amount of page: 80 pages
Summary:
Louis Braille was born in a small town called Coupvrayn on 4 January 1809. One day
he went into his father's workshop to play. He picked up an awl, a sharp, pointed tool used for
making holes in leather. He played other tools and suddenly it jumped and plunged into his
eye. And finally he became blind. A man called Father Palluy who was a priest met Louis and
asked Louis to go to school in The Royal Institute of Blind Youth in Paris in 1819. That was
the school special for blind and the blinds could still learn same as the normals’. In his first
day was very noisy and to many people but he tried to adapt. In the night he couldn’t sleep
and finally he cried. A boy named Gabriel Gauther came to him and made him calm down.
He was Louis’ first friend. In 1820 there was a way for blinds to read called raised dots. Louis
learned it but it was hard because so many letters that were similar. In 1821 there was “night
writing” used for soldiers created by Captain Barber. It used raised dot. Louise learned it, too.
At the point, he realized that it couldn’t work well because there was no punctuation. Finally
he decided to meet Captain and told him about his ideas to found other way to blind to read.
But Captain didn’t like his idea because not only Captain was a proud man; he also didn’t
want to listen to idea from a half grown child. One day he had much went home to vocation.
He had so much free time and he decided to use his time to work in ideas. He spent so much
time to work on it, include his sleep time in the night and his eat time. Three years past and
finally he found the solution for his problem all this time. His dots were much better than
Captain’s because his’ were used dots that stood for letters of alphabet instead. After he
finished his dots he went to school. In school he told boys about his dots and every boy loved
it. Soon the direction of his school named Dr. Pignier heard about his dots and called Louis.
Louis demonstrated his dots by: Dr. Pignier read a story and Louis rewrite it in form of his
dots then Louis read the story according to his dots and the story that Louis read same as the
Dr. Pignier’s story. And he thought Louis’ dots were very smart because for hundred years
people have been searching and it was found by Louis, a 15 years boy. Louis told director
about his idea to make book by his dots then director tried to sent letters to many important
people but they answered “no”. Year by year past and nothing much happened to the dots.
Finally Louis graduated from the Institute in nineteen years old and director asked him to be a
teacher and Louis accepted it. He was a smart, kind, and patient teacher. He was played piano
very well. He was working on a way to make pattern of dots stand for musical notes and he
spent much time for it. He worked until his back ached and his fingers stiff and sore. And he
thought a good slept can make he better. But day by day past and he became worse and
worse. He could climb a flight of stairs with stopping to rest, his voice was so weak, he got
fever, his body felt like shake with chills, and he also got cough. He got worse day by day.
Doctor came and he said Louis got tuberculosis, a disease of lungs. He slept long hours each
day and ate everything in front of him. As soon he grew stronger and stronger but not strong
enough. Finally, he could make a small book called “Method of Writing Words, Music, and
Plain-song by Means of Dots for Used by the Blind and Arranged by Them. In 1841 Dr.
Pignier left Institute and a new man named Dr. Dufau took his place. He was “strong” and
cold man. He didn’t like anything new or different even Louis’ dots so he didn’t allow boys
used dots even in their houses so he burned it all. So many teachers agreed with Dr. Dufau
but there was a teacher didn’t agreed so he helped Louis to tell with director and finally
director allowed boys to used Louis’ dots. In 1844 Institute moved and Dr. Dufau planned
opening ceremonies and the best part was explanation about Louis’ dots. Everyone was
waiting for it and finally it came. Dr. Dufau read a story and a girl beside him rewrote it in
Louis’ dots form. After that, he spoke the words back. Someone yelled it was a trick so to
prove the truthiness’ Dr. Dufau called up two blinds and called an audience to do the same as
Dr. Dufau did before but with different story. Then they spoke the words back loudly and
cohe had been close to death. On January 6, 1852, he died. After thirty years he died, every
school for the blind in Europe had changed to Louis’ dots.
My comment:
From that story I can learn that everything needs process. Not everything that we want
we get it. By hard work and believe in God we can get it if God allows it happen. So keep
hard work to get what you want. Do the best in all things and we will get the best result, too.
If a blind like Louis could make a big changes in this world, why we as normal human who
have extra talent to see can’t do it more. I believe I can do more in my life, so everyone
around me can be blessed of me.

A tourist comes to Bali with a tour guide. The guider carries the tourist to a place to
see cremation ceremony. The tourist sees that ceremony proudly. He never sees that before, in
just three hours can burn a body corpse. In his country there is no that such ceremony. After
that the guider carries him to other places but in their way they meet a woman who toothless
and she holds out her hand. The tourist feels pity on her. He picks out money from his pocket
and gives it to her. The woman says thank you and leaves. The tourist says to his guider that
he can learn many things from that experience along that day.
Vocabulary lists:
a. Murky: dark
Bats usually fly in the murky.

My comment:
I think the cremation that people usually do is sometimes useful, too. Because they do
not spend too much land for their funeral so people in Bali can save their lands for them open
or build others building such as houses, stores, or gardens. If the corpse do not cremated and
need to be buried beside their family has to spend their time to visit the funeral to such give
pray, them also need to spend their time. So I think cremation is better than buried. We can
have the ash and keep it.

and elephants. The scenery is very beautiful. The animals are walking, eating, sleeping, to

In Indonesia wildebeests very hard to found.
My comment:
We as God’s creation have to keep this world. From that article we can learn that
everything that God gives to us is great and the best. He gives us everything that we need
especially for this world. Sometimes we do not thank God with all that God gives to us, we
just can gripe to God, why it can be like this and like that. Honestly, I also ever think like that
but after I rethink it, God loves me and He will give all the best to me. So just thank God for
everything and your life will be better.

My comment:
Everything in this life is good. So I think we have to memorize everything that happen
in our life, not only the good memorized or experiences but also the bad one. So by that we
can know everything that we done that we think its good can be really good for ourselves and
others. We also can be blessing for others.

Title: Saudi judge OKs killing of TV network owners
Summary:
Saudi Arabia’s top judiciary official has issued a religious decree saying it is
permissible to kill the owners of satellite TV networks that broadcast immoral content. The
channel causes the “deviance of thousands of people”. Many of the most popular Arab
satellite networks which include channels showing music videos often denounced as obscene
by Muslim conservatives.
Vocabulary list:
a. Broadcast: to let anyone knows, to share information to others.
Radio broadcast about the situation on the Pemuda Street.
My comment:
The death is in God’s hand, everything is managed by God and we as human do not
allow judging the death of others like that. Beside in Ten Commandments already written that
we do not allow to kill others, so we can’t. If we still kill others we who get sin, not others.
Even though they’re wrong we still have to forgive them, God teaches us to forgive others not
killing others. Maybe for the punishment, we can give them the punishment that equal with
what they have done, but not killing, because ourselves also do not want if we are killed
because of our mistakes and we want to be forgive, and we also have to forgive others. So,
better if the owner of television channel is given punishment for example he/she does not
allow to spread his/her channel anymore or gives him/her fine or he/she has to be prison for
years. That’s more equal for his/her mistakes than has to be killed.

They still care with natural disaster’s victim even the country sometimes not as care as WHO.
In this era, still there is such organization, of course that organization need many people, that
means even though this world become “worse and more evil” but God still send His “son” to
let this world become not too evil and come back like in the past when everyone still kind.
So, thanks to God and to WHO because stay still care the victims.

Title: Medan to host Asian basketball event
Summary:
Indonesia will host the 19th FIBA Asia Women's Basketball Championship in Medan,
South Sumatra, from Nov. 2 to 9. The national basketball association announced in Jakarta.
The tournament will feature 12 teams and them desperate into two groups of different levels.
China, Japan, Korea, Chinese Taipei, Malaysia and India are in Level 1. Thailand, the
Philippines, Singapore, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan and Indonesia are in Level 2. Noviantika
Nasution, an Indonesian Basketball Association official, said she expected Indonesia would
be promoted to Level 1 at the end of the event. She also said that in the 2006 tournament,
Indonesia was ranked fourth in Level 2 and she was very hope in this year's event, Indonesia
can get rank in second place to get the promotion to Level 1.
My comment:
Everyone has goals and as big as his/her goals, as big his/her challenges that he/she
will get. The focus is on how to make it successful. In this case, the goal of Indonesia is to get
the second rank in Level 1, so I think the way to make it real are: we have to make
Indonesian team become stronger so our chance to win with our adversary is bigger. Second,
we have to look again how our adversary play and from there we can now their strategy so
we can manage our defend strategy perfectly. The third, play with all of your heart and never
play will high emotion because it can make the players’ concentration gone. Forth, from the
players’ selves, they have to prepare their fettle. And the last one, we have to remember, hard
work without pray is nothing.

Title: Jakarta marks car free day
Summary:
Jakarta started international car free day and it will be do monthly. There were some
road open only for bicycles and other sporting activities. According to the people in there, a
man said he was happy with that activity so the earth also can breathe. Besides, they also plan
some trees to less the amount of carbon dioxide.
My comment:
As we know nowadays the issue about global warming is booming. I agree with that.
Now our Earth is getting worse and worse. The UV light protection is less each day. We
cannot stop it but we can prevent it so it happens longer. Start to planting trees and starting
international car free activity are good starting. But, we also need to do others such we do it
monthly, we do car free day not only in Jakarta but also in every city in Indonesia, then we
also need to replant our forest that already approximately gone. But the most important thing
of all is self-awareness. We have to start it from ourselves then we can ask others to do the
same like what we have done. From us to others, it’s good. Because it can make a big change
for our Earth. What we do now we can look the result for the future. So if in the future we
still want to breathe a fresh air we need to start it from now.
