    Stories stir our emotions, open our imagination and may even inspire us to greatness. At its very essence storytelling is simply the conveying of ideas or events in words, images, and sounds. And throughout the course of history stories, or narratives, have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, and cultural preservation—in order to instill values and beliefs. This presentation explores the power of stories and how they can be leveraged by brands, companies and nonprofits. We begin by examining To Write Love on Her Arms (TWLOHA) a nonprofit aimed at helping high risk young people combat depression that has been driven by storytelling. Jamie Tworkowski, the founder, began the nonprofit with a story and by shedding light on such a difficult subject it has allowed others to share their stories (inspired artwork on deviantART). When asked what keeps them going, Jamie said "[w]e hear stories of people stepping into counseling or stepping into treatment ... beginning to feel less alone because of it." Stories Then we examine the ways in which stories are: meaningful, enjoyable, empowering and sociable. By understanding these simple concepts, we begin to understand that storytelling is no longer the province of media companies. Everyone has the power to their stories, especially with the proliferation of social media tools. These tools are even capable of sharing stories across platforms (transmedia storytelling). However, in the end, storytelling comes down to two things: connection and engagement.     Thats what keeps us going, and thats what is encouraging. We hear stories of people stepping into counseling or stepping into treatment and people calling a crisis hotline or suicide hotline or just people getting into a community and beginning to feel less alone because of it. Theres a certain stigma that keeps people from taking those steps so were more than anything just trying to encourage, invite and challenge people to take that rst step.

    I dont want to be coy or some type of jerk or be withholdingits not a Machiavellian sort of thingits literally wanting people to have a good time and to have a little bit of a surprising time, [J.J.     In the end, storytelling comes down to two things: connection and engagement. Whether its a shaman relaying his vision around a sacred re, a tribal elder handing down his peoples oral history, or a marketer pushing his or her newest line extension or service, it all comes down to these two fundamental elements.
