Tending the Garden of Your Soul Community Art Project

11:00 AM July 24 & 31 Led by Amanda Hunter What does tending the garden of your soul LOOK like? What are symbols, images, words that you would use to tell people about it? Join in this fun project to paint a community worship table cloth that illuminates our summer theme. At the end of the project the cloth will be divided between our Sanctuary, Sacred Journey and Many Voices services. Stop by tables in the East Entrance, add your art to the mix!

Tending the Garden of Your Soul

Nothing in your life is so insignicant, so small, that God cannot be found at its centre.
Mother Frances Dominica

BIBLE STUDY: THE GOSPEL OF JOHN

SUNDAYS THROUGH AUGUST 21 11:00 AM LED BY BRUCE ROBBINS For some, Johns gospel is a weighty theological tome; for others it is the essence of Christianity, full of signs and glories. Each weeks study will be independent of others. People are welcome to come and go as they please. Bring a Bible!

Find one small thing in your life a ower that you see blooming in your yard; a freckle on your arm; even a gurative thorn in your side and spend ve minutes each day examining it and thanking God for the miracle of that small thing.

Health Events Reminder

Come walk or bike with us for an hour on Saturday July 30 beginning at 9:45 AM. Also, plan to journey through the Energy Healing Practices Health Fair on Sunday, July 31 in the Art Gallery from 10:30 AM 12:00 noon.

ENTRY INTO CELEBRATION O God who called all life into being, the earth, sea, and sky are yours. Your presence is all around us; every atom is full of your energy. Your Spirit enlivens all who walk the earth; with her we yearn for justice to be done, for creation to be freed from bondage, for the hungry to be fed, for captives to be released, for your kin-dom of peace to come on earth.

+ MORNING PRAYER (by Janet Morley)

God whose holy name dees our denition but whose will is known in the freeing of the oppressed: Make us to be one with all who cry for justice; that we who speak your praise may struggle for your truth. Through Jesus Christ we pray, Amen. ANTHEM WELCOME TIME WITH THE CHILDREN

SACRAMENT OF BAPTISM CELEBRATION OF NEW MEMBERS

CONGREGATIONAL WELCOME We give thanks for all that God has already given you and welcome you in Christian love. As members together with you in the body of Christ and at Hennepin Avenue United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant to participate in the ministries of the church by our prayers, presence, gifts, service, and witness, that in everything God may be gloried. Today we commit with you to live our lives after the example of Christ and to surround you with the love of God. May you be established in your faith and strengthened to live in the way that leads to life eternal.

+ THE SHARING OF THE PEACE

The peace of God be with you. And also with you. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION Bless the Lord
We are now in the Season after Pentecost, what we often refer to as Ordinary Time and so we enter into our theme: Tending the Garden of Your Soul, recognizing that most of our tending needs to be during those ordinary times. We live most of our lives in ordinary time, dont we? And yet the miracle of our lives is anything but ordinary. It is in our every day living that we practice loving our neighbors, ourselves, and our God. How do you tend to your soul? How is your garden growing?

SCRIPTURE READING PSALM 139:1-12, 23-24 WITNESS

Linda Wilkins, lector Hymnal, page 854 Dave Amos

+ LUKE 11:1-13
Jesus was praying in a certain place, and after he had nished, one of his disciples said to him, Lord, teach us to pray, as John taught his disciples. He said to them, When you pray, say: Father, hallowed be your name. Your kingdom come. Give us each day our daily bread. And forgive us our sins, for we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us. And do not bring us to the time of trial.

And he said to them, Suppose one of you has a friend, and you go to him at midnight and say to him, Friend, lend me three loaves of bread; for a friend of mine has arrived, and I have nothing to set before him. And he answers from within, Do not bother me; the door has already been locked, and my children are with me in bed; I cannot get up and give you anything. I tell you, even though he will not get up and give him anything because he is his friend, at least because of his persistence he will get up and give him whatever he needs.

So I say to you, Ask, and it will be given to you; search, and you will nd; knock, and the door will be opened for you. For everyone who asks receives, and everyone who searches nds, and for everyone who knocks, the door will be opened. Is there anyone among you who, if your child asks for a sh, will give a snake instead of a sh? Or if the child asks for an egg, will give a scorpion? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will the Holy One give the Holy Spirit to those who ask for it!

Leah Rosso

INVITATION TO GIVE OUR OFFERINGS AND OURSELVES Holy One, we often pray for our deepest dreams, not fully recognizing that together we can, with your blessing, put them into action. Help us to see that this time in our worship can be fruitful if we all give what we can to make your dreams come true. Amen. MUSICAL OFFERING What Gifts Can We Bring? Jane Marshall

+ PRESENTATION OF TITHES AND OFFERINGS + PRAYER OF DEDICATION

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE THE LORDS PRAYER Our God, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kindom come; thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil, for thine is the kindom, the power, and the glory forever. Choral Amen
