2008 GUIDE TO SERVICES FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE HOMELESS

INTRODUCTION
In this, our third annual Guide to Services, Shelter, Support and Housing Administration is expanding the range of listings as part of our ongoing efforts to assist people who are homeless find housing. Included are lists of shelters, housing help centres and services to help meet immediate needs. If the information you are looking for is not in this guide, please contact the Assessment and Referral Centre, 211 or Street Helpline for additional assistance and/or referrals. Because the focus of much of our work in 2008 is to help people find and keep housing, we will be issuing shortly our first Guide to Services for people who are housed. This will help anyone who is looking for programs and services in their own community. Please note that at time of printing, important details concerning some programs were not available. Our website version of the guide is updated regularly at www.toronto.ca/housing.

EXTREME WEATHER PLANS

Extreme winter weather is especially difficult for homeless people, while the extreme heat of summer is hard on just about everyone.

Artwork by participants at the Adelaide Resource Centre for Women.

Cold Weather Plan Because homeless people tend to spend a lot of time outside, extremely cold weather can be deadly. This is why the Director of Hostel Services has the authority to call an Extreme Cold Weather Alert when Environment Canada predicts weather conditions that threaten the health of those sleeping outside. The Alert triggers a range of additonal services, including additional shelter beds, a relaxing of shelter standards, distribution of TTC tokens through several drop-ins to assist people to reach shelter, and additional overnight outreach service. Throughout the winter, selected drop-in centres get additional funding to extend their hours so that there are always warm places for people to go. Extended hours are listed in the drop-in brochure on page 7. Detailed information is updated at www.toronto.ca/housing.

Hot Weather Plan During the summer, the Medical Officer of Health may call a heat or extreme heat alert. This activates additional services, some specifically targeted at homeless people and those living in housing where it gets very hot. In addition to extended hours in some air-conditioned drop-in centres throughout the summer, the City also opens cooling centres during an extreme heat alert for anyone requiring a break from the heat. The hot weather plan is in effect May 15 to September 15 and detailed and current information about additional services available to people who are homeless, including extended drop-in hours and locations and hours of cooling centres, is available after May 15 at www.toronto.ca/housing. Follow the links to the hot weather plan.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO HELP

Many generous Torontonians regularly ask how they can help end homelessness, and there are many ways to make a difference. Calling the Street Helpline (1-866-392-3777, free from any pay phone) can help someone access any of the services in this guide. On a cold winter night, it could save a life. There are many other ways to helpvolunteer and/or donate goods or money to agencies assisting homeless people; attend an event in support of front-line agencies; shop at establishments that provide training and mentoring to homeless people. Weve got more suggestions on our website (www.toronto.ca/housing), but if you are reading this guide, youve started on the most important way to solve homelessness: learning more about it.
