Licensing
Licensing Information
You will receive a license file with (1) new installations of your software, (2) if you have added new licensed options (for instance, AIM or Snapshot), or (3) if you have increased the storage capacity limits in your license. The license file that you receive will have the name "Company_Name_################.lic" where Company_Name is the name of your company and ################ is the license number. The license number is also used as the storage server serial number (or WWN) in SANmelody. Each storage server has a unique license number. For new installations, your SANmelody software will need to be activated; unless it is a Trial License (see below) in which case it cannot be activated. SANmelody software will run for 30 days without activation, after which time the software will stop running. You may activate your permanent license at any time, during, or after the 30-day grace period (in which case, you will be able to re-start your software if it has stopped). Refer to Activating a Permanent License for complete instructions. After activating, the software will run indefinitely. There is no need to re-activate your software if you are upgrading your license. Permanent licenses can be purchased by contacting your DataCore Sales Representative or DataCore Authorized Partner (http://datacore.com/about_datacore/about_sales.asp). Trial License The license file downloaded from the DataCore Web site in order to "Try Now!" and can be used free for 30 days is considered a Trial License. You cannot activate this license and the software will stop after 30 days. If you wish to upgrade your Trial License to a permanent license, contact DataCore Sales and provide your Trial License number so that the same license number can be converted to a permanent license. A Trial License that has been upgraded to a permanent license can then be activated as normal. (See Activating a Permanent License). You will then be able to simply upgrade to your permanent license. Refer to Upgrading a License in the on-line Help for complete instructions. If you do not provide your Trial License number to DataCore Sales, the permanent license will contain a different License Number and you will not be able to upgrade your Trial License and will have to uninstall and reinstall your software and lose your existing configuration.

Licensing

Activating a Permanent License

Your SANmelody software will remain running for a 30-day pre-activation grace period. After 30 days of use, it will cease to run. At any time, before or after the 30 day grace period, you may register your copy of SANmelody. When you enter a valid activation code, it will remove the 30-day grace period timer, allowing your SANmelody software to run indefinitely. These instructions are for activating a permanent SANmelody license. Trial (30-day) licenses cannot be activated. For more information on licensing, refer to Licensing Information. If you are currently using a trial license and wish to purchase and upgrade to a permanent license, you must first contact DataCore Sales or DataCore Authorized Partner at http://datacore.com/about_datacore/about_sales.asp and provide your Trial License number so that the same license number can be converted to a permanent license. If your new license number (storage server serial number or WWN) does not match your trial license number, you will not be able to activate your license contact DataCore Sales to obtain a valid license. After activating your permanent license, you will have to upgrade your license, refer to Upgrading a License for in the on-line Help complete instructions. In order to activate a permanent license, you must be logged on as "The Administrator." After the license has been activated, you can log on to Windows using any local account with administrator privileges. To activate your license: 1. Right-click the DataCore icon in the system tray, and select Activate from the context menu.

2.

The Acquire and Activate SANmelody License box opens displaying the WWN of the storage server and a registration code.

3. 4.

Click Get Code to obtain a unique activation code for the storage server. If the machine you are using has an Internet connection, your browser will open to the online SANmelody Activation site, and you will see the SANmelody Activation Wizard displaying your registration number. Follow the instructions in the wizard.

5.

If your security settings are on high, you may need to add DataCore as a trusted site. If the machine you are using does not have an Internet connection, go to another computer which does and type the URL displayed in this window to gain access to the wizard.

In the wizard, click the Confirm button. You will see a response that displays your activation code. Make note of the code. (The activation code will also be sent to the email address you entered.)

10. Close the Acquire and Activate SANmelody License box. Your permanent SANmelody license has been activated and registered. 11. If you were activating a permanent license that was converted from a trial license, you will need to upgrade your license, refer to Upgrading a License in the on-line Help for more instructions.

Installation
Pre-Install Steps
To ensure a smooth installation, please take a few moments to prepare the systems that will be included in the SAN. This includes reviewing the release notes, ensuring the necessary required software is installed and current, and that you have your user accounts, passwords, and licenses in order. Before beginning the installation:

Physically connect one or both (if licensed for High Availability) storage servers to a network and ensure they are accessible. All network adapter cards, HBAs, hubs, or switches should be in place and operational. Physically connect any storage devices to be managed directly to the storage server or via hub or switch. Ensure your application servers are ready to become members of the SAN:

It is very important to refer to our Technical Support Web site (http://www.datacore.com/index_frame.asp?frame_subnav_content=7) for detailed FAQs about special configuration instructions pertaining to the specific operating system and your high availability products. Perform any configuration necessary for the specific operating system and the software installed. Perform any upgrades or install any service packs to application server operating system software. Physically configure Fibre Channel and iSCSI connections to storage servers. If using iSCSI, install iSCSI Initiator software on application servers. (If using Microsoft iSCSI Initiator software, during installation do not enable the Microsoft MPIO Multipathing Support for iSCSI option even if intending to use MPIO.) Install optional application server software (such as DataCore MPIO, DataCore VSS, AIM Client) on application servers and install any software updates. If licensed for HA, install Multipath Drivers on application servers that will require HA access to mirrored disk resources being provided by the storage servers. Multipath drives can be either DataCore or other high availability drivers (e.g., DataCore AP, DataCore MPIO, or Veritas DMP). Install them using recommended procedures. See the DataCore SANmelody Technical Support Web site (http://datacore.com/index_frame.asp?frame_subnav_content=7) for qualified DataCore products and Application Server High Availability Products.

Read the Release Notes provided with our software for important information. Verify that your storage servers meet the system requirements as defined on our Web site (http://www.datacore.com/products/prod_SANmel_prerequisites.asp). Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 must be installed on the storage servers or the installation will terminate. (This software can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/.) Ensure that the appropriate Microsoft Windows 2008 service packs are installed on storage servers. Refer to the Windows Security Settings Disclosure for a disclosure of the changes to security-related settings which will be made to the Windows operating system during the installation of SANmelody. Choose the computer name of the storage server carefully. Once SANmelody is installed, changing this name will disable SANmelody. Do not use underscores in the computer name. Create a local user account to be used exclusively for SANmelody. This account should be assigned with Administrator privileges and allow the setting of Log On as Service privilege. This account will be used with the Domain Communication Service (DcsSDS). If you are licensed for HA, both storage servers must use the same account name and password. If you have purchased a DataCore Support Plan, please fill out the Support Registration form on the Technical Support Web site (http://www.datacore.com/index_frame.asp?frame_subnav_content=2). Your license number is required to submit the form. After submitting this form, you will receive a logon and password to access the SANmelody Technical Support database and other important product information, and will be able to download any software updates for this product. Review Licensing Information and ensure you have a valid license file. Copy the appropriate license file to the storage servers or make sure that it is accessible via a network. These files are unique to each server. Configurations are governed by license parameters. If using iSCSI:

For Windows Server 2008, Microsoft iSCSI Initiator is included with the operating system and does not need to be installed, but the Microsoft iSCSI Initiator Service must be started in order to mirror over iSCSI because storage servers will act as both initiator and target. (The service can be started from Windows Services. When you start the service, you will receive a

SANmelody Installation Guide

message to unblock the service so it can communicate through the Windows Firewall. Click Yes on the message.) In Microsoft iSCSI Initiator software, do not enable the Microsoft MPIO Multipathing Support for iSCSI option even if you intend to use MPIO.

The installation and configuration of Microsoft iSNS Server software simplifies the configuration of iSCSI channels. If you are planning to use an iSNS server, physically attach the iSNS server to the SAN and install the software. Microsoft iSNS Server software can be downloaded from the Download Center on the Microsoft Web site. Do not use your storage server as an iSNS server.

If licensed for AIM:

TCP/IP connections are required between the AIM source and AIM destination servers. (Only IPV4 addressing is supported.) Transfer Mode Utilities can be either FTP Transfer Mode (FTP) or SMB Transfer Mode (SMB). If using FTP:

The Windows firewall on the server must be configured to allow out-going FTP connections from the AIM source server and incoming FTP connections from the AIM destination server. (Please refer to Microsoft or Internet Information Services (IIS) Websites for more information and instructions on configuring FTP firewall settings.)

Add a server role for Web Server (IIS) with the FTP Publishing Service option on the AIM destination server. If using SMB:

The AIM source server must have the ability to access a defined network share on the AIM destination server.

The AIM destination server must allow incoming LAN connections from the AIM source server from a user defined in the Administrators group. Other configuration steps necessary will be performed after installation, as outlined in the Getting Started with AIM topic in the on-line Help. The Administrator may want to set up another user account for AIM. A new account must have Administrator Privilege (with password) and Log On as Service Privilege set. AIM source and destination servers must use the same account.

If licensed for High Availability (HA):

Warnings:

Requires two storage servers physically connected to each other over a LAN in order to exchange configuration information and exist in a partnership. Both servers must use the same logon account and password. If using Fibre Channel, the servers must have one or more Fibre Channel connections (direct or indirect) between them to facilitate the mirroring of data from one server to the other. If using iSCSI, the servers must have at least one NIC (for iSCSI use) that is connected either directly or indirectly to the other storage server.

Because a local user account cannot be created on a Domain Controller, do not install SANmelody on a Primary Domain or Backup Domain Controller. Do not install SANmelody software on a Microsoft Cluster Node. Do not enable Microsoft MPIO Multipathing Support on the storage server. Do not change the computer name of a storage server after SANmelody software has been installed. Do not use underscores in computer names.

Installation

Windows Security Settings Disclosure

In order to allow DataCore storage servers to communicate and SANmelody to function properly, certain Windows operating system settings are automatically changed during the SANmelody installation. The Windows operating system features that are changed during the installation are the Windows Browser Service and the Windows Firewall Service. The installation only makes the minimum Windows security changes required. Although security settings are changed, they are never disabled. Following are the specific changes performed during installation: 1. 2. 3. 4. The Windows Browser Service is set to Automatic in order for the storage servers to acknowledge and communicate. The File and Print Share Service is turned on. Allow the DataCore Storage Domain Service to run under the firewall. Open the TCP port 3793 for DataCore Storage Domain Service to enable communications between storage servers.

Do not manually disable or reconfigure the firewall.

SANmelody Installation Guide

Installing SANmelody
This section provides instructions for installing DataCore SANmelody Disk Server Software on storage servers. SANmelody keeps a log of all install/uninstall actions. The log is named InstallLog.txt and is located in the \Program Files (x86)\DataCore Software\SANmelody folder. These instructions are for a new installationnot a software upgrade. Before beginning the installation:

Ensure you have reviewed and performed the Pre-Installation Steps, which contain important instructions and information that you need prior to installing SANmelody software. Verify that your servers meet the current system requirements defined on our Web site (http://www.datacore.com/products/prod_SANmel_prerequisites.asp). Ensure Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 is installed on the machine; if not, the installation will terminate. (This software can be downloaded from Microsoft Download Center: http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/.) Have your SANmelody licenses available. If you are licensed for High Availability (HA), each storage server requires a unique license. Install SANmelody on one storage server at a time. Be prepared to logon to Windows using a local administrator account.

Follow these procedures to install on the storage server: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Log on to Windows locally or with the "console" session remotely using a local administrator account. Save and close all files, programs, and windows. At the end of the installation, it will be necessary to restart the system to finalize the installation process. Run the SANmelody executable file that you downloaded. If the installation wizard does not start automatically, open Windows Explorer and double-click on the executable file. You may receive a Windows User Account Control message, asking for permission to run the executable file. Click Continue. The InstallShield Wizard for SANmelody begins. On the Welcome window, click Next to begin the installation. Respond to the prompts as appropriate to continue through the installation. On the License Agreement window, click Yes to accept the license terms and continue. On the Customer Information box, enter the user name and company name and click Next. On the Choose Destination Location box, you may keep the default location for the SANmelody files (C:\Program Files (x86)\DataCore Software\SANmelody) or click Browse to select a different location. Click Next to continue. You will receive a message that you will need to browse to the location of your license file, click OK.

9.

10. In the Find License File dialog box, browse to the file, select it, and click Open. 11. On the Ready to Install the Program box, click Install. 12. The installation begins, you may have to respond to different messages or wizards to successfully complete the installation process.

Windows Security Alerts to install DataCore device drivers; select the Always trust software from DataCore Software Corporation check box to install the remaining drivers without the prompts and click Install to continue. Found New Hardware Wizard may appear during the loading of the DataCore iSCSI Target Driver. Respond as appropriate to configure your hardware.

Important: Choose No on any Microsoft Windows messages asking you if you want to restart your system for "settings to take effect." Restarting the system at this time will interrupt the SANmelody installation and will result in an incomplete installation. 13. When the installation has completed and the SANmelody Setup Finished window appears, select Yes, I want to restart my computer now and click Finish. 14. When your computer restarts, log on to the system. Please be patient, as it may take some time for your system settings to update. On the desktop, the on-line Help will open to the Getting Started topic. If you have purchased a permanent SANmelody license, please ensure that you log on to SANmelody as "The Administrator." This is required in order to activate the permanent license in SANmelody. After activating the license, you can log on to Windows using any local account with administrator privileges. 15. If you are licensed for High Availability (HA) and have two storage servers in your SAN, close all SANmelody snap-ins and Computer Management on the storage server that you just installed, and repeat all the steps above on the second storage server, then continue to the next step.
