REFLECTING
THROUGH THE

WEEK

Which is a weed and which is a flower? Who is a sinner and who is a saint? Are we both? Fond Father, you wait for us in patience and kindness, as we, with your help, work with our weeds. Thank you for your tolerance. Make us patient with others.

FROM OUR PASTOR MASS INTENTIONS

Saturday, July 16 5:00 pm L/ Trabulsy Family Sunday, July 17 7:30 am St. Charles Parishioners 9:00 am Louis John Calamari 11:00 am Peter and Janet Kelly 12:45 pm Monday, July 18 9:00 am Mary Miller Tuesday, July 19 9:00 am Joseph and Eugenie Michael Wednesday, July 20 9:00 am James Cragan Thursday, July 21 9:00 am Frank Borrell Friday, July 22 9:00 am Bill Demetree Saturday, July 23 5:00 pm Ed Culberhouse Sunday, July 24 7:30 am Anthony Kim 9:00 am St. Charles Parishioners 11:00 am Stanley Rajkowski 12:45 pm I returned from England on Thursday, and on my last Sunday over there the Gospel was the parable of the sower, the parable which (as I wrote last week) is really about our capacity to hear the word of God. In fact this year is one of particular thanksgiving in the English-speaking world for the availability of the word of God in the Bible. It was in 1611, 400 years ago, that the King James Bible in English was made available to the public, and the influence of that version is still felt in more modern versions and in our use of the English language. The King James Version was not the first translation of the Bible into English, and not even the first official one. A Great Bible for reading in churches was commissioned for the Church of England in the reign of Henry VIII and there was another, improved version, in 1568. However there were obvious mistakes in these texts so in 1604 King James I convened 47 scholars to produce a new translation based on the original sources - translating the New Testament from Greek and the Old Testament from Hebrew (not from the later Greek version of the Hebrew text which earlier translators had tended to use because it was easier for them). The title page states (with the spelling of the time and rather an eccentric mixture of print styles): THE HOLY BIBLE, Conteyning the Old Testament, AND THE NEW: Newly Translated out of the Originall tongues: & with the former Translations diligently compared and revised, by his Majesties speciall Comandement. Appointed to be read in Churches. Imprinted at London by Robert Barker, Printer to the Kings most Excellent Majestie. ANNO DOM. 1611 . When the Church of England issued a new Book of Common Prayer in 1662 the King James text replaced the earlier versions of the readings and as such was authorized by Act of Parliament. The KJV is often known as the Authorized Version and although it has been replaced in more recent Church of England worship, many Protestants (even in America) treat it as if it is the only divinely approved version of the scriptures. The Catholic Church in England had its own approved English translation, the Douay-Rheims, which was complete by 1609, and since then we, too, have used more modern translations. However, anyone who speaks English has been influenced by the King James version because phrases from it have passed into our common language: when we say a sports team refused to give up the ghost; or call someone the salt of the earth or a law unto herself; or tell someone in an argument You can't put words in my mouth, we are actually using phrases from the 1611 Bible. We would find many parts of the KJV hard to read these days, and we have much more accurate translations, but Englishspeakers everywhere should be grateful for the seven year effort of King Jamess scholars which made the Bible a central part of the spiritual life of many generations of Christians and which continues to enrich our language.

HOW DO I BECOME A CATHOLIC?

Are you interested in learning more

about the Catholic faith? Would you like to become a Catholic? Do you know someone who may be interested?
The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (R.C.I.A.) is a process of conversion and initiation in the Catholic Church as adults (anyone seven years of age or older) journey together in faith and share experiences while discerning Gods call. If interested in participating, please call the office. We will be happy to assist you on your journey.

OFFICE HOURS: Monday-Friday, 7:30am-3:30pm MARRIAGE PREPARATION: Please contact the Church Office to schedule a meeting with Father Augustine. You need to allow six months for the preparation process and it would help us if you could obtain new baptism certificates before the meeting. We can also help with the convalidation (blessing) of a civil marriage and sometimes with the annulment of a previous marriage as long as the civil divorce is complete.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD, SEVEN YEARS OF AGE OR OLDER, WHO HAS NOT YET BEEN BAPTIZED CATHOLIC?
Once a child reaches the age of reason (seven), the child is brought into the Church just as an adult isthrough the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults. Following this process of preparation which lasts about a year, the child is fully initiated into the Church at the Easter Vigil through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion. In order to have a child baptized Catholic, at least one parent must be Catholic. If you are considering having your childage 7 or olderbecome Catholic, or if you have any questions, please contact Sister Marie at the parish office, 407.293.9556 ext. 121.

BAPTISM PREPARATION is offered to parents and

godparents and is required prior to scheduling a baptism. Please register for the class by calling Deacon Paul Volkerson at the Parish Office (407.293.9556 extension 110). Classes take place on Tuesday evenings at 7:00 pm.

Holy families are born of a holy marriage, and the love found in a holy marriage is a sacred calling begotten first by God's Love. When spouses invite Christ into every aspect of their marriage, then Christ can be present in every aspect of the life of the family. In this way, our God truly is Emmanuel, "God with us."
