It was a spontaneous request, perhaps a bit out of line, but for those who know me, not at all out of character. Hey Norm, I shouted from my bombardiers seat inside the glass-nose of the B-17. Apparently, Norm didnt hear me. Hey, N-o-r-r-m-m-m, I shouted again. He still didnt hear me. But then again, how could he, what with the roar of the four, 1,200-horse power engines that were revved to their fullest and thundering in our ears. Turning to face Norm Ellickson our crew chief who was seated just behind and above me I shouted very, very loud: Hey Norm, what do you say we fly an attack path over my publishers house and drop a 500-pound bomb or two? Still, no answer. Slowly and sadly taking my finger off the Bomb Release button, I wiped a sin-

YANKEE LADY: FROM PAGE 1

by another days missed opportunity. And while the aforementioned spurious anecdote should be considered the latter, the fact remains I did experience a magnificent, unforgettable moment on Sunday when I flew from Manistee Countys Blacker Airport to Detroits Metro Airport in a World War II Flying Fortress the Yankee Lady. What a beautiful trip it was, too. We flew low and slow. So low, just 3,500 feet up, I feared if we crashed into anything head-on it would not be another airplane, or even a stupid bird, for that matter, but rather a Mack truck that was fitted with a Texas-tall sleeper cab. Yet I could not have cared less about what might be floating or flying in front of us. From the moment we became airborne at 6:19 p.m., to the time we landed in the heart of WWIIs Arsenal of Democracy at 7:35 p.m., I hardly looked straight ahead, at all. Even though I was seated in the very front of the legendary airplane and had the best view of anyone, I left that standing-guard chore to our pilot, Gene Wederkemper. No, I was in awe complete, inspirational awe at what we were passing over. I just couldnt take my eyes off it. The picturesque patchwork of lakes and rivers, forests and farmland, and cities and villages below was worthy of display in the finest museum. For the believer it was a living canvas very much alive and breathing, yet oh-so breathtaking of where God had dragged His finger here through the Earth to create one river, there to create another, and where He had patted down the ground to make the soilrich farmland for His children. You could see where He scooped the sand and dirt and rocks into huge piles, too, to make His wondrous, rolling hills. The visual connection

Pilot Gene Wederkemper (left) and copilot Randy Hotton pause for a picture 10 minutes before taking off from the Manistee airport.

between Heaven and Earth from that altitude is 20/20 its perfect. During the war, though, swarms of B-17s flew at 35,000 feet, 10 times the service ceiling we were flying at. Maybe from that higher altitude the Earth becomes unexceptionally unearthly fuzzy and not so distinct, not so personal. I hope

so, because the Bomb Release sign and button near my left hand made me wonder how conflicting the feelings must have been for those who had been called to war. In the end, though, the Greatest Generation had a job to do and they did it. They saved the world. As for me, I may never

see the world from that view again until after I die, but Ill never forget it until then, either. There were no clouds to block our view, no haze to blur the beauty, just an incredible eye-popping, spirit-churning tour along Heavens Highway, from one side of the state, to the other. By the way, I really

would not have dropped two, 500-pound bombs on my publishers house. One, maybe, but not two. Either that or I would have dropped 10,000 leaflets that would have read, quite simply: Thank you Gene, Norm and the rest of the B-17 crew for letting me hitch a ride on your star the Yankee Lady!

Manistee The place to be!

BY VIRGINIA M. GINI PELTON
GUEST COLUMNIST
Its a slogan Ive adopted I say it, print it and believe it. For 19 years Ive felt fortunate to be able to live, work and raise my family in Manistee. Manistee has given our family so many opportunities. Scott and I were fortunate to coach and get to know so many of the wonderful youth and their families. Caitlin and Connor enjoyed being able to participate in so many sports, educated in a really good school system with a caring staff and gather the support of a second family-the Manistee community who embraces and cares for its residents. I have the extra good fortune in my career of meeting new people to our community every day. I know it gives me a very optimistic perspective on our little world. People move to Manistee by choice. They pursue careers that can bring them here. They want what we might take for granted. In the last few years Ive witnessed many young people who grew up with my kids working hard to qualify for positions that will bring them back to Manistee. A few years ago a client I had worked with only on the internet arrived in my office and said Did we just move to Heaven? I said, close! Many will say Oh Gini, youre a chamber ambassador, director and realtor of course youll cheerlead for our community. Well maybe these positions support my belief that Manistee is the place to be, but before I had any of these positions I believed this. So I challenge you to find a community of 9,000 people anywhere in the U.S. that has the following assets: miles of free beaches on Lake Michigan not even to mention the views and sunsets, catwalk and lighthouse, riverwalk along Manistee River, marinas, an airport with regular air service, great full service hospital, long term care facility, state park, nine community parks, casino, tribal government, National Forest, progressive manufacturing community, downtown that offers unique shopping and entertainment, historic fully operating live production theater and Art Institute. Operational and contributing museum, soon to be movie theater, daily newspaper, local radio station, churches for almost all faiths, great private and public schools, community kitchen, non-profits for all services, clubs for all interests, annual festivals to celebrate our assets, winery, natural food options, many financial institution choices, professionals in Investments, law, and medical to cover all needs, DDA, Visitor Bureau, Chamber of Commerce, economic support office, many city services and a safe well protected community with law enforcement and fire protection. All this in our town plus within 25 miles neighboring communities such as Arcadia, Bear Lake, Onekama, Brethren, Kaleva, Copemish and Wellston that offer more restaurants, lakes, organic farms, Schools of Choice, ski resort, world famous fishing, and historic sites. Ok I know Ive missed some great features our community but I hope you get the point. As the saying goes The glass is half full not half empty. Embrace what we have, work on adding to the mix. Lets not focus about whats not here but support what is here! Join the party. Get involved in making Manistee even a better place. There are so many opportunities to join in making a difference. Marquette Rail and the SS City of Milwaukee will host Business After Hours on July 21 from 5-7 p.m. Business After Hours is a monthly event presented by the Manistee Area Chamber of Commerce to provide networking opportunities in a relaxed, convivial atmosphere. The public is welcome. Who will you meet this month? Absolute Auto Repair & Tire has announced they are open for business! Absolute Auto Repair located at 7530 Chippewa Highway, Kaleva is open Monday Friday 8 a.m. 7 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m. 4 p.m. They are located on US 31 just south of Bear Lake and may be reached at 231889-0009.
