Food Industry Overview: Thai cuisine is renowned the world over for its rich and enticing flavors

and exotic blend of spices. The richness of this food will not only reward ones palate, but can also be discovered with investments in the vibrant and rapidly growing food industry. Thailand has the second largest economy in Southeast Asia and is one of the worlds leading food exporting countries. And, it is the worlds number one producer of natural rubber, rice, canned and frozen seafood, canned tuna, canned pineapples, and cassava, and the number two producer of sugar. Food exports alone in the first half of 2006 were in the amount of US$6.8 billion, representing a 5.9% annual growth. Major products include seafood and processed foods, in particular shrimp, processed tuna, canned fruit, and cooked chicken. And, according to the Thai National Food Institute (NFI), the countrys export earnings from the food sector will continue grow by 10.3% in 2007, due to improved product quality. With one of the most advanced processed food sectors in Southeast Asia, this sector accounts for near 15% of Thailands manufacturing output and is getting stronger. Approximately 9,000 food processing companies in Thailand produce annual earnings of about US$25 billion. Thailands food sector has superlative growth potential as the country maintains its position as an industry world leader through increased use of technology and improved standards in efficiency, production and hygiene.

Companies such as Herbalife International are enjoying terrific growth in Thailand, expecting to finish 2006 with a 25-30% growth rate. The company has reported an average growth of 20% each year since it began operations in Thailand in 1997.

Frozen Food As more and more people seek the convenience, quality and nutrition of prepared dinners, Thailands market for frozen instant food is expected to

Halal Food Thailand was the first country to implement a scientific standard for Halal Food, carried out by the Halal Science Center, with companies accredited by the Central Islamic Committee of Thailand. There are approximtely 60 factories in the Kingdom that hold certification. Rice Thailand is the number one exporter of rice in the world, and with exports to China tripling in the first four months of 2006 the industry is in the midst of a boom. The Kingdom will export 8.5 million tons of rice in 2006, and was awarded a quota of 73,455 tons from the European Union for 2007. Thai rice is free of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) Production of GMO-rice is prohibited in Thailand

Food safety The Food and Drug Administration ensures product safety through manufacturing licenses, food labeling, pre and post-marketing control and adherence to Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP), which is a mandatory measure for 54 types of food products. The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) members have accepted Thailands food-safety standards and the Agriculture and Agriculture Cooperatives Ministry is accelerating its standards and certification project. Food Safety Equipment Thailand has enforced the Good Manufacturing Process (GMP) standard since 2003, leading to significant growth in the food safety equipment market of about 20-25% per year. Kitchen of the World Thailand plans to expand its presence around the globe through its Kitchen of the World project, which includes nearly doubling the number of Thai restaurants in foreign counties. There are currently approximately 11,000 Thai restaurants outside of Thailand, of which about 28% are located in Europe. The aim of increased restaurants is to expand a Thai food presence and increase exposure to Thai food products. Supporting infrastructure: To update and support pertinent government and private food sectors with relevant and current food-related intelligence, the National Food Institute selects, analyzes, synthesizes and disseminates useful and up to date information. Information relevant to decision making, marketing, trade negotiations, standards setting and policy development include: Local and foreign regulatory developments with possible impacts to Thai Food Industry Pertinent scientific information Information on consumers' preferences and world markets Local and international food production, costs, price, import and export statistics Food situational analysis Food production and consumption trends Food market forecast The NFI helps in installing part of the team responsible for "Food Safety Management" in Thailand. Working in collaboration with Government Authorities including the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, Ministry of Public Health and Ministry of Industry, the team promotes food safety
