100 Volvos for Linfox
olvo Trucks has announced that it will supply Linfox with 100 new prime movers, consisting of a mixture of FM 11, FM 13 and FH models. All trucks for this order will be built locally at Volvos production facility in Brisbane, Queensland. According to General Manager of Volvo Trucks, Gary Bone, safety, efficiency and environmental compliance were key factors in Linfoxs decision. This decision represents a major shift in suppliers for the company. Were obviously very proud to be Linfoxs supplier of choice for this contract. For Linfox, safety,
fuel efficiency and reliability are extremely important, and this order makes it very clear that the Volvo trucks are able to meet these requirements, he said. Its well known that safety is Linfoxs number one priority. Their Vision Zero goals are something the whole industry should aspire to. As the international hallmark for vehicle safety, Volvo is a natural fit, and were happy to say that the extra Safety High package were providing on the FHs will make a significant contribution to Linfox achieving Vision Zero. Linfoxs customers also take
environmental responsibilities seriously. They expect their suppliers to do so as well. All the trucks were supplying meet the Euro 5 emissions standards of course, and are at the extreme end of fuel-efficiency. CEO of Volvo Group Australia, Arne Knaben, added, As a leading Australian logistics operator, Linfox sets the standard for the industry. Linfoxs values align perfectly with Volvo Trucks: they put safety, environmental care and quality first. The Linfox decision to buy Volvo trucks is a clear indicator that we are leading the way in the areas that really count.
lthough Isuzu Australia Limited is best known for its truck manufacturing, the company is now also competing in the marine engine market. The company has just installed two Isuzu marine engines that are based on the heavy duty Giga truck powerplant. It has been quite a process for IALs Industrial and Marine Engines division since it begun operations in 2008. Over the past three years or so, the division has been working hard to break into the marine engine market, which is currently dominated by the industrys key players. However the IAL venture has discovered a niche in the sector. According to Industrial and Marine Engines Manager, Dean Whitford, the recent installation of two Isuzu Marine engines marked the brands arrival in the Australian marine world.
These engines are being used to power fishing boats. The first of these engines is a 6WG1TCX that was purchased by Sam Steele through Brisbane-based distributor Zenith Engineering. This boat is set to commence its working life on Queenslands sunshine coast based in Mooloolaba. The second installation took place beneath the deck of the Arakiwa, a trawler owned by New South Wales fishing identity Paul Bagnato. He says he chose Isuzu over more established brands after careful consideration of all options. All my life Ive dealt with CAT and Cummins and theyve been good engines. But this Isuzu engine is just as good, in fact better, because of the amount of fuel Im saving, Mr Bagnato said. I couldnt go past the price either,
but beyond that its all about fuel consumption. When I went and saw Isuzu, their projections on fuel economy left me very comfortable. When I tested it myself, running with the heavy net, the Isuzu worked out to be saving me about four litres an hour. Over 30 hours, thats 120 litres of fuel. Over a year thats around $12,000 to $13,000. After four or five years the engine has paid for itself. While Im saving four litres an hour, I also have more power. It saves me around 1.5 to 2 hours getting to and from my fishing grounds, which gives me extra time to spend trawling. Although Id never use the Isuzus maximum power, its always good to know I have it. Its like an extra muscle somewhere thats put away, but if you ever need it, the power is there. And thats a big thing.
he board of directors of NC2, a global 50/50 commercial truck joint venture between Caterpillar and Navistar, have named Phil Christman as the new president, effective immediately. Al Saltiel, who has served as president of NC2 since July 2009, will return to Navistar as chief marketing officer. Mr Christman began working with Navistar in 1986 and since then has held numerous leadership roles, including vice president of
Engineering. Most recently he served as Navistars president, Global Truck Operations and as a key member of the NC2 board of directors. Phil Christman is the ideal choice to build on NC2s record of progress, said Doug Oberhelman, Caterpillars chairman and chief executive, and chairman of the NC2 board of representatives. Phil has been with NC2 from the beginning, having served as a key member of its board. He also has extensive experience
leading Navistars global truck operations and targeting vehicles for appropriate customers and markets around the world. Mr Christman added, Im looking forward to leveraging the strengths that both Navistar and Caterpillar offer the global truck industry in order to take NC2 to the next level. Well tap into our network of local resources to identify and deliver the right mix of International and Cat products and support to every market we serve.

New Actros proves its fuel efficiency
industry news
BP $35m investment in Perth
he Mercedes-Benz Record Run 2011, held in Brussels from 26 June to 2 July and covering over 10,000km, aimed to test the fuel efficiency of the new Actros. A new Actros 1845 LS meeting the Euro 6 emissions standard, and one meeting the Euro 5 standard went head to head in a comparative trial, travelling from east to west from Rotterdam to Szczecin and back again. A third vehicle, the Nardo version of the Actros 1844 LS MP 3 fuel, was used as a reference guide. Through the test it was found that the new Euro 6 compliant Actros undercut the currently valid standards by up to 80 percent. The new generation of Actros vehicles have been fully redesigned in compliance with Euro 6 and use 4.5 percent less diesel than the current Actros heavy-duty truck. In the test, the new 1845 BlueTec 5 Actros ran on 7.6 percent less diesel in the 10,000 long-haul comparative test drive than the current Actros
1844 BlueTec 5 model. The Actros 1844 BlueTec 5 set a reference value of 27.1 litres per 100 kilometres. With the optionally so-called Nardo specification, the test vehicle was designed for minimum road resistance. The follow-up Actros 1845 BlueTec 6 model undercut this benchmark by 4.5 percent, running on 25.9 litres per 100 kilometres. AdBlue consumption also showed impressive results in the new Mercedes-Benz Actros. The comparative test drive from Rotterdam to Stettin and back
revealed a difference of more than 40 percentage points between the present-day Mercedes-Benz 1844 LS (1.55 L/100 km) and the new Euro VI-compliant Mercedes-Benz Actros 1845 LS (0.86 L/100 km). The AdBlue consumption of the Euro V version on this route stood at just under 1.1 l per 100 kilometres. Each of the vehicles covered just over 10,000km in seven 24-hour shifts, with the average daily mileage standing at 1600km, broken down into an 800km day shift and a night shift of equal length.
P will invest $35 million in dual state-of-the-art freeway service stations on the Kwinana Freeway at Baldivis in Perth. These plans follow formal approval of the rezoning by the State Government. In addition to a full range of BP advanced fuels and lubricants, commercial customers will be able to make use of dedicated truck/ commercial vehicle fuelling lanes with high speed pumps. The new 24-hour facilities will provide an unmatched level of service and welcome customers with an attractive design that includes wide and convenient refuelling positions and a bright, clean atmosphere.
These sites will offer a BP Connect convenience store offering drinks, snack foods, tourist maps, emergency spares, confectionery, magazines and customer toilets. The dual service stations will be built on twin-sided 10 hectare greenfield sites on either side of the Kwinana Freeway, between Mundijong and Safety Bay Roads and the complex will serve an ever increasing number of tourists and commuters travelling between Perth and the south west of the state. Providing all permits are in place and tenders are awarded, construction is due to commence in early 2012 and take around 12 months to complete.
This project involves an investment of some $35 million and will sustain 150 jobs across a range of disciplines during construction. Around 200 new jobs will be created when the sites become operational in 2013. This development is a major innovation for Western Australia and another first for BP and the state, said Dean Salter, BP Australias Vice President Wholesale, Reseller and Retail. Freeway service centres are a proven format in other states and these sites at Baldivis will give motorists on the Kwinana Freeway an opportunity to break their journey, rest and refuel in safe, attractive and well-lit surroundings.
he Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) NSW has added an additional 600km to the HML route network within the state. Restrictions that prevented operators from browsing HML routes online unless they are accredited to the Intelligent Access Program (IAP) have also been lifted. Road transport operators association, NatRoad was pleased with the announcement. The OFarrell Government has hit the ground
running on road transport. Coupled with last weeks announcement by the Minister for Roads and Ports, The Hon Duncan Gay MLC, of an immediate 2.7 metre width concession for the transportation of wool bales in NSW, operators should be warming to the new stewardship of the NSW RTA and optimistic about the prospect of further positive announcements during 2011, said NatRoad president Rob McIntosh. We would like to see the Minister go
one step further and remove IAP as a mandatory condition for HML access in NSW. However, previously operators could not even browse the HML routes without first becoming IAP accredited. In a positive incremental step, new routes have been added and operators can now browse the available routes before making a decision about whether or not it is worth the effort and expense of operating under IAP, he said. HML route maps can be viewed on the NSW RTA website.
he Industrial Logistics Institute has presented NTIs National Manager of Industry Relations, Owen Driscoll, with a Post Masters Professional Certificate of Logistics Research for his four truck accident studies. The award was presented to Mr
Driscoll at the 2011 Australian Trucking Convention following a presentation of his latest truck accident research report which examines 323 major truck accidents that occurred in 2009, and builds on previous reports covering accidents in
2003, 2005 and 2007. Co-director of the Industrial Logistics Institute, Associate Professor Kim Hassall, said that the report was worth its weight in gold. Mr Driscolls latest report can be viewed via the NTI website.
