INSTRUCTION FOR BATTERY DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT

Area & Distributor

All

1. Description
1. DESCRIPTION
In an effort to enhance the battery serviceability at field, this bulletin is issued to provide the instruction for the battery diagnosis and treatment as follows: 1) Prior to the vehicle delivery carried from the manufacturer to customer via distributors and dealers PDI. 2) To resolve the battery problem from the customer vehicles in distributor and dealer workshop. Especially, this instruction for the battery problem can help you diagnose and treat the right way by using the battery charger after measuring the parasitic current and the alternator charging current in your work shop.

2. APPLICABLE VEHICLES
Model: All passengers vehicles Area: All

3. WARRANTY INFORMATION
OP CODE 37110A00 OPERATION Battery Charging (Including diagnosis time) OP TIME 0.3 DEFECT CODE NATURE N 01 CAUSE C 99

4. OVERALL BATTERY MANAGEMENT

1) Notice 1
When the battery is falling below 12.2 Volts(battery charge percentage of 50 % at 20) by discharging the battery with the IG Acc ON or the power connector connection (transportation switch ON), you would not be able to start the vehicle and identify as shown in the following table. Power connector disconnection / Transportation switch ON with the IG key out of the key -slot 156 days

Condition Hard starting

IG key Acc ON 2.5 days

Power connector connection / Transportation switch ON 15 days

Therefore, keep in mind that the battery voltage is not falling below 12.54 V with the IG key OFF and the power connector disconnection (or Transportation switch ON) until the vehicles are delivered to the customer. If the vehicles have to be stored for 25 days or more, the negative (-) cable should be removed to prevent battery drain completely. # Recommendation - The battery voltage of all vehicles stocked in ports and dealers should keep 12.54 V or more. - Once the battery voltage falls below 12.54, it is required to recharge the battery properly depending on conditions as below. Battery voltage 12.3 ~ 12.54V Below 12.3 Action Recharge for more than 2 hours Recharge for more than 6 hours

2) Notice 2
When the customers complaining of the battery or the battery performance suspected in your work shop, refer to the following diagnosis procedure.

5. GENERAL DIAGNOSIS PROCEDURE

Please, follow the diagnosis procedure below to do carefully.

6. DIAGNOSIS AND SERVICE

1. Start the engine and check the charging warning light stays on.

If this light stays on at idle, please see the file attached. NOTE: Driving with the charging system warning light on can cause the battery to discharge completely. Therefore, please start the engine by using the some jumper cables, if the battery has run down. 2. Securely close all doors, hood and trunk and turn the ignition switch to the OFF position, and then remove the battery negative (-) cable. 3. Connect the multi-meter to the battery, the red probe to the negative terminal and the black probe to the negative (-) post in order to measure the parasitic current as shown in the photo.

4. Measure the parasitic current value within 5 minute. Specified value Applicable Vehicles All Parasitic Current Less than 50 mA (0.05A)

NOTE: If you find an excessive parasitic current, check the cause of the parasitic current while pulling the

suspected fuses one by one in the fuse box after confirming the additional electrical system. 5. Measure the alternator current at the condition of the electrical load and no electrical load by using an ammeter.

Observe the following procedure: 1) Visually check the drive belt and the wiring with the battery cable connection. 2) Set the 0 adjust switch until reading is set to 0000 and release it at the DC current range position. 3) Place the inductive pick up over the B+ terminal wire of the alternator wire as below.

NOTE : It is strongly recommended that the current measurement A is placed at nearby the terminal of alternator output (B+) due to the different design of the electrical wiring around the battery.

4) Start the engine and let it idle for more than 5 minutes.

5) Turn on the headlight high beams.

6) Turn on the A/C switch on with the blower control Max. position and the front /rear defroster switch.

7) Raise the engine speed to 2500 rpm, and hold it there.

8) Measure the amount of alternator output current and the battery voltage by using the multi meter.

Refer to the specified value of alternator output current and the battery voltage as following.

Specified value with the electrical systems load at 2500 rpm Specified value (Charging Current Amount) > Alternator rated output current X 0.6 The alternator rated output current is able to be found on the label of the alternator, which varies with models and engines. Or, refer to the specification section in Engine Electrical system of the shop manual.

NOTE: If its outputs are abnormal, see the file attached after checking the nut tightness of the alternator B +

terminal and the S terminal connection. 9) Turn off the headlamp switch, the A/C switch / blower and the front /rear defroster switches. (Remove all electrical loads.) 10) Let it idle for more than 3 minutes, and then measure the amount of alternator output current and the battery voltage by using the multi meter without the electrical systems load.

Specified value without the electrical systems load at idle Applicable Vehicles All Charging Current Amount Less than 30 A

If it exceeds the charging current amount 40 A, the battery should be charged by the battery charger. Battery Charging Procedure as follows: 1) Turn the IG switch to OFF position and remove the battery from the vehicle. 2) The voltage, the amperage and the time to charge are the following battery charging rate table. Applicable Vehicles All Applied Voltage Approx. 15 V Charging Amps Approx. 25 A Charging Time Within 1 hour

Volts

Amperes

NOTE: When setting the charging voltage (approx.15V), the charging current will be changed according to the SOC(State Of Charge) of the battery. See the instructions provided by the manufacturer of the battery charger about the safety precaution before charging the battery 3) The charging current on the battery charger gets down to approx. 10 A, Please, turn off the charger power and install the battery in the vehicle.
