Famous Clydesdales on Parade planned for Three Lakes visitors Thursday, July 28
Mark your calendars for the weekend because the Clydesdales on Parade event starts on July 28 and it is going to be one action-filled weekend. Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce is excited and proud to announce that the world-famous Budweiser Clydesdales will be on parade Thursday, July 28. Starting at Cy Williams Park a full eight-horse hitching process will begin at 5 p.m. followed by a parade down Superior Street, accompanied by two drivers and the famous dalmatian to deliver beer the old-fashioned way, straight off the beer wagon, to various businesses in town. Vintage cars and trucks from the 193040s era, area floats and Three Lakes community groups will join in the parade and return to Cy Williams Park. A party at Cy Williams Park will follow offering food, beverages, beer, live entertainment and raffles. Photo opportunities with the Clydesdales will be available and vintage cars and trucks will be on display. Main raffle tickets are on sale now. The grand prize is a three-night stay at Sheraton City Center in St. Louis, Mo., for two, which includes round-trip airfare, two VIP expedition tours of Grants Farm where the Clydesdales are bred and two VIP brewmaster tours of the Budweiser brewery. Raffle tickets are available now throughout Three Lakes at many local area businesses and at the Three Lakes chamber office, located at 1704 Superior St. Many other surprises and great raffle opportunities are being planned for all to enjoy. Other events this weekend will be the Northwoods Art Tour July 28-31; the Skip Wagner show, Las Vegas-style entertainment starting at 9 p.m. July 28-31 at Oneida Village Inn; the annual Snowmobile Grass Drag Races at Burnside Park July 30; the Northwoods Faerie Festival July 30, from 1 to 4 p.m.; TNT Speedway, racing at 7 p.m. July 30; and the Aqua Devils Water Ski Show July 30 at 6:30 p.m.. Come and see for yourself why Three Lakes was voted the Single Best Town. Last year Three Lakes was named the Single Best Town in America as it received more votes than any other towns that were considered. A block party was held and sponsored by Kraft Singles and Disney ABC television, drawing thousands to the area. This year, on Thursday, Aug. 4, the town of Three Lakes will hold its own block party and the bands performing will be Madd Hoss Jackson, Pyschobilly Rodeo and Exile. There will be games for the children, free grilled-cheese sandwiches, beer and coolers on the street and Three Lakes food vendors serving up the North Woods best. For more information, contact the Three Lakes Area Chamber at (715) 546-3344. Hiking and biking The ChequamegonNicolet National Forest features beautiful campgrounds on local lakes as well as excellent hiking trails, each varying in length and difficulty to accommodate hikers of all skill levels. Be sure to visit the Franklin Lake, Giant Pine, Spectacle/ Kentuck Lake, LunaWhite Deer, Sevenmile Lake and the Sam Campbell Memorial trails. Like the forests winding trails, our country roads are great for biking and offer riders spectacular views of true North Woods beauty. These same roads are featured in the annual Three Lakes Wheel-AWay, a family bike event to be held Saturday, Sept. 4.
Threes Lakes offers a large variety of outdoor activities, including fishing, hunting, hiking and snowmobiling. --NEWS-REVIEW PHOTO

getting some fresh air and exercise, the Three Eagle Trail is just the ticket. The 8.5-mile-long path with a 10-foot-wide crushed limestone surface begins in Three Lakes and ends on Sundstein Road in Eagle River. Lake country Three Lakes and the surrounding area offer some of the best fishing in the North Woods. Muskie, walleye and northern pike are numerous as are bluegill, crappie, bass, trout and perch. Local fishing guides and tackle shops provide knowledge and equipment for anglers new to the area. For those skilled in muskie fishing, be sure to register for the Headwaters Fall Classic of Champions, held on the Three Lakes Chain September 24-26. Three Lakes is best known for being home to the largest inland chain of freshwater lakes in the world. Boaters have

access to 20 lakes covering 7,626 acres. Eight more lakes and the Eagle River Chain of Lakes, can be accessed via the Burnt Rollways Dam boat hoist. The lakes provide the perfect place for skiing, wakeboarding, boating and paddling. Summer events Weekly events, such as the historical societys Tuesday evening Concerts in the Park, the Wednesday Firemens Flea Markets and the Saturday night TNT Speedway races are very popular, as are the biweekly ski shows put on by the Aqua Devils Ski Club. Shows are held Wednesday and Sunday evenings at 6:30 p.m. on Big Stone Lake from June through August. Come fall and winter, the weather and the activities change. Other seasons In the fall, Three Lakes has great duck

and grouse hunting. November brings whitetail deer and bear hunting. The North Woods and the ChequamegonNicolet National Forest camps draw people from all over for each of the various hunting seasons. Three Lakes offers some of the best snowmobiling in the state. With more than 120 miles of trails, you can traverse the county with ease. The trails are safe, clean and well marked, thanks to many volunteers. Cross-country ski and snowshoe trails can be found throughout the Nicolet National Forest, around Camp Luther and on the Three Eagle Trail. For more information on any event or activity listed above, call the Three Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce and Welcome Center at 1-(800) 972-6103 or (715) 546-3344. Local Health Mart Pharmacies offer experienced and knowledgeable staff

Serving the health needs of visitors to the North Woods since 1929 are the Health Care Pharmacies. With locations in Land O Lakes, St. Germain and on Wall Street in downtown Eagle River, they can provide for the health-care needs of Vilas County residents and visitors alike. These pharmacies not only offer old-fashioned personal service, experienced and knowledgeable staff and value pricing, but also use state-of-theart technology and expertise to serve you better. Health Care Pharmacies are locally owned. The managing pharmacist at each location is an owner in the business, and who cares more than a business owner about providing the best customer care? Personal service is emphasized, with a friendly, knowledgeable staff of pharmacists who have more than 100 years combined experience. The Health Care Pharmacies are now part of Health Mart, the fourthlargest nationwide pharmacy chain. Health Mart is a network of privately owned pharmacies joined together to leverage the power and efficiencies of a chain. Health Care Pharmacies feature professional prescription service and will call customers doctors offices or pharmacies back home for approval to fill a lost or forgotten prescription. Travelers can cure small inconveniences such as swimmers itch, bug bites, rashes or sunburns at a local Health Care Pharmacy. A variety of anti-itch and sunburn treatments are available, along with an expanded home medical equipment section. The pharmacies also employ experts on the treatment of outdoor exposure-related ailments. Prescription items in inventory number nearly 2,000 at each location. The store also offers real-time electronic Medicare billing and accepts most insurance. Each location is extensively stocked for the new summer season. Each store carries a full line of health and beauty-care items. Full departments can be found for first aid, allergy, cough and cold, dental and pain supplies and an extensive line of medical elastic supports. Each store also carries cosmetics, beauty aids and nice fragrance selections. A large Gibson greeting card selection is stocked at each location which are priced at 50% off the marked retail price every day. There is a large vitamin department at each location as well. Each store is equipped with the best technology operated by experienced, knowledgeable staff. We may not have a club like the big boxes, but our prices compete with anyone and we provide service and advice to go with your prescription or over-the-counter items. You will leave the pharmacy with the knowledge to use your product correctly for the best treatment of your condition and fastest recovery, a store representative said. Group purchasing has allowed the stores to earn discounts from the wholesaler which, in turn, has lowered prices for consumers. It has allowed the stores to buy in on quantities too large to handle if the stores were separate. All stores have been remerchandised for the new season and are full of new, fresh and exciting products for the summer. All three stores are community minded and take pride in civic and community involvement and support of local clubs, churches and civic groups. The sweet aroma of fudge made with Wisconsin cream and butter or peanut brittle bubbling away in a copper kettle welcome customers as they enter the sweetest place in town, Country Store. For many years, stopping in at Country Store, located in downtown Eagle River, has been a family tradition. Dick and Debbie Preuhs would like to thank all their loyal customers for their support as they begin their 27th summer as owners. A commitment to quality is one of the reasons Country Store has won awards for its chocolate walnut fudge, caramel corn and cashew snappers. Though fudge and turtles are customer favorites, there are many other great candies and chocolates available. Toffee, almond bark and chocolate pretzels also are popular. One of the largest selections of sugar-free chocolates is available for those with special diet needs. pate the first apple of the season, they often remind us they are the best caramel apples they have ever tasted, said owner Debbie Preuhs. Northern Lights Antiques offers unique collectibles

Northern Lights Antiques, located at 14218 Himanka Hill Road south of Bruce Crossing, Mich., is in the pristine Ottawa National Forest. For more than 20 years, owners John and Beverly Lopez have maintained a unique variety of antiques and collectibles. The drive to the shop is east off of Highway 45 on a blacktopped country road lined with apple trees that remind one of the many farms once an important part of Michigans Upper Peninsula (U.P.). Northern Lights is noted for its fine collection of American Art Pottery. Pottery lovers will find Rookwood, Roseville, Hull, Weller and some unusual contemporary pieces. There also is an interesting selection of British, Finnish and Norwegian pottery. Northern Lights maintains a large selection of dinnerware, cups and saucers, collector plates, figurines, tea pots, etc. There are stoneware jugs and crocks and a sizable selection of kerosene lamps. Customers will find glass objects from the Victorian period, elegant glass from the Depression period, carnival glass and collectibles from the 1960s period which includes basics such as mixing bowls, bakers, utensils and other interesting kitchenware. Northern Lights also has real cast-iron cooking items. The collection includes an interesting assortment of vintage Oriental collectibles. They also have a good collection of postcards. We would be remiss if we did not mention our collection of bar memorabilia, said Beverly Lopez. Customers can find mugs, steins and bar signs, advertising bar glasses and bottles from areas in the U.P. The tool collection is quite large and includes a fair assortment of wood planes, draw shaves, traps, logging tongs and other miscellaneous items. There also are some fishing collectibles. All the merchandise is clean, clearly marked and grouped by categories. Store hours are 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time. For more information, call (906) 827-3933.

The menu selection at Kathan Inn near Eagle River has something for everyone, including an all-you-caneat fish fry every Friday night. There also is a diverse

selection of burgers and sandwiches, Mexican entres, homemade pizzas and wraps. Kathan Inn is located on County Highway H.

For an all you-can-eat fish fry, head to the Kathan Inn & Resort
The all-you-can-eat fish fry is a dying breed. Whereas once upon a Friday night, fish fry feasters could send their plates back to the kitchen for seconds, thirds, even fourth helpings, these days most restaurants limit you to a single serving. Kathan Inn & Resort, however, still offers the all-you-can-eat fish fry, available from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. both Thursdays and Fridays. The fish fry features long, thick pieces of haddock, covered in beer batter and deep-fried to a golden brown. Sides include rye bread and coleslaw and either potato salad or crispy shoestring fries. Jim and Barb Domnick took over ownership of Kathan Inn & Resort in October of 2005 and welcome you to the inn for a great dining experience. Barb said, Kathan Inns fish fry stands out for a few reasons, the quality ingredients, like the haddock and the beer batter, and their close attention to details. The fish size is a cut above, too. The pieces are very large. Many of the same people dine at the Kathan Inn for fish every Friday and then, of course, there are many newcomers. At the Kathan Inn, the menu selection has something for everyone. If fish dinners arent your thing, dont worry. There is a diverse selection of burgers and sandwiches, Mexican entres, homemade pizzas and wraps. Kathan Inn has recently unveiled a new summer menu, keeping all of the favorites but adding fantail shrimp, buffalo shrimp and many new hot and cold sandwiches. Also new this summer, Kathan Inn offers buckets of fish on both Thursday and Friday nights. In addition to indoor dining, another great feature at Kathan Inn is the outdoor deck overlooking private Kathan Lake. When the weather is nice, most diners prefer eating outside, so we are fortunate that we can offer the outdoor lakeside dining, said Barb Domnick. Other specials offered at Kathan Inn include $2, third-pound burgers Mondays and spaghetti Tuesdays. Wednesday night is chili night (chili fries, chili dogs, chili nachos, chili burgers, chili burritos, etc.) and Thursdays, enjoy the 35-cent chicken wings. Sit down to a delicious broasted chicken dinner Saturdays (or take a bucket home) and Sundays, take advantage of dog days hot dogs for $1 and brats for $2. Located in Eagle River at 8570 Highway H, Kathan Inn will celebrate its 90th anniversary this year. In addition to the restaurant, lakeside cabin rentals are available. For more information, call Kathan Inn at (715) 479-4260 or visit the website at kathanresort.com.

Gifts, art found at Trading Post stores

Trading Post Antiques and Trading Post Internationale in downtown Land O Lakes offer a unique mixture of antiques, fine gifts and clothing, with Native American items featured in both establishments. Owners Harold and Barbara Nehring, who have been in business in Land O Lakes for 47 years, have expert knowledge of their fine wares and offer friendly and personal service to customers. Throughout both stores, visitors will find the widest selection of authentic hand-woven Navajo rugs in the area, including rare turn-ofthe-century masterpieces. Like the older rugs, the new Navajo rugs are supreme examples of the highest-quality Navajo weavings. Both old and new, for the floor or for the wall, the rugs are perfect accessories for rustic North Woods homes or sophisticated city dwellings. Native American art enthusiasts also will find a handsome selection of unique, handmade Ojibwe (Chippewa) woodland Indian beadwork and quillwork, including much-sought-after porcupine quill boxes in an amazing variety. These boxes, made of birch bark and sweet-smelling grass, are artistically decorated with natural and dyed porcupine quills. They are unique to the woodland tribes and are increasingly rare as the art is now limited due to a decreasing number of artists willing to invest the time to make these unique boxes Trading Post Internationale also features fine clothing for men, women and children, as well as handmade Native American jewelry and moccasins. Woolrich for men, women and children is a prominent name in the clothing department. Montana Coat Co. and Tasha Polizi are two unique lines for women. Hartstrings, Kitestrings, Hatley and Purple Mountain, add to the growing unique childrens department Young peoples gifts also include a carefully selected group of toys and books geared to nature and Native American appreciation. On the traditional side, Trading Post Internationale has a fine selection of classically elegant gifts, such as Bohemian ruby glass, Royal Doulton and Hummel figurines and fine crystal. These items join North Woods decorative accessories such as Native Americanmade birch-bark mirrors, lamps, dreamcatchers and truly distinctive antler wall hangings. Trading Post Internationale also features Taos and Cochiti Indian drums and deerskin lamps. The hides are hand cured and the drums are carved out of cottonwood and then hand painted by the Pueblo artists. Northernaire offers luxurious condos at amazing price

For a relaxed vacation destination with that rustic appeal, look no further then Northernaires luxurious condominiums of Three Lakes. At the gateway of the North Woods, more specifically the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest, Northernaire showcases all that nature has to offer in the Nicolet; scenic bicycling, hiking, camping, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and world-class snowmobiling are a few of the activities to enjoy. Just a short drive into Three Lakes and you will find an old-fashioned yet inviting town full of shopping, dining and arts. Many nearby towns, including Eagle River and Minocqua, offer extensive shopping and dining opportunities. Nearly everything youll want or need can easily be found in the Three Lakes area. Northernaires greatest feature is the worlds largest freshwater chain of lakes at your fingertips. The Chain consists of 28 lakes, 20 of which are easily accessible from the docks on Deer Lake and have a surface area of 7,626 acres, with 106 miles of shoreline. These lakes are home to 16 varieties of fish. Some lakes are secluded in the Nicolet National Forest, and all vary in size. They offer everything from water sports to canoeing to fishing. Northernaire offers all the luxuries of the North Woods at an unbelievable price. It was purchased by Mitch Viegut and his partners from M&I Bank after a foreclosure. Viegut said the purchase price is allowing them to heavily discount the deluxe condominium units, which were constructed with maple hardwood floors, solid hard wood doors and trim, granite countertops, gas fireplaces and outdoor patios. We are offering the standard units that were once priced at $400,000 for $179,000, and larger units that were $525,000 are now selling for $199,000, said Viegut. And this for fully furnished units that include everything, including stainless- steel appliances, furniture, bedroom sets and all the extras. Some of the units include tubs with ceramic surrounds, jetted tubs, lofts, arched doorways and various interior packages. Additionally, Viegut said the maintenance fees to the condominium association are going to be locked for two years at $215 a month. Condominium owners buy into joint ownership of common amenities that include an indoor pool, fitness center, both indoor and outdoor hot tubs, a massive lounge area, walking trails, fire

Three Lakes Lions Club to host annual auction

The Three Lakes Lions Club will host its annual auction Saturday, July 23, at Three Lakes High School beginning at 11 a.m. for item inspection, while the sale will begin at noon. Items will be auctioned to raise money for various community activities the Lions Club organizes throughout the year. Food and drinks will be available on-site during the auction. Anyone who has clean, usable and serviceable items they are willing to donate should contact the club as soon as possible, said Lions Secretary Kay Coates. As long as it can be reused by another, well take the donated goods and put them on the auction block. Since the auction is not a rummage sale, the Lions cant accept donations of clothing, large appliances or sleeper sofas. None of these items have sold well in the past, said Coates. But we do take certain large items, provided they are in working condition. Well even accept boats. We auctioned off two of those last year. Well also accept autos, consumer electronics and furniture. The club puts the funds raised in the annual auction back into the community. To donate an item, contact Bob Borek of the Lions Club at (715) 5463457 and a club member will come to the home of a donor to pick up the items.

CornerStone fulfills customers visions

CornerStone Custom Builders Inc. has recently completed its 21st year supplying custombuilt homes varying in style, size and function to fulfill its customers visions throughout the North Woods. We always have prided ourselves on being an innovative business able to adjust to the current trends and desires of our clients, stated Glenn Schiffmann, president of CornerStone. The traditional backbone of CornerStones business is the building of single-family homes. We are uniquely equipped to build the home that matches your lifestyle. Our homes are custom built with unlimited available options, noted Bruce Stefonek, project manager at the Rhinelander office. Stefonek joined the CornerStone team this past January. He is a North Woods native son with a wealth of building experience and knowledge acquired over the years of building in the area communities. His transition into the team has been effortless. He started up at full speed and has not missed a beat since he came on board, stated David Cox, vice president of operations. To assist you in your design decisions, you are invited to tour one of the eight model homes to spark ideas and generate questions as you start your home-building journey, said Jeremy Oberlander, project manager located in Eagle River. Our model homes are a great tool to use when sitting down in the planning stages. The ability to see a vaulted ceiling, the size of potential rooms or kitchen layout is invaluable, said Eric Klein, project manager at the Minocqua office. CornerStones originality allows you to build from your own home plans or sit down with their talented designer and bring a sketch to reality. Several of the homes we have built are a mixture of several home plans or a combination of our model home floor plans. We have many options to get you started, stated Darren Rubo, project manager at the Eagle River office. The CornerStone team has seen several changes in the past few years. More and more clients were requesting a larger percentage of green building materials and products offering additional energy-saving efficiencies in their new homes. In keeping the tradition of being a leader in the northern Wisconsin building circles and giving their customers even more options, CornerStone officially opened its newest green-certified model home, the GreenStone, in January 2011. The GreenStone features a totally different look and material selection from the other CornerStone model homes presently displayed. The fact is, CornerStone has been building green for many years and felt it was time to provide its customers with the option to certify their CornerStone home at little or no additional cost. While some of these products add costs on the front end of the project, the goal is to recapture this initial investment with energy savings over time while being sensitive to the demand placed on our natural resources and the North Woods environment, said Steve Schmutzer, project manager in the Minocqua office. To learn more, you are welcome to visit with one of the project managers at any of CornerStones three locations. The welcome mat is always out for your visit to any of CornerStones eight unique model homes. Every location is staffed with a project manager who will be responsible for the construction process from start to finish. The models are available for viewing in Eagle River

Recently, the Small Business Institute/Small Business Administration/UW System conducted anonymous independent surveys of pizza customers of the 11 major pizza restaurants in the Eagle River area. The survey considered quality of food, cleanliness, service and atmosphere. Alexanders Family Pizza was rated #1! Out of 11 restaurants mentioned Alexanders was ranked number 1, an independent was second, and a national chain was third, both far behind in customer choice. Alexanders was found to offer a quality product at a reasonable price. According to the survey, quality has proven to be of more importance to the customer. Alexanders has excellent pizza. It uses the highest quality ingredients. Alexanders Family Pizza wishes to thank all the many people who participated in the surveys. We truly appreciate the fact that our long-term goal of wanting to be known for quality pizza has been realized.
