As the world's premier automobile manufacturer, Mercedes Benz takes its responsibility for environment care very seriously.

Which is why, we are constantly engaged in improving every aspect of automotive technology to reduce the impact on the environment. BlueEFFICIENCY takes its name from the expression blue planet a description of the earth, when viewed from space. Blue also symbolizes water which is the only output of a zero emission vehicle - and also the only output of a zero emission vehicle. BlueEFFICIENCY is an agglomeration of numerous advancements: from drag reducing aerodynamics to energyefficient power systems. Each of these measures does its bit to reduce fuel consumption, collectively offering substantial savings while reducing CO2 emissions by up to 23%. Efficient energy management Optimizing energy measures include recovery of braking energy, regulation of power steering and improved transmission ratio of the rear axle. All these measures help save energy or recover excess energy. All of which has a positive effect on fuel consumption. Aerodynamic efficiency Less wind resistance means less power expenditure for the drive system, directly resulting in lower fuel consumption. Targeted measures such as complete underbody panelling, a special " cooler guard" for the engine compartment, lowering the body level or even use of special wheel-tyre combinations make for less consumption and help further reduce the CO2 figures. Tyres optimised for rolling resistance Mercedes-Benz vehicles of the new generation are equipped with low rolling-resistance tyres. Through a special profile and an improved rubber mixture, the rolling resistance significantly decreases on the road surface in comparison to normal tyres, increasing efficiency and demonstrating true Mercedes-style handling safety. Lower weight for higher efficiency Vehicle weight directly influences energy efficiency and Mercedes addresses this through a slew of measures. Weight reduction is another approach Mercedes-Benz is using to reduce the consumption of the BlueEFFICIENCY models. Various measures decrease the vehicle weight, depending on the model, by 19 to 23 kilograms, e.g. through a thinner front windscreen (1.2 kg reduction), forged lightweight wheels (7 kg reduction) and optimised front wall insulation (approx. 20% reduction). The BlueEFFICIENCY Models: Environmental protection is not a marketing exercise but a matter of great concern at Mercedes-Benz. As the inventor of the automobile, Mercedes-Benz bears a particular responsibility, which we fully embrace. Today we offer 3 models that represent a significantly reduced burden on the environment. The innovations that make this possible go under the name BlueEFFICIENCY.

NGT. The flexible drive system based on natural-gas or petrol operation The use of NGT (natural gas technology) at Mercedes-Benz underlines the possibilities presented by alternative fuels. The primary focus is on an innovative drive system operated with both natural gas and petrol. The driver can switch between the two drive systems according to requirements. In doing so, power and torque remain unchanged. The only values to fall are emission figures, engine noise and consumption costs. In city traffic, for example, CO2 output is reduced by up to 15%. And a kilogramme of natural gas is around half the price of a litre of petrol. Another practical side effect: the natural gas tank extends the absolute operating range. NGT is used in the B-Class 180 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY.

BlueTEC. The clean diesel Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed BlueTEC, a filter system that almost completely purifies diesel emissions and already complies with the EU 6 exhaust standard (which does not come into force until 2014). This is possible thanks to a modular emission control system. In an initial processing stage, an oxidation catalytic converter and particulate filter reduce levels of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons, particulate emissions and soot particles. In a subsequent step, the aqueous urea solution AdBlue is sprayed into the exhaust gas. The heat splits the urea into ammonia molecules, which reduce nitrogen oxides in the downstream SCR catalytic converter by up to 90%. SCR stands for selective catalytic reduction. BlueTEC is available for the E 350 BlueTEC, ML 350 BlueTEC, GL 350 BlueTEC and R 350 BlueTEC.

BlueTEC HYBRID clean diesel with electric drive BlueTEC Hybrid combines the benefits of the hybrid drive with those of BlueTEC technology. With the hybrid concept, braking energy is converted to electrical energy and supplied to the electric motor when required. A high-capacity lithium-ion battery is used for this power storage/delivery. The BlueTEC filter system reduces nitrogen oxide output by up to 90% in diesel engines. This is achieved using an oxidation catalytic converter and particulate filter, which reduce the level of carbon monoxide, hydrocarbons and particulate emissions. BlueTEC Hybrid combines both of these systems. It benefits from two powerful technologies and makes a key contribution to the environment. The BlueTEC Hybrid will be used in the E-Class from 2011 and in the GLK 300 BlueTEC Hybrid from 2012.

BlueEFFICIENCY measures. The Mercedes-Benz efficiency package The BlueEFFICIENCY measures are put together on an individual model basis. This involves testing and analysing all vehicle components for increased efficiency. The package of BlueEFFICIENCY measures covers factors including improved aerodynamics, the use of lightweight materials, intelligent energy management, and optimisation of the steering system for more energy-efficient power steering. The objective is to reduce fuel consumption. The C-Class equipped with BlueEFFICIENCY package consumes up to 23% less fuel. Today 66 BlueEFFICIENCY models are available for the A-Class, B-Class, C-Class, CLC-Class, E-Class, M-Class, GLClass, R-Class, GLK-Class, S-Class and CL-Class.

HYBRID. Intelligent combination of petrol engine and electric motor Hybrid technology is implemented in the S 400 Hybrid drive system. An electric motor supports the combustion engine according to driving situation, and helps to reduce fuel consumption. The electric motor generates parts of its energy through regenerative braking and stores this in a lithium-ion battery. This intelligent combination of petrol and electric drive helps to reduce fuel consumption in city traffic by up to 25%. The S 400 Hybrid complies with the EU5 emissions standard.

A new direction towards a healthier environment More respect for the environment and active participation in environmental protection in order to conserve our planet's resources for future generations: these are the objectives of Mike Horn's PANGAEA project. In order to motivate and inspire people, he sailed around the world in his ship of the same name. This is one reason why Mercedes-Benz is a primary sponsor for PANGAEA.

Innovative drive systems which forge new paths Mercedes-Benz engineers have developed three vehicles based on the so-called sandwich floor architecture. This is possible thanks to Concept BlueZERO and the integrated technologies F-CELL, E-CELL and E-CELL PLUS. The F-CELL runs on a fuel-cell drive that is already used in a low-volume production version of the BClass. A chemical reaction between hydrogen and oxygen enables the drive system to generate electrical energy without using fossil fuels. The second drive concept (E-CELL) operates with an innovative 120 V lithium-ion battery. The third BlueZERO unit is called E-CELL PLUS. In this case, a 1.0 litre turbo petrol engine in the rear of the vehicle is installed to drive the power generator. The three-cylinder engine re-charges the lithium-ion battery when required. On this basis, the vehicle can cover up to 600 km on a single tank of fuel and 100 km without a petrol engine. A further advantage of these drive systems is the fact that maximum torque is available as soon as the vehicle moves off, which ensures excellent acceleration.

Recultivating a cult English race track The historical Brooklands race track, the first circuit in the world to be purpose-built for motorsport, is a prime example of renaturation. It was opened in 1907 and closed in 1939. After years of neglect, the 63 hectare site was acquired in 2004 as the new location for Mercedes-Benz World. Measures implemented here included:

y y y

Habitat conservation for rare insects and reptiles Clean-up including safe removal of rubble, weeds, old tyres plus toxic waste and other waste Flood prevention measures for the buildings and land

y y

Recultivation of the terrain, part conversion into a public park and foundation of the 24-hectare park (with childrens playground, skate park, basketball and football playing fields, forest hiking routes) for the community Restoring the historical Brooklands race track

An environmentally responsible approach to processing end-of-life vehicles Recycling end-of-life vehicles makes another key contribution to environmental protection. Disused vehicles offer valuable raw materials and help to conserve natural resources. Around 75% of a Mercedes-Benz, for example, is made of steel that can be 100% recycled. In order to be able to use secondary materials efficiently, Mercedes-Benz developed its own recycling management system (MeRSy). MeRSy has systematically recorded old parts manufactured since 1993, including airbags, shock absorbers, starter batteries, tyres and even service fluids. If you are interested in disused vehicle take-back, more information is available at www.mercedes-benz.de/altfahrzeugverwertung. Here you can find out more about acceptance conditions and your local take-back depots. In order to make the recycling process more efficient in the future, new Mercedes models are designed to be suitable for end-of-life processing. The raw materials used in the vehicles are easier to recycle and the proportion of materials than cannot be reprocessed is minimised.

alling on nature From nature for nature: Mercedes-Benz has for many years focused on the use of natural materials. The key advantage of natural raw materials lies in its high environmental compatibility from production right through to disposal. New materials inside and out The seat covers of the new C-Class Saloon include 15% pure sheep's wool, for example. The result is better moisture absorption and an improved seat climate. Other natural materials in the interior include flax, hemp, sisal and coconut fibre. Mercedes-Benz is also the first automotive manufacturer to use renewable raw materials both for the exterior and interior. Fibres obtained from the abaca banana plant, for example, partially replace the conventional glass fibre structure of the spare-wheel well in the Mercedes-Benz A-Class Coup. A positive side effect: this requires 60% less energy compared with the manufacturing process for conventional glass fibre structures. Fuels of the future: naturally clean Fuel is another exciting area of implementation for natural raw materials. A high-grade biodiesel with an outstanding CO2 balance can be produced from the oil-containing seeds of the jatropha plant, for example. The plant does not require fertiliser or pesticides and grows on poor soil where food cultivation is not feasible. It also prevents ground erosion and can be an important additional source of income for many countries. Another biological fuel is SunDiesel. SunDiesel is produced from plant residues, is almost completely CO2neutral and boasts considerably improved ignition characteristics than conventional diesel fuel. Sun Diesel also contains no sulphur or aromatic compounds and significantly reduces pollutant emissions. And the plant residues used for the production of SunDiesel do not conflict with the production of foodstuffs. Natural gas is one of the best known alternative fuels. Its principal constituent is methane (CH4) and it has the lowest carbon content (which is converted to CO2 during combustion) of all fossil fuels. Emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx), soot and reactive hydrocarbons are also lower. One kilogram of natural gas has an energy content equivalent to that of 1.5 litres of petrol. The designation CNG stands for compressed natural gas (natural gas stored in pressure tanks). Gas-to-liquid (GTL) fuels provide a natural gas option. Natural gas is processed to a particularly high-grade, lowemission diesel fuel. The GTL fuel does not contain sulphur or aromatic hyrdocarbons and is one of the cleanest and highest quality fuels for diesel engines. GTL is not CO2-neutral, though compliance with exhaust regulations can be maintained with the low-emission diesel.

The availability of hydrogen is a crucial part of emission-free mobility using fuel-cell vehicles. In a chemical reaction with oxygen in a fuel cell, hydrogen is converted directly into electrical energy, which is used to drive an electric motor. Mercedes-Benz presented its first research vehicle with fuel-cell drive as early as 1994. Today more than 100 Mercedes-Benz passenger cars, buses and vans with fuel-cell drive are in everyday operation and have covered more than four million kilometres.

Outstanding Mercedes-Benz Environmental Models

Daimlers commitment to environmental protection has been recognized with the environmental certificate according to ISO Standard 14062. The environmental certificate, issued by TV Sd, a German testing agency specializing in technology and environmental protection, is based on an extensive lifecycle assessment in which every environment-related detail is recorded and documented. The environmental certification procedure involves critical examination of over 40,000 individual processes, which are analyzed, calculated and assessed to yield an extensive eco-profile. The assessment does not focus solely on the effects during the utilization phase. All environment-related processes are tested, from development through production and utilization to recycling. This overall profile forms the basis for the environmental certificate. Mercedes-Benz is the only automotive brand in the world to hold environmental certificates in accordance with the ISO standard. The aim is to make environmental protection objectively measurable and turn it into a tangible reality for drivers. In addition to the E-Class and S-Class, the TV Sd environmental certificate has already been issued for the models of the A-, B- and C-Class and the S-Class predecessor model, which was the first car in the world to achieve the standard in 2005. The prestigious certificate was also awarded to the first Mercedes-Benz SUV, the GLK. The Mercedes-Benz website provides environmental certificates for each mentioned model as PDF files.

The program also aims to make expert technical knowledge available to many members of the public. Biodiesel: Mercedes-Benz has been using the jatropha plant for the production of biodiesel. This fuel, which can be used in any diesel vehicle, can achieve the same engine performance as normal diesel fuel, but with much less of an environmental impact. Background: Reducing CO2 emissions, replacing expensive oil imports, and creating possibilities for making a living in areas where the poor quality of the soil makes normal agriculture impossible. India is facing a series of major challenges: high unemployment, especially in rural areas, dependence on fossil fuels, increasing CO2 emissions, and large areas of fallow land or eroded soil. Through the "Biofuels raised on eroded soil" project, Mercedes-Benz in India is offering an approach to solving all of these problems. During the first phase of the project, it was demonstrated that the production of biodiesel from the jatropha plant is technically feasible. In the next phase, which is currently running, the economic efficiency of the process is being improved. Medicine: In Mumbai, 250 children who are suffering from cleft palate can now be helped. Daimler has made a donation of 50,000 to the German Cleft Children's Aid Society that will pay for the necessary operations for 250 children in Mumbai. Objective: The program offers these children the opportunity to live a normal life, which would not be possible in their disfigured state. The target group is socially disadvantaged families that cannot themselves pay the costs of medical treatment for their children.
