Have you ever wondered what its like riding on the back of a garbage truck? My first thoughts would be never! The fowl odor that emits from this trash wagon, so fowl it frightens the nostrils. Many finds is detrimental getting struck in traffic behind one, certainly they were not meant to disturb the public on route to the final destination in dump land, a flies heaven. What could be the cause of these mishaps? Could it be because of the poor design or simply due to waste management gone wrong? What is waste management? Waste management is the collection, transport, processing, recycling or disposal and monitoring of waste materials. The term usually relates to material produced by human activity, and is generally undertaken to reduce their effect on health and the environment. Waste management can involve solid, liquid gaseous or radioactive substances.

In western Jamaica the waste management systems fails yet again to keep up with the proper standards and protocols to ensure that there is a safe and healthy environment. Firstly the system needs to install the right collection and transport methods, practice proper disposal technique and see to it that there are procedures in place to protect their customers and their workers from harmful diseases.

Western Jamaica is growing rapidly with the change in its infrastructures and developments to rural areas; with this the collection and transport system cannot handle the amount of waste generated by these new developments, because they do not have the right collect and transports method install, waste is disposed of in uncontrolled dumps or openly burned. This type of unmonitored and uncontrolled waste has negative consequence on human health and the

environment. In order to correct this problem, the waste management of Jamaica has to develop new operational procedures and review the existing collection systems for the different kinds of waste for example bulk waste which are referred to as waste too large to be accepted by the regular waste collection these include couches, recliners and tables etc, and yet these waste are collected the same way as special waste and communal waste which are waste of less volume. The major problem affect western Jamaica is that there is only one site which caters for 4 parishes namely: Westmoreland, Hanover, St James and Trelawny this brings up the cost factors because of the journey and high gas prices. From information gather from research garbage collector are not intact with there schedules because of the number of communities they have to accommodate thought out the western region, this causes buildup of waste in urban areas. The development of a new sites near each parish is will reduce the time taken to collect the garbage and thus reduce the buildup cause from low collection. Improvements to waste collection and transport can create jobs, decrease open dumping and burning, increase appeal for tourism, and significantly improve public health. Frumkin, Howard. Waste management system needs to practice proper waste disposal techniques such as: landfilling recycling, composting and incineration these practices have their disadvantage but if they are practices properly it will be

very effective in the long run. As of 1993 it is estimated that 71 percent is land filled, 16 percent incinerated, and 13 percent recycled. Other wastes that have to be disposed of are nuclear and hazardous wastes. Petts. J. Eduljee, G.
