introduction
The Atlas of Giving is the definitive measurement of charitable giving in the United States. It is a precise mathematical formula (algorithm) that relies on specific, defined economic and demographic input factors. The formula accurately matches published giving data for the last 42 years. It's coefficient of correlation to past published data is 99.5%. Because the factors included in the algorithm are documented and reported monthly, the Atlas of Giving is able to use that data to measure charitable giving monthly and does not need to rely on surveys or delayed segment reporting data. The algorithm accurately accounts for changing economic conditions, demographic trends, natural disasters and significant national and world events.

Charitable giving for the first half of 2011 has been awesome. Through June, $174.06 billion has been given up 9.2% over 2010. The forecast for the second half calls for a slowing rate of the growth of giving ending in a flat December as compared with 2010. The current forecast indicates that 2011 will finish 7.7% better for charitable gifts than 2010.

The long term forecast for 2012 is dismal. The current forecast projects a significant decline in giving for the first half of 2012. The forecast suggests that fundraising activities will enjoy better results the earlier they occur in 2011. Based on the current forecast, a fundraising event or mailing held in September will raise more than 8% more than one held in December. The good fortune is not equally spread across all charities. Organizations and churches that rely on large volumes of small gifts from individual donors are not doing as well as those that emphasize major gifts from individuals, bequests, corporate giving and foundation grants.

the economy
The economy is the greatest contributing factor to U.S. charitable giving. A growing economy is good for giving. The U.S. is economy is growing but very slowly. The mixed result of economic factors in June had a mixed effect on charitable giving. Organizations that derive most of their giving from donors that rely on asset values and wealth are doing well. Organizations and churches that rely on individual donors who give from their income are not doing as well. Consumer Confidence declined again in June down 5.5%. This is bad news for charities and churches that rely on small gifts from donors who give out of their income or cash flow. Individuals that dont feel confident in spending money on consumer goods also dont feel good about making donations. Unemployment rose again in June to 9.2%. Unemployment has a very significant impact on charitable giving that is long lasting especially for organizations that rely on small gifts that individuals make from their income. Housing starts made a comeback in June up 14.6%, the highest gain in 6 months. Any good news in housing would seem welcomed. However, there is evidence that a robust housing market is not necessarily good for giving. The more that families spend on housing costs (mortgage, insurance, furnishing, maintenance, etc.), the less they have to give to charities and churches. The stock market slipped for the first time in many months in June down 1.1%. The stock market is very important in the charitable giving economy. Asset givers, major donors, corporation gifts, grant making foundations and bequest gifts all ebb and flow based on stock values. The value of the U.S. $ is weakening against foreign currencies. This would seem like it should be bad news. However, the current effect of a weak dollar is that U.S. exports are increasing as other countries take advantage of the situation to buy U.S. goods. Good news for U.S. companies. And, good news for charities that benefit from corporate giving.

other factors
Federal deficit/Debt Ceiling/Default discussion. Its too early to know what impact if any all of this will have on the world and U.S. economy and charitable giving. The views of pundits range from cataclysmic to no big deal. The bottom line is that if default is allowed to occur and the world markets and economies respond negatively it would be very bad for charitable giving stay tuned. Political campaign fundraising is putting increasing pressure on the charitable giving economy. Individuals and companies are diverting funds from normal charitable giving into political campaigns. Rumors of China bubble burst. There is increasing speculation that the huge gains made in recent years in the Chinese economy are due for a correction. The direct impact of a major correction on U.S. charitable giving is unclear. The short term impact would not be good. However, the long term impact might actually be favorable for the U.S. economy.

model calculations
Mathematical analysis of over 50 variables and 40 years of comprehensive giving data was used to create the ATLAS of Giving model. Calculations correlate to overall giving in the U.S. at a rate of 99.5%. The margin of error for the model is +/- 4% in the current month. Margins of error for projections increase with time as illustrated below.
